indeed, beck is a special and wonderful cat and you should give him all the attention he wants, work be damned. that is a fantastic photo of him - this from a professional photographer of no small repute.

i can relate. even as i type these words, there is a black cat snuggled up on my left arm, cozy against my chest. he climbed up and settled down there about one half hour ago, while i was still working, and shows no inclination to move. that is why there are no capital letters in this post. i am typing with one hand - a slow process that would only be made slower by capitalization. this happens all the time, even when i am on deadline and i never shoo him away for he is my treasured friend and it would not be right.

climb those blinds, beck. climb high, as high as you can go.

and may your buddy always rescue you, whether or not you actually need to be rescued.

Hi Beck,

I recognize that pose. Emily likes to sit on my papers and in front of the computer screen. I think that all cats have a natural affinitiy for paper, but we love them anyways. He may like climbing the blinds, but he is too cute to scold (to much).

Here are some cat commandments for the next time he jumps on the blinds:

Cat Commandments

Thou shall not jump onto the keyboard when thy human is on the modem.

Thou shall not pull the phone cord out of the back of the modem.

Thou shall not unroll all of the toilet paper off the roll.

Thou shall not sit in front of the television or monitor as thou are transparent.

Thou shall not projectile vomit from the top of the refrigerator.

Thou shall not walk in on a dinner party and commence licking thy butt.

Thou shall not lie down with thy butt in thy human's face.

Thou shall not leap from great heights onto thy human's genital region.

Fast as thou are, thou cannot run through closed doors.

Thou shall not reset thy human's alarm clock by walking on it.

Thou shall not climb on the garbage can with the hinged lid, as thee will fall in and trap thyself.

Thou shall not jump onto the toilet seat just as thy human is sitting down.

Thou shall not jump onto thy sleeping human's bladder at 4a.m.

Thou shall realize that the house is not a prison from which to escape at any opportunity.

Thou shall not trip thy humans even if they are walking too slow.

Thou shall not push open the bathroom door when there are guests in thy house.

Thou shall remember that thou are a carnivore and that houseplants are not meat.

Thou shall show remorse when being scolded.

Not to be cantankerous, but in regards to the "cat commandments" I must emphatically state that a "cat commandment" is a foolish and worthless thing, for no cat was born to be commanded.

"Thou shalt not command thy cat."

"Thou shalt love, adore and indulge thy cat, for whatever thy cat may damage, destroy, or disrupt - no matter how valuable, precious, important or vital - is of far less worth than thy cat."

"Thou shalt recognize that thy cat is not thy cat at all, but rather, thou dost belong to it and thus thou shalt act accordingly, even by acting in obediance to all commands that the feline may levy upon thee."

That is only three commandments, not ten, but three is quite enough.

Beck! Our cat Cosmo is an orange boy. Cosmo is the most handsome orange cat I've seen, BUT you come pretty darn close! You are just adorable and I'm sure your people are so proud of you today.

Thank you, Emily's mom, for the commandments, we laughed our butts off at work today. The above particularly validate some things I have experienced, some of which no one believed, until now. Frostfrog, we all know the vows we take that you reminded us of, in your usual eloquent way! Most cats require we swear to this before they will grace us with their presence.

But, if you've ever had to explain to a disbelieving boss that your cat stepped on the alarm, if you've ever come home to find out your boyfriend gave the cat flying lessons when she landed, claws out, on his privates as he slept, if you have ever cleaned up green, leafy kitty barf after your favorite houseplant was trashed while the cat grass was ignored, if you've ever rolled over to cuddle your cat as you napped only to get a noseful of the non-furry part, if you've ever sat on or tripped over your feline owner, you have to laugh at these commandments! Because we all know the truth: these are commandments that we have to abide by, in reverse!!

So, Beck, hope you had a great day, and totally indulged all your feline rights!!
