A true story. Sophomore year of college. I was smart enough to sign up for the same professor for each English course. The Freshman courses were writing and grammar courses required for all. I figured I would benefit and I did, so I elected not to opt out of the classes with a CLEP grade.
Anyway, back to British Lit in the Sophomore year. I'm a good student but Chaucer had me flummoxed. I am a mathematician (and more than likely somewhat autistic) so being "literal" is the norm. I have since taught myself to read between the lines and beyond the story, but that wasn't happening at age 19. I was failing. The professor loaned me her 20th century translation of Chaucer so I could pass the quizzes and tests. I don't know how I made it through Shakespeare, though. I switched to American Lit the next semester.
Funnily enough, I was invited (and did so) to read and comment on Freshman student journals for the English department my senior year. There were English majors who were denied that privilege.
