My poodle only weighs 8 lbs http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif I'm gonna have to say poodles are my favorite small breed. At least one of my favorites. I also really like yorkies, silky terriers, and papillons.

Define "small" - because for some people, anything less than 140 pounds is "small!" And Jackie'sDaisy's schnauzers are the miniature ones, so they're certainly small - or do you mean chihuahua-size? http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/wink.gif
My very favorite small dogs would be toy poodles. Reece to me seems to be a toy or a very, very small miniature. My toys were 7-8 lbs. I also love Yorkies. Aly we think alike!
If we are talking about dogs a little heavier, maybe in the 10-20 lb. range, then I vote for miniature poodles (no surprise there!). Also pugs!!! Love those little faces!
I'll have to change my name to Nobody...because I own a small dog! Our Angel is a Tibetan Spaniel. But tibbies (as they're called) have great self-assurance & believe themselves to be big dogs. So the Tibetan Spaniel breed is often described as a big dog in a small dog's body. To find out about tibbies go to http://www.tibbies.netQuote:

Our Angel's photo appears in the photo gallery there, under 'A'.

My Bandit is a Pug. He is the largest of the Toy group but he's my little baby boy. He's definitly a companion dog. He loves nothing better than to sit on your lap and snore the night (and day) away! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif
My favorite small(er) dogs are welsh corgis, pugs, and miniature poodles. But, my real love is BIG dogs! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif
Oh and Boston Terriers! I love Bostons! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif
Just thought of two more; Schnauzers & Schipperkes. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

My fav small breed is english cocker spaniels. Thay are soo adorable!
i "have" (long story) a rat terrier. i can't say they are my favorite breed of small dog, but since she was my first dog in many years, i am partial to the breed.
some that i like include welsh corgies, minature australian shepherds, min pins, cavilear king charles spaniel*, the bigger chuhuahuas, some dachshunds, and the tibetan spaniel*
* denotes breed that i'm interested in, but have never met.
I have a small miniature poodle. He's 4 months old and weighs 6 pounds. He's a great puppy! I also have a miniature schnauzer who weighs about 25 pounds. Not sure if that's considered miniature.
Aly, Reece has the same collar, tag AND dog bed as Fritz!
Hehe poodle lovers think alike! I think Bella also has a bed almost exactly like Reece's and Fritz's.
small,meaning up 2 about 20 pounds.
Well, Hans should be about 20 pounds but he's a little overweight. Fritz is trying to work those extra pounds off of him though!
Bichon Frise, Minature Poodle, Rat Terrier, Wired Hair Fox Terrier, are the ones that pop into my mind. A friend of mine has a Cockapoo which is much smaller than mine, and probably comes in about 20 lbs.
For me any dog that is fullgrown and is under 30 pounds is small. I don't have any experience with small dogs but i like how corgies look.
Well as everyone knows Mini Schnauzers, independent, fiesty, loving when they feel like it http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif and very territorial and protective.
Perry is somewhere between a Standard and Mini, he weighs about 26 pounds. Daisy is a true Mini, she weighs about 15 pounds.
If I was to get another dog I think it would be a "Schnoodle" they are so sweet and cute as can be.

This topic got me thinking. I have never really had a large dog (over 45 lbs.) because the dogs I grew up as a child with were 20 lbs. or under. That's kind of what I feel comfortable with now as an adult. I am wondering how many people have sort of stuck with the same size dog over the years or completely changed their preferred size of dog as they got older. Just wondering....
Yes, Aly, Bella's bed looks similar although she has now completely outgrown it and Andy has claimed it!
Well if Basset Houdns count, they're definitely my favorite... but they have little dog legs and big dog everything else so I am not too sure what they are! LOL but I do love Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (that was Mom's second choice of breed), and Dachshunds! I also have always loved pugs.
Pam, during the years, lots of years, we have had all sizes.
We started with a white mini poodle named Pierre, then we had a very large Boxer named Duke, we have had two Weiner Dogs, Maggie and Hilda, then a Bassett hound named Charlie, after that we had a Rottweiler named Kate ( after Katherine Hepburn) then a Schnauzer, Kona ( after one of our favorite islands) then came Miss Daisy ( you guessed it after the movie "Driving Miss Daisy" , then came Dom Perignon ( we didn't pick that name the breeder did, we could hardly afford him let alone the champagne. So he is Perry http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif"

