That's really cool....Cassie has a deep chest and used to bolt her food when she was younger. She's slowed down a lot, but still eats like it is going to be taken away from her!
Been considering getting one for Chipper. I'm surprised he doesn't throw up with how fast he eats. :eek:
I actually give casey a bit of food at a time because I am so paranoid about bloat.
This sounds perfect for Maggie. I wonder if they sell that at PetsMart?
Smokey is the only dog I know who actually chews his food.:)
Yep! Saw these a while back.. wanted 2 but they're a lil pricey.
We went to Petsmart and they have a similar bowl, in small medium and large.
We bought two mediums and they seem to work pretty well. Were $6 each I think. Definitely nice for the speed-eaters.

Hmm, interesting concept. I bet you could make one of those -- a bowl, plastic rods, and some super glue. Might not be as purty but bet it'd work!
Even easier is to just put three tennis ball sized balls in the dog dish.. Works until you dog outsmarts you and takes them out as he eats.. lol. Thats what Zeke did. Balls got real dirty too, but it works if you dont want to get an extra dish.Quote:

Those bowls are interesting, I've heard of them. I should get one for Jake, he's not large chested but still eats too fast for my liking.;)

What did the owner say... just "Well I guess we aren't going to win the open blue class this year" How sad is this???? It shouldn't be all about winning...
I visited some other breeders 5-6 years ago... just kennel hopping really.... they were fairly close to where I lived at the time so me and another breeder friend of mine went to look at their dogs. This was before I had anything that bloated.... these breeders were really looking forward to the CCA national specialty that year.. because they FINALLY had a vetran to show... they said this right to us... "Our dogs don't usually make it that long"... the first age group for vetrans is 7-11.... your dogs don't usually make it to 7yrs old???? again... thats pretty sad!!

I get what you mean about letting dogs be dogs. I am somewhat concerned with bloat with Ramone. I add water to his food, but I don't let it soak until it's right soggy. I do wait 30 minutes before or after feeding for exercise... but I don't restrict him from moving about. We don't have a yard for him to rip around in anyways. I do feed him from raised dishes...but not always. I occassionally feed him in his crate so he has to eat off the floor in it.
That's awful about the collie breeders you mentioned. Both the "guess we won't be winning the open blue class" and the ones whose dogs didn't make it past 7. My dobe breeder has quite a few dogs in the double digits age wise and has only had a few bloat cases in over 20 years of breeding. I'm going to ask her what she thinks about there being a genetic factor involved. :)

His sire was I think 7yrs old when he died of bloat...
There are dogs behind the sire who bloated at 5-6-7 yrs of age.... 5yrs of age seems to be the key age for a lot of the dogs behind him though... so again, that is weird.... as several of the dogs (but not all) that have bloated in his pedigree, bloated around 5yrs of age....

Again, like I said before.. I refuse to treat my dogs like they are going to break.... groomers, boarding, dog shows... they can all be stressful places.. life in general can be stressful.. you can't avoid all stressful environments...
I can look at some collie pedigrees and say "This dog bloated at 5yrs of age, and then his mother bloated at 6yrs old, and her mother bloated at 5yrs of age....and her father died of all of the sudden, of unknown causes, they found him dead out in the dog yard - suspected bloat" etc..etc..etc.. when you see pedigrees like this, its obvious its got a genetic link..
