I saw a rabbit being badly treated in petshop.

I went to a pet shop called 'Two by Two' ( name and shame) here in B'ham England. I was buying Cadbury and Twinkle a new hutch, while I was standing in the line to be served, 2 young assistants had a mini lop baby rabbit at the front of the store. Firsty they started passing it to each other. They where laughing and shouting. At this point I thought poor little thing, you could tell it was frightened as lop rabbits ears hang. This little rabbits ears where back, an indication it was terrified. There was a pile of cussions on the counter the next thing I knew was one of the assistants put the rabbit on top and started to bounce it up and down on top of them. I had never seen anything like it before. The lady behide me said to the ' won't it be frightenen by that. at this point I stepped in by saying yes it would. I asked to speak to the manager but he wasn't there. The lady and i agreed that we would both call tomorrow and make a complaint.

Not a nice experience to witness.:(

Some people don't seem to understand that rabbits are not stuffed animals, they are live creatures with feelings just as a dog or cat or bird. Because they aren't often vocal, people assume less about them. I am glad you both will complain to the manager, hopefully the employees will get a stern talking-to.

That is so mean! Poor little bunny! :( I'm glad you are filing a complaint. Pet shops of that sort should be suspended for scaring and harming innocent little animals!! :mad:

Poor bunny! I'd report it to animal control. I'd also either call the corporate offices of the company (if they have one) and the manager of the store and file a complaint.

That is animal abuse and should not be tolerated. Those kids were employees of the store and should be fired immediately!

That's awful! I hope you do get to call and complain, this shouldn't be allowed!

I just hate that, what is wrong with people. I saw a bird sitting in the trash closet covered in furniture, newspaper and other rubbish. I asked to speak to the manager and threatened to call the police if the bird was not placed in a more proper area. The poor bird did not even have any food or water. The manager said that it ws there because it was sick and should not be around other birds. I told him that the bird was dying without food/water/attention. People just make me sick sometimes.

Do follow-up with the manager and owner of the store. Those clerks have NO BUSINESS working there and if they treat a rabbit like that chances are they'll do something similar to other animals. :mad: :mad: :mad:

And then there are the people who don't understand why some rabbits aren't sweet, lovable creatures wanting to be held and cuddled......after an experience like that, I wouldn't like humans either!!! This is terrible!

Yea I was waiting for her to be like, I jumped in there snatched the bunn yand refused to give it back, I then just walked out. LOL I could see it now! Good call and complain I would! I once complained to the manger for a half hour cause a dog didn't have water. he got kinda mad at me cause he walked away, and I followed him, I wasn't done with him yet.

I think the reason why they had it was because someone was buying it from the store.

I think that they where utterly embarressed by the fact that the other lady and I had spoke our minds.

I tried calling again but had no luck as the manager wasn't there AGAIN. Instead I am writting to him.

THanks Heather for the update. Do write the manager/owner whoever he/she is. That treatment was TOTALLY uncalled for!

Unfortunately we continue to get bunnies turned into the sanctuary. We're accepting only "buinnies in crisis" and have turned away about 15 requests in the past 2 wks....from people who just wanted to give up their bunnies. It is just so terribly sad. I've contacted the local paper, hoping to interest them in the story...we'll see if they are interested. I just don't understand how people can take an animal for a few weeks and then want to give it up...... :mad: :mad:

You know I never ever heard anything from the manager after writting that letter. Bad isn't it!

That was really mean. I get really defensive when animals are mistreated, you remember my reaction to the Ring Pop commercial, and I still havent heard from that company. If I saw them throwing or doing anything to harm and animal, right away I would go up to them and yell. Of course they wouldn't listen to me, though, because of my age....SIGH.....


About the pillow thing..
My friend Faith used to have a hamster (before Angel) named Mia. Mia was torured by her (she was about five or six, she's a lot smarter now). She used to put Mia (aww, this tiny little thing!) on a pillow, and pound the other end of the pillow, and the thing went flying!! Sometimes it even hit the cieling! One day I was over, and she said she wanted to do something funny with Mia, and I thought she meant put a cute little hamster hat on her or something. But she did not put a hat on her, she put her on the pilliow, and slammed on it, and she hit the cieling! While she was hysterical laughing, I was petting the hamster and kissing her and saying that everything was going to be okay (I am a few years older than Faith, and have loved animals all of my life). I thne told her it was NOT funny and that she should stop that instant. Well about a month later I got a call from her mom saying that Mia had died. She said that she hit the cieling too hard and couldn't handle it. That was it. I didn't speak to her for another year. When she was ten, she got a new hamster (Angel), and I was scared that she would do the same thing again. She didn't and she said that she would be nice and kind to her. Well, Angel lived a year, but a long happy one! And she died because she was eaten, and not anything Faith would have done. It made me so mad that she had lied to me, and then actually KILLED the hamster. From then on, I was really concerned AND angry whenever anyone EVER abused an animal, including the Ring Pop company (well, that wasn't really abuse), and my sister. :mad:

See this old post reminded me....YES!!! The Ann Arbor Observer, a local monthly periodical, is going to write an article on bunnies, pet stores and abandonment issues!!! :D :D :D I am so incredibly pleased. It will be in their October issue. They called the sanctuary about 3 weeks ago. We also got a very small bit of PR in a short article in the Detroit News last week about abandonment issues of exotic animals (which includes rabbits!) Wow ! Being a pushy broad occasionally pays off.

I'm on a roll now....I will go after the Ann Arbor News again and probably try the local TV news shows and in a couple of months push for an expanded article in one of the Detroit papers. Odd that this is all happening when it appears that the sanctuary is going to close isn't it? Maybe this PR will help to keep us open, I hope, I hope, I HOPE!!!!!! ;)

So what I really mean to write in the above email was that perhaps you should write a follow-up letter to the pet store that had the boys mistreating the bunnies. It can't hurt and it shows that you have NOT forgotten the incident and are "watching" them. A polite letter with a request for a reply certainly can't hurt and other animals in that store might be spared a similar or worse experience. Just a suggestion..... :)

In my home town I Saw 1 assistant & 2 of his friends teasing this huge parrit (poor spelling) named "Frank" being picked on by these 3 guys, I told them to stop it (I knew the assistant) so what did they do, they started hitting his cage with a mop & calling him a vicious bird, I well duh, look at what ur doing to him. Saddly they didn't stop, so I went in the next day with my mom (my mom saw it aswell & knows the owner) We told here what they were doing & they were banned from the pet store & the assistant was fired & banned aswell. The owner was some upset.
I felt good after that :)

Daisy, yes hopefully some news coverage will save the sanctuary(with any luck) As they say in the UK, 'get stuck in' in other words, 'go for it'. Also a very good idea to send a follow up letter to the manager. Hope you are well!:)

Kingrattus - Well done on informing someone who was able to stop those idiots. I am glad the assistant was fired.

I bet they only said the manager wasn't there, they probably lied,andyway, call and tell the manager, and if you don't think she or he will do anything, you can notify the humane society or someone like that.

earlier tonight I posted about a dog locked in a car, and I emailed someone about it tonight...waiting for a response.. hopefully I will get one tomorrow or I will just call them.
