Watching the news can sometimes be so unbearable

I've been watching the news on the situation in Lebanon today, and the images being shown on the news have brought tears to my eyes. The situation is terrible. So many innocent men, women, and children have been killed. They were just showing the coffin of a one day old baby, who hadn't even been named yet, killed in the attacks by Israel. :(

I cannot comprehend. I cannot comprehend how a nation such as Israel can go about bombing and killing innocent people, while the whole world remains silent. I cannot comprehend how we can manage to see images of young children being killed, their bodies in the hospital beds, their mothers crying over the loss of their children and husbands at once, and not feel their pain, or shed tears for them. I feel such intense pain in my heart right now, seeing these images, and knowing its real. I feel so much pain thinking how we are all having fun and enjoying life, while there are so many people in this world who are losing their lives, for no reason, for committing no crime. I cannot help but feel that if these victims were 'someone else', or if Israel was 'someone else', the global response would have been completely different.

Just now, they were showing a women and her children in Lebanon, telling their story. The family was trying to flee the city, but the moment they tried to leave their home, the Israeli soldiers started shooting at them. There was a wounded man outside, so they got scared and ran back inside the house. These people are citizens of America too.

My heart is breaking for all these people. For the past few days, everytime I watch the news, I find myself crying. My husband constantly tells me to turn it off, because he can't bear to see it. The sight of severely wounded children breaks him down to tears. I can't stand this. I can't stand these horrible baseless wars. I can't stand to see all of these innocent people being killed mercilessly. It is so painful to watch...so painful, and if you think about it, the pain we feel in watching it is nothing. Imagine the people who are feeling it. Imagine the mother who just gave birth to her baby, was excited to choose a name for him and take him home to her family, only to have him killed the next day. Imagine the women who lost their husbands and children at the same time. Imagine the men who lost their mothers and wives. Imagine the people who are left homeless because of the bombs that destroyed their towns. The mass graves they were showing on CNN were unbearable to watch. I cannot imagine being in such a situation, yet the fact is, so many innocent people, innocent families like ourselves are going through this intense pain. It is something I can't understand. All I know is that I am sick of war. So many innocent lives are being wasted and lost for no reason. Sometimes I wish war didn't exist. I wish we lived in a perfect world. Unfortunately, we don't. I wish there weren't so many cruel human beings in this world. I wish. :(

It is no wonder there is so much hate being spread in this world. The reason is so clear. When children grow up in such war zones, what else would come to their minds? Any human being would hate a nation who brought such destruction to their families, villages, towns, cities, countries. Any one. Any human being would hate a nation, when all they see from their birth, and throughout their childhood is their family members being killed, their homes destroyed, their cities destroyed, and ending up living in refugee camps because of it their whole lives. I wish all of this crap would just stop, and that the evil governments of this world would learn to leave innocent civilians alone. :(

Our prime minister in Canada has angered MANY, if not MOST, Canadians by calling Israel's actions "a measured response." And that is a direct quote.

And now, apparently, Israel is stopping the shelling until they 'investigate' the destruction of the town you mentioned.

Investigate? Watch the video footage, that'll tell you all you need to know.

And all the UN observer posts gone...after Israeli bombs destroyed one, and killed all four neutral people, including a Canadian.

Being neutral or civilian doesn't seem to much matter any more.

Popcornbird - you are so right about the children. I wish we could just make them all safe and teach them realities that don't involve revenge...and we have to watch what we teach our children at home.

Please take care of yourself - you can only change this by starting with yourself and your own children, if and when you have them.

I never quite understood the huge adoption of Vietnamese children and babies after the war with the US - now I do understand part of it. Rescue them from learning hate, as much as possible...

All WAR IS HELL and so terribly unfair to the thousands of innocents caught in the battle. AND SENSELESS - Yes.

We Americans have romanticized war in movies and stories so much so that we actually believe that "only' the enemy is ever defeated and that innocent civilians are left alone - in fact, treated well. But having had family members fight in WWII, The Korean War and Vietnam, I can say that I know that not to be totally true. I believe it is "generally" the intent of the ground soldiers and actual combatants, but things go awry and plans get changed and decisions are made on moments notice. It is very, very, very sad.

