PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla.(AP)—Tiger Woods apologized Friday for cheating on his wife and says he is unsure when he will return to competitive golf.

“I was unfaithful. I had affairs. I cheated. What I did was not acceptable,” said Woods, looking composed and speaking in a steady voice. His wife, Elin, was not with him.

As for coming back to the PGA Tour, the planet’s best golfer said: “I do plan to return to golf one day. I just don’t know when that day will be. I don’t rule out it will be this year.”

Woods talked for more than 13 minutes from the clubhouse at the TPC Sawgrass, home of the PGA Tour. About 40 people were in the room, including his mother, with an untold number watching around the world as he made his public confession.

When Woods finished, he hugged his mother and she whispered in his ear.

“I said ‘I’m so proud of you. Never think you stand alone. Mom will always be there for you and I love you,”’ Kultida Woods said.

Admitting he felt he “deserved to enjoy the temptations” that came with his fabulous success, Woods said he is solely responsible for his actions. “I am deeply sorry for my irresponsible and selfish behavior,” Woods said.

Woods said he was in treatment for 45 days and will return for more therapy, adding he has more work to do to resolve his personal problems.

Woods had not talked in public since his traffic accident Nov. 27 triggered shocking revelations about Woods’ serial infidelity.

As for his marriage, he said: “Every one of these questions and answers is a matter between Elin and me, issues between a husband and wife.”

In Sweden, Elin’s father, Thomas Nordegren, said he saw Woods’ confession.

“I watched it but I have nothing to say right now,” Nordegren told The Associated Press.

Elin’s mother, Barbro Holmberg, declined to comment on Woods’ apology, through her spokeswoman Eva Malmborg.

Friday’s event was tightly controlled, with only a few journalists allowed to watch Woods live. The televised confession became a major television event with the networks breaking in to show it.

No other PGA Tour player could command this kind of attention.

Woods is one of the most recognized athletes in the world. Television ratings double when he is in contention, which has happened a lot on his way to winning 71 times on the PGA Tour and 14 majors, four short of the record held by Jack Nicklaus.

And no other athlete had such a spectacular fall. Accenture and AT&T have ended their endorsement contracts with him, and Woods has become the butt of jokes on everything from late shows to Disney performances.

Woods’ statement came during the Match Play Championship, sponsored by Accenture.

Ernie Els was among players who were upset to learn that Woods had chosen the week of a World Golf Championship for a public appearance that was sure to take attention away from the tournament. “It’s selfish,” Els told Golfweek magazine.

Former champion Nick Faldo, whose own personal life has been subject to media scrutiny over the years, watched Woods and told the Golf Channel: “It has left a big question mark: When is he going to return? We have had the apology but as golfers we are back at square one.”

Woods’ appearance drew reaction from all corners.

From the Olympics, American Alpine skier Julia Mancuso posted on Twitter: “do we think this is coming from the heart or the paper! come on Tiger! give us some reality here.”

Veronica Siwik-Daniels, one of Woods’ alleged mistresses and a former pornographic performer, watched the event with attorney in a Los Angeles radio studio.

“I really feel I deserve to look at him in person face to face in the eyes because I did not deserve this,” she said.

Actually, a texted script makes sense to me.

When I did the part of my recovery program that called for me to clear my side of the street and make amends, I used a fill-in-the-blank paragraph.

Reason being - when I actually faced the person to whom I would make amends (Step 9), I needed to have a written reminder of all I was going to say, cause it had to be as thorough as possible.

Grovelling, crying, whatever don't make it genuine - honesty does.

I believe a person doing this is being as honest as they can be at the time. As Woods himself said, he has a long way to go.

Continuing to get help is a living amend. It goes way beyond "sorry".

His future actions will speak.

I would never, ever make my mom sit thru a 'press conference' like that. That was totally reckless and showed that he really doesn't have any respect for his family-The way walked over to her and hugged her afterwards was scripted and so akward that I cringed and wondered what she was thinking.

