I used to have my heart set for owning big dogs, and only big dogs, until I adopted my 18 pound pug. Oh my gosh is she cute! I can hardly stand it! I am so much more open minded now about little dogs http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif I just took her to a pet supplies store near me and bought her a little sweater http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif You can't have a little dog without buying a sweater when winter comes http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif And there's nothing better then putting her in the kitchen sink when she needs a bath, no back strain and oh, how easy! I still adore big dogs but my mind has opened to little dogs http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif
Well I might as well put in my two cents worth. I have had only poodles but I have had them in all 3 sizes......toys (8-10 lbs), miniature (25 lbs) and a standard (45 lbs). As far as their personalities go, it made no difference. They were all sweet, loving and very intelligent. The only one that I couldn't hold in my lap was my standard. It was a shame too because she would try to sit in my lap but she just didn't fit!! I used to tell her that she was a toy in a standard's body!! I think I like small dogs the best for that reason. I love to cuddle them in my lap. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif
Most definitely small dogs! There are so many more benefits to small dogs over big dogs including but not exclusive to:
* Small dogs generally live longer.
* Small dogs cost less to feed.
* Small dogs cost less at the Vet.
* Small dogs are easier to transport.
* Small dogs fit in your lap.
* Small dogs leave less to clean up after.
* Small dogs often have big dog
personalities (lots 'o' fun!)
* Small dogs are often welcome in places
where big dogs would be a hazard.
* Small dogs are generally easier to manage.
* Small dogs mature much faster.
Enough good reasons? I'm sure there are more that I haven't thought of. Any help out there?
For Sophie's Daddy.....I only have one more thought since you covered it so well.
They don't knock you over if they happen to jump up on you! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif
I like big dogs because:
There's a lot more to love.
Strangers and burglers respect them more.
I don't have to bend down to pet them.
Kids can't easily hurt them.
They keep my feet warm at night.
They can go for longer walks.
They can defend themselves.
The hawks and coyotes in my neighborhood don't bother them.
I don't need a garbage disposal.
They have big hearts.

Big dogs! For all the reasons Su said.
Su, you are so right! Big dogs rule!!!!!!!
I know you're trying to be humorous but a well trained dog doesn't jump up on you.Quote:

You are correct there Rottie! My dogs went through obedience classes and were trained to not jump on people but when I visit other people's houses that is often a different story. One training tip that we learned to teach the "no jumping" behavior is to bend your knee as the dog is coming toward you. Soon they will get the point that a bent knee doesn't allow them to bounce off you quite the way they wanted to! Anyway, it works. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gifQuote:

