Just curious, I bought a kong for my Maximus and is it healthy for him to eat Peanut Butter, How often is too much. And I heard that a raw egg is good for a dogs coat but I'm not sure. I tried to do some research on the web but no luck. Thnks, Finally some sunshine and 60 degrees in Philly!!!! Max loves the outside.:D
My golden Daisy, loves a kong filled with peanut butter! I give one to her once every week, as for raw egg, i dont give her that. I could make them sick.

I put peanut butter in my dogs' kongs, and they love it--I have no idea how much is too much though.
I have heard of the raw egg thing, but I don't give it to my dogs--Kito (my Shiba), used to eat mackerel every 2 weeks to shine up his coat, but I couldn't handle the smell anymore:o
I had thought about the eggs, but I thought I might just scramble them up and give them to the dogs--at least they're cooked that way--but I don't know if they loose any nutrients after being cooked.
I have given Timber a bit of peanut butter, and God knows how much Leather's gotten after all of her kitchen raids :p
I'm not sure about the raw eggs though. A friend of mine gives his husky raw eggs every morning to keep her fur shiny, but I do know for a fact that dogs can get samonella, and everyone should assume that all eggs carry it, for safety measure. I'm not sure how susceptible they are to it compared to humans, but maybe you should cook the egg just incase? :)
I've wondered the same thing about PB....I put some in Nebo's kong occasionally, but not too much.
And I don't know about the raw eggs, but I wouldn't give them to my dog.
Some people give their dogs raw eggs as part of the BARF diet. I've given kai raw chicken, beef, turkey, etc...nothing wrong so far. But i suppose there's always a chance...
You have to be careful with those :) Not too many. Dogs don't have the right digestive enzymes need to digest raw meat, so it can upset their stomach ;)Quote:

I've done quite a lot of research on the BARF diet, and have started to incorporate some of it into Malone's diet. Yes, one of the recommended things is a raw egg (in the shell and everything). Wolfsoul, I'm just curious to know what you think dogs and canines eat in the wild. Did you think that someone cooked all their meals before they ate them or did you think they were vegetarians??? ;)

Drake likes PB and gets if every once in a while. I too have incorporated the BARF diet with the help of our vet. Drake gets a raw egg with his food every other day.
Kia LOVES peanut butter and if she's been a good girl, I stuff her Kong full.
I also give her a raw egg every once in awhile. I hear it helps shine up their coat. She's never been sick from it.
When dogs were in the wild they ate raw meat, yes, but when humans took them in, fed them only table scraps and such, they took away the digestive enzymes that some other animals have, like the wolf. They also made an animal that was completely dependant on humans. ;)Quote:

It clearly states that there are no benefits of raw meat and that it actually makes them sick. Can give them pancreatis, brain and kidney illnesses, etc.

I give Foxy a raw egg about once or twicw a week. It really makes his coat smooth and shiny and it is good for him at the same time.

Actually, the thought of feeding my dog anything raw completely gags me, lol. I won't even *touch* raw meat.
My dogs eat raw meat & eggs sometimes & never had a problem. What do you think they ate in the wild? Why do so many dogs do good on the barf diet?
Anyways, more ideas for kong toys!
I fill mine w/ almost anything & everything. I try to combine the items so they taste well together, like yougurt & fruits, leftover meats & potatoes, peanut butter & jelly or friuts, kibbel mixed w/ rice etc! The list is endless! They can also be frozen for a nice summertime treat! :p

I wouldn't feed my dog any raw meat, ecspecially because samonella and the other harsh diseases that can get from it...:eek:
Dogs have been domesticated and not wild for a LONG time.....it's not dogs that ate raw meat in the wild, its wolves, coyotes, etc.Quote:

I bought that new Kong Stuff'n and Nebo LOVES that stuff....I also like to freeze water in it in the summer. :)
wolf_q is right. They didn't come from the wild just yesterday. They say that dogs diverged from wolves 14000 years ago, but recent evidence has proved that they came 135000 years ago! :eek:
Sorry if I caused an uproar. I know dogs have been domesticated for a long time but there are still alot of wild dogs out there, not just coyotes & wolves. Even in the old days there were wild dogs. And when dogs were first domesticated people fed them raw meat along with cooked table scraps. Even us people eat a lot of things we shouldn't! So my dogs deserve a treat once in a while. I feed my dogs nutro but do feed raw meats too. I get all farm fresh meat with no addatives in the meat or animal for myself & my dogs which helps leson a lot of complications & illnesses. Like I have said in other posts many times each dogs system is different, my dogs have never had a problem with it, I am not saying that raw food is right for every one its just that personally I see no problem with it if that is what you choose to feed. Why does the barf diet work so darn well w/ a lot of dogs?

