Three legged Dixie
Dixie can only walk on three legs. :( She was limping yesterday so I called the vet and took her in for an xray. There was significant swelling and I thought it might of been broken. Turns out it is just one very nasty sprain. She should be better in about a week or two per the vet. In the mean time she will be hobbling around.
Dusty is having a hard time getting use to this too since he lost his wrestling partner. He will have to find another way to amuse himself! That could mean trouble.
-
Poor Dixie :( :( I hope she feels better soon .. Guess, Dusty needs to just hang around 'til his 'wrestling partner' gets better ... Glad to hear from you again Candy ;) We miss you a lot :)
GIve my {HUG} and slobbery kisses from Missy to Dixie and Dusty!! :)

I just came home and found Dixie's paw twice the size it was this morning when I left for work. I called the vet again and they want to see her back at 5:45 Eastern time. I think there must be something embedded in her foot and it looks like now it may be infected. I have used a magnifying glass and can't see anything. Please say a pray that the vet can see what is going on this time. It breaks my heart to have her hurting. Thanks. ;)
-
Is it possibly broken??
Candy ~
If the Vet can't find a wound or penetration anywhere on the paw ~ Suggest considering a broken part...
Shadow ( :( RB) *BROKE* her rear, outside TOE one night - stubbed it on something. She hobbled around and whined like she'd damaged her back or hip. Vet looked and prodded all the major structures and said "I bet she injured just that paw; my guess is a broken toe. Let's take a picture."
Sure enough - One Well Broken Toe.
Wrapped her paw and ankle joint and off she hobbled... for about two or three weeks.
She played the injury to the hilt - until the tiny sized (at the time) Boots Kat started to take advantage of the situation.
Boots was thoroughly enjoying pestering Shadow ~
Until Shadow had had enough one night - Boots had almost forgotten how fast he needed to run to stay out in front .
Hope the Vet Visit gets to the bottom of the problem!
-
I really hope they can figure out what's wrong!! We'll be thinking about you!!! Poor Dixie...I think she deserves an extra cookie.

I'm so sorry Dixie is not getting better, Dixie, you can bet there will be plenty of prayers, fingers, toes and paws crossed that the Vet finds what the problem is and will be able to cure her pronto.
In the meantime please give Dixie some hugs and kisses from this gang and to Dusty too for being so patient waiting for his wrestling partner.

The vet verified no broken bones. She has a major infection in her right front inside toe but it doesn't look like anything is lodged in it. There is a puss bubble that finally appeared and the vet was able to burst it. There was immediate relief but the inflamation is significant. She is running a slight fever so she is also on antibiotics.
The worst part of the ordeal for Dixie now is the Elizabethan Collar she has to wear so she won't lick the infected area. I will keep everyone updated. Thanks for prayers.
-
Remember, Dixie-girl, that Elizabeth was a queen with red-gold hair, so wearing that collar means people should treat you like royalty!
(Hope your paw heals up quick! No fun for anybody when you guys can't wrassle!)
-
Oh Candy I'm sorry to hear about Dixie. I'm sure she'll get better what with you looking after her and all, and having Dusty bugging her to get better might help. You'll be in my thoughts and prayers.
-
poor Dixie, I hope she feels better soon! Poor Dusty!! If Keegan lived closer I would ship her to you!!! They would have a BALL!
-
Oh I'm sorry to hear about Dixie!! That sound so painful! I wonder what could have caused it! There has to be *some* reason her paw was suddenly infected! Maybe she has something very tiny stuck in her paw? Reggie, Smokey, and Nebo send get-well wishes to Dixie.....and Nebo says he HATED the elizabethan collar too....and hopes Dixie doesn't have to wear it for *too* long!
-
Oh poor Dixie girl :( I am so sorry that she is feeling bad, but hope those antibiotics knock it out of her quick. Graham was swimming last summer and there must have been a chunk of wood with a nail sticking out of it, because he cried and came back to shore, where the bottom of his GOOD FOOT had a nail sized hole in it, and he was in pain and it was bleeding.
I went home and immediately flushed it out, clipped the hair well around it, and soaked it, but it was not enough. His foot and leg got so swollen and he ended up having a puss pocket, also. They prescribed antibiotics and foot soaks in novalsen several times per day. He eventually got better, but it was frustrating for him.
I do hope that the lovely Dixie recovers as quickly as possible, and she is feeling better from her pain :(
It's great to hear from you again, Candy. I miss you! Hugs to Dixie and to Dusty.
-
I'm glad to hear there were no broken bones, I bet that was a relief! But sorry to hear she has to wear that big ol' collar:( Poor Girl! Hope your foot gets back to normal in no time flat!!!
Take care & give her big {{{Hugs}}} from all of us here!
Anna, Angus, Roxey & Huney