So Far small dogs and BIG DOGS is tied with 6!!!and one undecided
Normal size, proper dog size, O.K. if pushed bigger dogs work for me.
Don't get me wrong I have met countless small dogs with lovely personalities and even some with really nice owners too! But I'm afraid there is still just too many people out there that refuse to believe that their over indulged hairballs are or ever could be dogs! Harsh, I know, but it gets me mad!! Sorry to all you lovely people who have trained and fed your small canines with care and dedication, I know you do exist.
Carries right there are sick people but there are some really good people too.Like this one lady she talks to her dog all the time. She has never been away from it for even a day.The funny thing is before she got her dog she loved small dogs but her dog now is a St.Bernard! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif
As much as I love the pug, I like a dog to be able to keep up when I jog, or a dog that will be able to defend itself if confronted with a not-so-nice dog. I adore my pug, don't get me wrong, but I have to take her and my other dog for slower, shorter walk because she's not the most energetic thing, then I take her home and do another walk (faster and longer) with my aussie. I love to dress her up in her sweater and hold her little body in my arms but she is more like a toy then she is a dog. It really is just a matter of opinion, I adore her and I enjoy her wonderful little sense of humor, but I REALLY like to be able to take long, swift walks and jogs and I like camping and hiking and I like my dog to join me. I would never take her jogging, she'd kill herself trying to keep up and I would never take her camping, she's like a Krispy Kreme to preditors. She's more of a doll, or a toy then a dog. I love to have my athletic aussie for walks by my side, and I love to come home to my happy little clown toy. I may even get another pug in the far future when my pug is gone but I will always have a big dog to stand by my side.
Hi again,
I agree that most pugs have lovely personalities but, apart from the way some of them are treated, the main thing I have aganst them is that they are pugs! Even if they do not have a medical condition that is treated by a vet a very large proportion of these dogs suffer during their lives. The very idea that an animal descended from the wolf hasn't got the breathing capability or the legs to jog with it's owner is, well, I will be thrown off this site if I say what I really think!!!!!!!
Definitely big dogs. I agree small dogs are more like toys than actual...well, you know, *dogs*!! When I think of a dog, a big one always comes to mind...they are sweet, brilliant, fun, and just overall companions...you can take them for walks, take them camping, and when you hug them...well, it's just heaven :=) !! You can't truly hug a small dog (I know this cause my roomate has 2 chihuahuas). You can cuddle them, but you can't truly hug them...big dogs rule :=) !!!
P.S. I respect anyone who thinks differently, but...I especially *can't* stand Daschunds. To me they are *the* most annoying creatures...Shih-Tzus and Yorkies are adorable little furballs, though :=)
SummerSkkye, I used to have a whole list of breeds that I couldn't understand why anyone would want, until I started visiting Dog of the Day and getting to know an individual dog of those breeds as described by their person. Now the Dachshund, Basset Hound, Greyhound, Bulldog, Great Dane, Chihuahua, have all had to be scratched from my "list". Go back through the archives of Dog of the Day and I bet you will find a completely irresistible Dachshund. Cocker Spaniels never appealed to me and now I OWN one and am COMPLETELY smitten. Be careful what you don't like, that particular little critter may steal your heart one day.

We have both small and large dogs.
I feel much safer with my large dogs
around, but small dogs are much
easier to travel with because of their
size.
You can carry them into stores and they
do not take up much room.
I think what ever size Dog you have,
they are full of love and companionship.

I haven't been on in a while but I go for big dogs.
My friend has a Jack Russel, but I love my bubbas to death
The smallest dog I have is about 50lds. & I don't think I'd have a smaller dog than her.
I have to agree with Su.

Not all little dogs are cream puffs.
I use to have a alpha 13 lb. Terrier (terror)
that bossed my Akita around. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif
OK. I love big dogs, but that Bacon, Today's Dog of the Day, has to be the cutest thing!! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif
O.K., I could have a "pocket pup" like Bacon as long as I have my "real" dogs!! (2 GSDs) http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif
Su, Killian and Shiloh
Everyone has their favorites and preferences, but KYS is right. Can't you agree with that? http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gifQuote:

Personally, I wish I could have several of each, but let's not forget the "mejiums". They are just the right size to sleep in your bed without being crushed when you flip over and although they may not be able to overpower an intruder, they can give him a really hard time. They can outlast me on a run and still sit on my lap. Here's to the 25 - 30 pounders who live with me.
You go, Rachel!!! How could we forget the medium sized dogs? I had a perfectly wonderful 35 pound Cocker Spaniel for over 5 years and she was the BEST dog I have ever owned. We adopted Kaycee when I she was 7 years old and kept her and loved her until we had to make the decision to euthanize her at age 12, due to conjestive heart failure. I think we love whatever we have!!!! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif
http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/cool.gif I also agree with Rachael I wish I could have several of each then I could run with one and cuddle with one http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/tongue.gif http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/eek.gif http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/wink.gif

Big Dogs- are good for walking, running, playing, grooming(if you like that sort if thing),hugging http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/tongue.gif
Small-are good for cuddiling,holding,traveling,small houses http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif
So big dogs have some better traits than small dogs and small dogs have some better traits than big dogs. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/tongue.gif http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

I don't know about your inability to envision small dog abilities, but I have done everything you mentioned above with my small dog except the camping which I will have to try sometime. My little 9lb. dog and I regularly go for a two mile walk that loops back to my condo and she is always ready for more even though she is not high energy indoors. My little dog has all of the personality trait you mentioned as well and moreso than any big dog I have met. The hugging is the best part as you can lift them off the ground to do it!Quote:

