Most classic dog...

O.k,I know this is an odd question,but what is everybody's oppinion on the most classic dog breed?I would have to say a Border Collie!

Well, according to my dog breed book, it's the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, which originated in the Middle Ages. Or, it's the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, which originated in the 900's! That's a loooooong time ago! The Border Collie originated in the 1700's. (I'm going to try to tell everone when their breed originated, unless they already said so!) :)

I would have guessed the Boston Terrier :)

I wanna know when the Beagle originated :D

ilovehounds- the Beagle originated in the 1300's, and the Boston Terrier originated in the 1800's . If anyone wants to know when a certain dog breed originated, ask me please!!! :)

When I think of a "dog" I usually think of a Golden Retriever.

I think of a Collie. I just think Lassie is a classic dog, so that's how I got collie :)

LabLover, wif you don't mind, when did the Basset originate?

I can answer that one "the Basset Hound was developed in Britain toward the end of the (next to) last century" - so, the 1800s.

I, and my references diagree on the Cardigan being the Corgi - Wolfhounds originated centuries before, my book lists their probable date of origin as 100 BC!

Lablover, What about the Chow - how did he/she get the dk. blue tongue? I heard that when God was painting the sky blue some dripped down on earth and the Chow dog licked it up! :p

I would have to say the Golden Retriever as the "classic" dog. I noticed that most of you are putting older dogs more as "antique" dogs. I don't know which one TollSettFK wanted us to do but I think the Golden Retriever (which originated in England in the 1800s) makes the most "classic". Because every time you think of a dog you automaticaly think of something like a Golden Retriever, and that's the kind of dog you always see in movies or commercials as family dogs and such.

Actually, it is said theat the Saluki is the oldest breed of dog, which doesn't surprise me at all. Irish Wolfhounds, Greyhounds, Afghan Hounds, and Borzois are also very old and "antique-like" dogs.

I think I will add the Standard Schnauzer to the list. Rembrandt and Durer included Schnauzers in their paintings and Lucas Cranach the Elder shows a Schnauzer in a Tapestry dated 1501. The Standard Schnauzer was the trusted guard and family dog of the working class in Germany. :)

Siberian Huskies were developed - in Siberia, of course - in the 1800s.

Interesting topic! :) shais_mom is right in that the greyhound is the only breed of dog mentioned in the bible. It is believed to have been depicted in early cave drawings traced as far back as 8000 years, and is a decendent of the dogs depicted and worshiped by the ancient Egyptions. Also, in old England, the greyhound was owned only by the nobility and was used in the sport of coursing. The sight hounds (Saluki's, greyhounds, and pharoah hounds) are amongst the oldest breed of dog :) Cool, huh? :cool:

I think that the Greyhound is the most classic dog.

Daisy's Mom...A collie is the first dog that came into my mind too. When I was a little girl Lassie was my favorite TV Show. We all grew up watching Lassie and hoping that our dogs would be brave enough to save us from all of those life-threatening scenarios that Lassie handled so bravely!

*LabLoverKEB* what source are you using for your numbers? I am getting a different date, if you read my earlier post. I am refering to the Dorling Kindersley Handbook of Dogs by David Alderton.

From a handbook referring to the Tibetan Spaniel breed:
'Tibetan Spaniel dogs can be found on bronzes dating back to the Shang Dynasty in 1100 BC'
So they date back to 1000 years before the birth of Christ. :eek:

I would also say that pugs are a classic breed, I believe that they were bred in China for many years.

Dachshunds- 1900's
Airedale Terrier- 1800's
Pugs- Antiquinty

My reference gives the 1500s as the date for pugs. The Pekinese, who were the "exclusive possesion" of the Chinese emperor until 1860, have an origin date of the 100s.

The Greyhound, it says, dates all the way back to 3000 BC - there are representations of them on Egyptian tombs from way back then.

The Sloughi, a dog I am not very familiar with, has the oldest origin date I can find on a quick flip through my book - 6000 bc!

No offense, but I like my book better - "antiquity" doesn't mean much - just that they didn't bother to look very hard if it was an older breed. I think it's very interesting that pugs and pekinese have such different origin dates - 1500s and 100s, respectively, when I would have guessed that they would be about the same age!

Where is the Grey hound listed in the bible? I never knew that! interesting!