Aww...:( Poor sweet girl! I wish I could kiss your boo-boo and make it better! I'll bet you look beautiful in anything you wear! Listen to mom and take your meds and you'll be better in no time! Cody and I love you guys.{hugs} to Candy!
-
Oh, baby Dixie girl!!:( That sounds like quite a boo boo!!:( Gratefully, nothing broken!! But I'm sure you're not liking being a cone head!;) Mind your Mommy now, take your medicine and try not to lick!! You've been such a brave girl! We're all looking forward to you returning to perfect health very soon! Love and hugs to you Dixie from Sandra, Cody and Star!!
-
Dixie, I'm wondering how Dixie is doing? How is her foot? Is it healing and getting better? All these questions, lol She gets lots of hugs from all of us and of course sweet Dusty too.

Update on Dixie's foot
The antibiotics are kicking in and the swelling has gone down some. Now we can see where something actually punctured her skin between the first and second inside toes of her right foot. Still don't know what but the mystery over what is wrong is finally answered.
She still is not applying any weight to the foot and absolutely hates being a cone head. She looks at me with those sad brown eyes and it's all I can do not to throw that thing in the garbage. I know it's for her best interest though so she has to wear it all the time except when she eats and goes out to potty. She won't do either of these things with it on. I guess she feels it is not dignified! LOL
We are taking Dusty to the dog park after work to play with a couple of his littermates. That should help wear him out a little tonight and tomorrow he has a play date with 4 other Goldens from the Pittsburgh Golden Retriever Club so I'm sure he will have fun tomorrow too! He has so much energy. I didn't realize how much until his momma got hurt. She must always be playing with him while I am at work when she's healthy! ;)
Thanks again for your support and prayers! I miss posting as much as I did.
-
Dixie, it sounds like she is doing better, I know what you mean about that megaphone thing on her, Daisy hated that and would bump into everything with it, she did put the thing over her food bowl and eat, but was not a happy camper. LOL I hope by now Dixie is all better and walking on that paw.

I sent this email to the prayer pawtrol yesterday.
Dixie's paw swelled really bad a little over a week ago and the vet was unsure what is going on to cause all the swelling. They have done x-rays and checked for punctures but there does not seem to be any explanation for the swelling. She is in pain because she has been whimpering when you touch it. She is very strong and didn't even whimper in child birth so I know it has to be really hurting her.
The swelling went down for a couple days and we thought the antibiotics had kicked in and whatever was going on was gone. Unfortunately yesterday the swelling came back and she is in even more pain that before. Another trip to the vet and we still don't know what is going on. She is now on two different kinds of antibiotics The vet said that if the swelling doesn't go down and stay down they may end up having to amputate her toe. It seems kind of extreme and I will take her to Ohio State Veterinary Hospital before doing that. Ohio State is like Tuft's on the east coast.
Please keep her in your prayers.
Candy

Poor Dixie :( I am so sorry to hear she is hurting so much and the swelling has come back.
I am sure that the vet has already thought of this but what came in my mind is that a grass seed had got in there, especially as it begins between the toes. From what I have read, and seen once on tv, they can go really deep and sometimes can be very difficult to detect but it does show very similar effects to Dixie`s.
I hope the two antibiotics do the trick and she begins to get better very soon.
Keeping her in my prayers.
Hugs from Chris and doggy kisses from Bob

We're all praying for ya Dixie, don't want that toe to be amputated:eek:
Get better fast girl!!!
-
This breaks my heart.... :( We'll be praying for Dixie... I was hoping she was already ok, based on the previous e-mail.... I'm so sorry to hear that she's in pain again.... I know that our furkids have a high tolerance of pain... They don't complain even when they are hurting.... But if they moan, or they cry, they must really be in extreme pain :( :(
We'll be thinking and praying for Dixie, and also for you Candy... We know how difficult is this for you, to see her in pain....
God bless...

I have made an appointment to have Dixie's toe examined for cancer. I posed a question out on a medical dog website and a couple hits came back for the exact same symptoms and it turned out to be cancer related. If the diagnosis is made before the cancer has a chance to mastasize it is usually 100% curable. If the diagnosis is delayed then the prognosis is not so fortunate. I don't want to wait any longer so the appointment is made. I will let everyone know what the outcome is. The appointment is not until this Friday.
-
Candy I know how anxious you are feeling about Friday. We are all hoping that Dixie's problem is something much less serious and will be waiting to see what you find out. As I mentioned to you in an e-mail, my Whitney had cancer of the toe and it was amputated. It didn't hinder her one bit in her activities and after a while we stopped noticing how funny her sweet little foot looked. You are wise to check everything out right away. Hugs to you and Dixie while you wait.

We'll be praying for our precious Dixie...:( :(
-
Poor Dixie, I hope she will be ok.
We will all be praying for her.