Well, I've been around all sizes and how you couldn't hug a small dog is beyond me. I used to thump on my little JRT just like I did my 40# cattle dog mix when I wanted to pet her and she took it very well. If you are tripping over your dog, it's time to teach heeling so the dog will learn to get out of the way. My mother went from Viszlas to Border Terriers because they were "easier to handle now that I'm getting older..." and they are great little dogs, but the Viszlas were fantastic dogs, too. When I had a big bed, I had three dogs and a cat or two sleeping with me and I never squished one. All I can say to you big dog afficianados, don't knock the little guys until you've tried one -- they don't know they're little and we aren't telling them.
Sleeping with dogs is just the BEST. When my two curl up with me every night, I say to myself, Heaven can't be any better than this. A dog trainer once told me I shouldn't let Hannah sleep in the bed because this reinforced her sense of being in charge, but I'm sorry, this is one aspect of living with my dogs that I won't give up. We are so in tune with one another at night.Quote:

I agree, I love them all, no matter what size they are. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif
Of course since I am getting up
thier in years and lack of strength,
I am considering a different/smaller breed next time around.
I used to share my bed with the big dogs, but I got tired of all that dog hair on the bed. So now only our little dog is allowed on the bed.
Just have to love them all whether their pint size or Jumbo. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif
I love having my dog in bed with me at night too. As for the dominance thing, there are certain rules that should be followed if you want to keep a dog in bed with you.
Since wolves, our dog's true identities, are social animals, they often sleep closely in the pack. The alpha is generally the only one who gets to choose where they sleep and the others fall in based on pack hierarchy; the closest dog being beta, etc.. Nonetheless, they are used to sharing a bed (sleeping area) and their inability to do so represents disfavor with the pack. This means that keeping your dog away from you in sleeping arangements may make the dog believe that they are Alpha (they have a choice after all if they have the run of the house) or like an outcast.
In a home with children, however, things get a little strange. If you allow your dog to sleep with you, your dog will feel that it is above your children in the pack order. Some behavior problems can arise from this. In these cases, the dog should sleep with the youngest child old enough to handle the dog.
If this is not the case, however, the only thing to worry about is that the dog does not sleep or lie on your pillows. The closer the dog is to your head, the more power it believes it has in your household. Allowing your dog to share your pillow is tantamount to declaring it Alpha or co-alpha!
I let Sophie sleep in my bed, but she is at least half way down the bed from me. The one time I caught her on my pillow, I gave her a mild verbal reprimand. That was all it took to get her to not do it again, and when I caught her, the look on her face told me that she knew that she was doing something wrong (sort of like trying out the boss's desk and chair and getting caught)!
I prefer big dogs, but it's a good thing that some people prefer little dogs or there would be an awful lot of homeless little ones. But if you go to the shelter there are always more large dogs than small.

Sophies Dad & Pam covered all the benefits of owning a small dog. Tibetan Spaniels bear out all those points...but especially having big dog personalities in a small body. Our Tibetan Spaniel amazes people with how intelligent & well-trained she is...people expect small dogs to be airheads. She was nominated for a canine hero award this year (up there with the big dogs!) for alerting people to a tiny child who'd strayed onto a busy road. She also does pet therapy work & is especially good at working with very ill children because of her size & her intelligent, confident personality. In the East, tibbies were known as the lion dog because of their strong hearts & minds...not because of their size.
Angels3, your dog sound like a true hero. What is her name? I am putting my Pug Bandit in the pet therapy program because he is such a loving sweetheart. I posted a few weeks ago about how a little poodle helped my daughter when she was hospitalized after an accident. I think it is wonderful when someone has their pet participate in such a positive program. Three cheers for you and your girl! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

Genia, our tibetan spaniel's name is Angel. Your pug sounds like a perfect pet therapy dog. The smaller pet therapy dogs are good when a child is very ill or suffering injuries. But big dogs do pet therapy, too.