Had that been me?

My mom would have stopped me before I got there, taken off her shoe and would have beat me, rather lustily, about the head and shoulders-All the while calling me a choice string of names in Spanish, reminding me how stupid, callous I was, then tossed in a few ab punches for embarassing her.

Ma was 4' 11' and could get as mean and crazy as a rabid pit bull.

In my life, I have feared no other woman besides her.

So If TW doesn't fear or respect his mom, then had her sit front row at that debacle? He probably doesn't respect any other woman.:eek:

I didn't watch his public apology but I have seen snippets. It isn't his lack of sincerity that bothers me; I expected that. It's the fact that he announced that he wouldn't take questions. He's manipulated the media all along; he did it when he was golfing and before we learned of his escapades and he's doing it again. I never really gave a whit one way or the other until now. Now he's getting on my nerves w/his conditions. Apologize to your wife and shut up about it then. Why do we need an apology? We can be glad that he isn't an actor b/c that spectacle was pathetic, at least what I saw of it anyhow.

Not that I watched it or really care about it, but I was expecting something like this for awhile. It's the way to smooth over things a bit and get sponsors back, because without sponsors he's done.

What cracks me up is one of his mistresses hired attourney Gloria Alred because she feels snubbed because Tiger didn't offer HER an apology! What about HER apologizing to Tiger's WIFE for messing up their marriage? :rolleyes:

I can't believe the news channels are still talking about nothing but this. He messed around, got caught, said he's sorry, now move on already!!!! :rolleyes:

There are many things about this that I don't understand. The biggest problem I have is believing his wife would even give a thought to taking him back. Love is love, of course, but c'mon, I wouldn't be able to look at him without wanting to throttle him. If she decides to keep her marriage, she has to be the strongest woman in history.

Alot of the stories about him are no longer in our minds in full detail. But, I just can't forget hearing about his foolish moves almost every day. I was absolutely stunned and sickened that anyone could have this much of a problem and actually carry out his every fantasy. He forgot about his wife and children through all of this. What guarantee does she have that he is not going back to it? None. I really feel for her and her children. The hurt must be almost impossible to bear.:(

Richard::I wish you would write a book about yur Mom and your life. It would be a bestseller. You have such a way with words.:)

I saw a clip of it introducing the people "invited" to his apology blull crap and that's who they introduced her as.

For whatever it is worth, Elin had to attend the recovery centre for a day - it's part of the program - and Tiger had to tell her everything. According to reports, he was just freaking out the day before this. Of course, a therapist was present with Elin and Tiger.

So she didn't decide this lightly - but Tiger has a lot to prove in the future. He's not the only famous person to think the rules don't apply to him. There is a syndrome common to most addicts - it's called "terminal uniqueness". ;)

People don't get addicted to sex, per se - it's the rush, either from a drug or the 'thrill of the kill'. 'Nailed another one!' - another notch, another thrill.

His future actions will tell the story.

ETA: If I were to boycott companies that supported or even employed people that were cheaters or otherwise immoral, I would be homeless, foodless, and a few other things.

There was his Tiger Woods Foundation, the commercials, his wife and kids, his mother, not to mention golf - the tournaments, practices, etc.

Yeah, maybe it's love. Or maybe it's money. Sorry to sound like a cynic, but come on .... the man is worth multi-millions. Money talks ... and some people hear it quite clearly.

Now his mistresses want an apology. Seriously? You are having an affair with a married father ... and a famous one at that, so there is no saying, "He lied and said he was single, I didn't know." And you want an apology? Give me a break!

What a great point. I thought about this awhile back in another way. I was shocked at how busy he was.
I wonder how he would act when he got home. Has he considered acting?:eek:

It sure is true that some people love money so much they can endure anything. Of course we won't ever know all the details so there could be alot more to what they are negotiating. How about all the money she can want and the freedom to do anything she wants?:confused:
