Okay, so I started the pups on Raw food. I give them a mixture of a lot of things. Scruff started coughing yesterday and sneezing/coughing last night. He woke up and was coughing/sneezing pretty bad. Could it be the change of food? Is it normal? Or could he be allergic to something? Or is it just a cold? Any ideas fellow PTers?

Yes it could be a food allergy. Depending on what was fed the dog might have aspirated a particle of food up into the nose causing the sneezing. Or something in the raw mixture might have made the esophagus raw. Switch the dog back and avoid the problems.Quote:

The key is to add one item at a time gradually, thereby being able to note anything that suddnely seems to cause a problem and thus removing that from the diet. That sounds totally independant of this. This is the time of year kennel cough runs more rampant .. ( not sure why- I forgot.).. If the sneezing continues- run by the vet. Also if the dog was recently at the vet, the dog could have picked this up.Quote:

Thank you guys. I feel better now. I am giving Scruff a Vitamin C tablet once a day (starting yesterday) and I will keep an eye on him. He has a vet apt on Friday. I will see how he is by then, and if he is not better, I will run it past the Dr. Thanks again..I feel better now.
Take a look at the number of posts on health now for kennel cough. I heard it was because although cold- the dogs start interacting with other dogs is the reason for the increase with kennel cough this time of year.. Let us know what he says.
Yep, mine enjoy eating that garbage everyday, day after day after day. Being after 3PM, and close to their feeding, they are already starting to pester me for more garbage.Quote:

Probably any condition that allows crowding be it several in a pen or kennel will do the trick due to the contagious nature of the disease. But until one sees copious amounts of mucus coming out of the nose (usually of an unpleasant color), Kennel Cough is a secondary possibility. In each dog I've had with KC, it started out as a clear discharge and changed over to extremely mucoid and copious in amount within 12-24 hrs. Indeed aspiration is rare, but after reading some of the threads in the past of what people feed their dogs, it can't be discounted. If a mixture of a lot of things means meat and veggies then a foreign object causing a reflex reaction is probably remote. But add in feathers, fur, or bones, and it remains a possibility.
Oh well, time to get out of yet another religious raw thread.
feathers??? fur??? lol.. You really do not understand raw I would guess. You do know that commercial diets can include- beaks, feathers, cancerious tumors, hide- etc and AFCO will call it protein. As stated- you can make 25 percent protein and 15 percent fat by soaking beef hide- with oil..
Given that option- no thank you- I feed raw- I KNOW what goes in the bowl- piece by piece-.. No puzzles I have to worry about..

Reachoutrescue- my vet also promotes raw diet as well.. And makes a joke " even if that means I only see you once a year for the heartworm test- at least they are healthy..

Wow. I was not trying to start a debat. I was just to get some suggestions about my dog. I don't care what you guys feed your dogs, that was just my opinion. No need to make enimies here. Sorry if I angered anybody. :(
You angered noone dont worry. We are here to help one another and to AGREE TO DISAGREE. I feed mine dry food and just got these treats that he loves......but if raw works for you and your pups GREAT it doesnt work for all and thats fine.....Anyway on another note I would like some thoughts on these new treats I havent given any to Mister yet my moms friend sell the dog food line and gave me a box for me to try...well you knew what i meant. Again any thoughts are welcome.......

Throw in a one day starvation period to help them purge or whatever the reason? Aaah now I have the solution. Next weekend no more scolding when we go to the pond for a swim. If they really want to go swim out and snack on the deer floating near the one pond edge, I'll encourage them to go for it! What could be a more natural feeding than that??? :D

I am sorry- but I take the diet very seriously.. Its the main thing I can do daily to insure their health.
I believe that was my frozen bunny thread. A friend of mine's cats killed a rabbit in their house and I fed it to Jasper. Gee, he didn't get lepto, blockages, intestinal perforation, or anything but a good meal from it. Dragondawg likes to stir up trouble in any thread concerning the raw diet, or in fact diet in general.
My vet is very supportive of feeding a well-researched raw diet, and while he's not on it right now due mostly to time constraints, I do feed Jasper raw as often as I can. Even though he's on super premium foods the rest of the time, I do notice a difference. He's got more doggy odor on kibble, and he sheds more. His coat is soft and shiny and his energy and spirits are high regardless.
All the same, Jasper eagerly gobbles up processed food, junk that's been left on the ground, dead animals, and cat poop, so I don't think enthusiasm is a good gauge of food quality. :P
ohhhhh well if the meat was fresh that was fine- and I seriously doubt you fed your baby the fur.. lol... I was totally confused-.. Thank you for telling me..And doggie odor- you are right.. I noticed that too in the month of December when I had to put them on kibble- and it was a good one too.. I also noticed "dog breath" something I never had before- and has since stopped.
I waited until the rabbit had been frozen for a bit and then actually, I gave him the entire rabbit...fur, nails, teeth, and all. I was concerned about it initially, but he pulled away the parts he didn't want to eat and ate the rest. The fur passed without incident. :)

Funny how this whole thing began as a question from a newbie to RAW.
I did PM Reachoutrescue, and told her it is highly unlikely that RAW has a thing to do with their coughing. However they may be coughing and sneezing due to their body adjusting to a better diet , while they are releasing toxins that may be irritatating to their system.
I have been feeding RAw since 1979.Long before it was fashionable, and certainly while most of the breeders and show ppl still thought I was nuts. If Eukanuba is hosting a Show then it must be great food! at least that was the mentality back then.
I fed RAW because I grew up on a farm and you couldnt pay my grandmother to buy dog food. Her collies lived off what we did.Fresh meats and veggies if they wanted them and straight meats if they didnt. I guess I never really thought about it back then, it was just a lifestyle for me, and for my ister and brother too, who btw all feed RAW.
And yes my guys do at times get fur or feathers, depends on whom went hunting.I have friends that bring perfectly clean carcass remains to me, and some that will still have a bit of hide or feather attached, I feed as is.
I also know the diet she is feeding as far as a receipe.. lol..

I do very much doubt it was the Raw diet causing this, I've never had any coughing/vomiting issues at all, after feeding a huge variety of RMB's. His throat should not be scratched or raw from the bones, because all of his RMB's should be covered in a thick layering of muscle meat... as I'm sure you know.

My grandfather had collies- he did the same as you know..
I wish I had known in 1979 about raw.. then 1983-1984 would not have happened. In 1984 is when I started- I didnt realize that until last night when I read this post- Then I looked it up in my dog photo albums- and that is the date my dog died in bloat. And I agree- in 1979 was my first time on my own in college- and my very first " my own dog".. And Eukenuba and Iams was the top of the line- so they said..
I met someone at a dog show a few years back, and we have since become fellow friends in the dog world. She said she remembers when Eukenuba was like a pulverized type of food- like Abady- and she faults going commercial- now as common you can buy it at a walmart. Whether that is all the facts- I am not sure- but the timing makes sense completely..