That's true, but only raw meat and/or eggs can cause samonella, and that's one of the main reasons I'm against raw feed, particularly because an infected dog does not always go noticed. Sometimes the dog does not show any illnesses when it carries samonella, but once the dog contributes the disease to the humans around it, then it gets bad. There can be law suits, and it's a terrible thing to have to lose your dog and your money.Quote:

Just going to throw my 2 cents worth in here ............ about the eggs.
I read on a "doggie" site that dogs cannot digest the white part of a raw egg ........ so I give mine the yolk mixed with their food, and make meringue with the white :D

samonella is EVERYWHERE, their is NO such thing as a salmonella free anything. my dogs are on a totally raw diet and it saved their lives. happy almost died from a non-raw diet(tryed several types of, including homecooked), shadow was so sick that we almost put her down to get her out of her misery. that was 2 years ago, happy now has a an amazing immune system, shadow no longer has ANY of the ailments she preveisly had, she acts like a puppy again. Ripley went from dull coat and being very pugy and lazy to a glossy coat, very muscular, and fast and agile. perky is just plain out healthier, and misty went from a dull flaky coat, and being stinkie when we got her, and now she has a glossy coat and does not smell at all. anybody who says that raw meat is no good, and has no benifet has never seen a dog fed a proper raw diet, either that or they are extremly close minded :rolleyes:Quote:

You can't call me close-minded, because this is my opinion! I never said that I was a genius, just that I believe the scientists that do this particular research. How can you say that there's no such thing as a samonella free anything? Samanella is not in fruit, veggies, bread, cereal, blah blah balh, I could name billions of foods that don't caryy that disease. If there was no such thing as samonella free anything, don't you think we'd all be infected?! :rolleyes:
Samanella ONLY comes from partially cooked or uncooked animal products, not including milk. Yes, it can be found in dog foods that hadn't had the meat in it cooked properly. I've heard alot of strife over the product "Farmore" for selling products that carry samonella.
I'm glad that your dogs like it, but like I said, it's only my opinion that there is too much worry over it and it's not something I would feed my dogs. I've taken into consideration what people are saying, and it's changed my point of view. So obviously if you can't bear to stop stating your opinions as facts, and making generalized comments, than you are the close-minded one, not I or the scientists who take thier time and devotion into researching this for us. Obviously this diet is only for some dogs.
I know dogs who have lived past fifteen, some up to eighteen, on the raw diet. But I've known more dogs who have died or gotten ill from it.

un-biased scientific studys on raw or kibble diets, they are sponsered by pet food companies, so obviously the info on raw diets and kibble diets will be skewed. and salmonella is everywhere, I got that info from several soarces that I would post if we had not gotten a friggen virus. and I also got that info confirmed by a nurtionist. I dont think everyone should feed raw, or that it is best for every dog. I know some very healthy dogs on kibble diets, and homecooked diets. but it is way better for my dogs. I get angry sometimes because I am sick of hearing all the same reasons from people from people against raw. and I know for a fact that they are all friggen lies, it just makes me really made cuz some people think I am awful for feeding raw, and how could I put my dogs at risk? a dog getting samonella from raw meat is very rare, and only happens to dogs who's owners dont feed raw diet properly. you are getting more info on it, and your opinion is changing you are definatly not close minded. I am not close minded, I just see so many lies about it, it makes me so mad :mad:

Sorry Cali, it's just that you said that anybody who says that raw meat is no good, and has no benifet has never seen a dog fed a proper raw diet, either that or they are extremly close minded...and I have seen a dog fed a proper raw diet who died :( It's in the other thread. :(
I have heard many facts about sprouts, broccoli & other foods that have been infected w/ samanella. Even right here in my area a few years back. Granted thoses foods are not the producers of samanella but they sure can be the carriers!The samanlla probably came from some kind of meat somewhere but the samanella infected veggies & fruits were available to the public at stores so it can be found anywhere & everywhere. So unless you grow your own fruits & veggies, make your own bread w/ your own grown ingredients etc.. you will never ever be samanella free.Quote:

I realize this, but that does not meant that it's in every single bit of veggie and fruit and whavetever else in the entire world..
Abby gets PB Kongs all the time.
Cisco' kong was stolen by Ringo our bird. He never really cared for it anyway so he doesn't get peanut butter. I have never given him RAW anything! I don't know just the sound of it is yuchy. I mean I don't eat raw found and niether does my boy. My grandpa always gave his hunting dogs(labs) raw eggs and claimed it was good for the coat. I will say that Cisco does get Omega3 oils on his food once in awhile. This helps his skin from being too dry and keeps a nice shine to the coat.