Pam, the biggest dogs I've had were a yellow lab and an airedale. I was in my 30's when I had them and used to have achy arms from trying to control them. From there we went to the cockapoos, 25 - 30 lbs. (Okay, Hannah is slightly over that right now, but like the weight on my driver's license, I'm going to just leave that figure as is.) Our next dog might not be for another 8 years. By then the label "senior citizen" will be unavoidable, so it will definitely be a small dog.
to Pam:
though i've been around all sorts of dogs, i've been a big dog person my whole life. nothing better than a huge fuzzy body to cuddle up to. and i prefer the longer softer coats.
Don't forget about Sophie the wonder Papillon! Most of you who have been here for a while know about her...
Yes Sophies Daddy I will add papillons to my list of lovely small dogs. Sorry to have forgotten that wonderful breed!
Rachel, How well I understand what you are saying. Bella is a heavy little lady to lift into the tub! Next pup will be a small one too. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif When you get that next puppy, Rachel, it might be a good time to pick up that kitty that you have been thinking about while you are at it. They will be great friends quite easily if adopted at the same time!

Pam,
I've completely changed the size of dog I have. I went from a 90 pound boxer to a miniature poodle! I love dogs in all sizes!

I love chihuahuas!
[OK, folks. Here's my vote: "TOY FOX TERRIERS"....our Maggie will be 13 years old in September and she is the most loving, smart and adorable dog that anyone could or ever want. She loves to go for bike rides, lay on the deck and watch the squirrels, who, by the way, are not afraid of her. I would recommend a toy fox for everyone! Hope you decide on getting one!! Take care.QUOTE]Originally posted by TollSettFK:

I don't really have a preference as to the size just as long as it's a hound dog thats all that matters http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif Hannah even though shes about 25-30 pounds she still thinks shes a little lap dog. They don't realize their own size and I don't really care what their size is either http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

If I could ever get over my addiction to Golden Retrievers, I would have a Wire Hair Terrier, a Papillon or a Bichon,
My little digs that I own are two Beagles and a Beagle mix. Their names are Tank, Mr. Beagley, and Hazel. I don't know what my favorite small dogs would be but I think MinPins and Chihuahuas probably.
what abt shih tzus?i juz picked up mine yesterday.she's 2 mths old.
I LOVE SHIH TZUS. I have three of them so guess I better..lols.They are so lovable and devoted, make a wonderful companion and friend,a little stubborn at times, but they are so sweet and cute, you tend to overlook that little fault.Patches thinks he has to go everywhere I do and generally does. They are very loyal and affectionate,My personalQuote:

opinion is you could not have made a better choice though there are lots of breeds that fit the same description, shih tzus are definitely at the top of my list.I also have to puppies that are sisters at 9 wks old, they are Ashley and Shila. My next favorite breed would have to be pugs. I have 2 of them also,as well as a very special little blu eyed mini doxie named Sparkles with bright blu eyes, plus a boxer who thinks he is as little as they are named Buddy Lee.My pugs are Pebbles and Snuggles. They are all my gang and very best friends.I am sure you will love your shih tzu. What is her/his name? If you have any questions please ask. I am no expert, but am pretty familiar with shih tzus.Me as well as anyone on here will help any way we can...Sandy
My husband's grandmother has a chihuahua, and he is a pretty smart little dog, but I really don't care for the breed. My idea of a small dog is Mama Dog, who is about 45 lbs. I did have a beagle when I was young and she was a really good dog. However, I do prefer big dogs.
I have a little American Cocker Spaniel. People say that they aren't good with kids but she grew up with 5 or 6 kids because my mom used to babysit alot.
We have always had mid size dogs but now we have Ricky. A wonderful 6 lb long-haired chihuahua. I used to be of the opinion that chihuahuas were obnoxious, noisy little ankle bitters but then I got Ricky and I discovered that it is often how you raise them from the very beginning. Ricky loves everyone, rarely barks but will let you know if someone is too close to our motorhome or house. He licks instead of bites and is the best lap dog I have ever come across. So I guess my favorite small dog is the long haired chihuahua.
To see why I love chihuahuas, go to my webshots and see Ricky. http://community.webshots.com/user/mhmama[/IMG]
Oh my gosh! Ricky is sooo cute! I love the picture titled "sleepy baby." He is adorable.
Ricky sure is a lovely subject for your vacation photos. May I borrow him for my next trip? :)
Jack Russel Terriers!  ;) :)