I don't know the answer for a solution to the violence in the Middle East. Obviously. I am not alone, as no one has seemed to be able to resolve these differences for the last several thousand years. It is a terrible, terrible tradegy. It is a very complex situation, complicated even further by religious differences. Additionally, when war is being waged in a metropolitan area and the combatants are mixed amongst the civilians, the results are diastrous.

I hope and pray that things improve and that a cessation to WAR is TOMORROW!

you know I love you so I will say this only once, Hate is taught at home. By the most "innocent " comments. i.e. oh no honey don't ask him to your bar mitzvah he isn't Jewish. Or honey I am sure Ibrahim doesn't want to come to your communion. Insert names religions here. I teach Religion ancient and Modern. Guess what? they all believe in the same basic things. Love one another. Do not hurt those smaller or less fortunate. Someone/thing(s) is in control of this all, we can control our path but not our purpose. Sweetness and light at some point (insert name here ...heaven, Nirvana, Summerglade, Valhalla) or torture and despair, (again insert name of choice) No one not a one knows if we are right, we won't know until we have passed and learned for ourselves. Therefore we all need to accomadate the fact that we are ALL right. Tolerance is a dish best served among many. Hate is a dish that only feeds the dying and the dead.

When I was 19, I had a fellow interested in me; he was of another faith...never mind that my own household didn't follow the faith into which they were born - but heck, we hadn't even really DATED - and my mom got alarmed and told me, "He can never marry you!" I think that had more to do with the number of children left parentless by the war, or parents displaced and unable to care for their children, and the extreme prejudice mixed-race babies (fathered by American servicemen) faced in their culture.

Popcornbird, I know it us awful, unbearable to watch.

All that we, as human beings of conscience can do, is to vote for policticians who do not preach hate or run for office ourselves, work in our own communities and the world to try to eliminate the causes of hate, and educate everyone we meet that hate is not the way the world should be. These last two week have been awful, awful, awful. The situation is so complicated between Hezzbollah and Lebanon and Israel, and I feel the most sorry for the innocents who get hurt and killed in any war.

Anyone, if they try hard enough, can find a reason to hate someone else, and consider them less worthy human beings. The harder part is convincing people not to hate.

It's really awful to think that these missiles are tossed off without any thought as to where they will land.

Back in the first week of July a rocket was shot off and hit the beach in Israel
before all this began.

Three soldiers were kidnapped from their posts-They were just doing their jobs.

Funny, the people that start trouble are never held accountable.

Most of the news coverage is pretty bad.

It never explains that the terrorists are using people as pawns.
It never explains why 1400 rockets have been shot over the border.
It never explains who began the whole mess.


I was watching a report where a small child was in a hospital.

The parent was screaming about the phosphorus being used in the bombs dropped from airplanes.

The problem?

No phosphorus in any of the air dropped munitions.

(One of the funniest things abuout war is that there are rules as to what can be used..)


NO ONE HAS COMPLAINED ABOUT THE BALL BEARINGS-WHICH ARE A HUGE NO-NO as far as the 'rules'...

I guess it's OK for some godless cowards to use a weapon like that....
then complain about the retaliation. :confused:

Popcornbird, it IS horrible!! I just can't bear to watch much of it, but what I have seen is very cruel! I think as long as people have the attitude that they want revenge, it will never stop. :( :( :(

I agree PCB, I can hardly watch anymore. I have been turning the channel lately, because I just sit there in shock. It makes me sick to think of the innocents being killed, especially the children.

that it does happen to others and we rarely hear about it.
Religious Hate crimes are high not only in the middle east, but all around
the world and I am not speaking of crimes against Muslims.

After the US went into Iraq I remember all the heated arguments
on Pet Talk. So I have tried to stay away from controversial subjects.
It makes me sick the killing of the innocent no matter what side you are on.
But what can one do when terrorists use innocent human life
as a shield and they attack you? (I am not just talking about
what is happening currently between Israel and Lebanon)
Talks through the years have not worked and agreements
have been broken. Terrorists groups were suppose to be dismantled
per the UN and peace agreements,
and neither was done. Now these groups are a bigger threat.
(the major terrorists groups are smart and help the poor in their
region, otherwise they would not have been so readily tolerated.)
The middle east is so complex with generations of
hatred, I certainly do not have the answers.

There is some truth to that but I believe it stems from a total feeling of exasperation and lack of any new ideas - as well as some some long held bigotted beliefs.

I also agree with KYS' response in that atrocities are happening everywhere around the globe and that nothing is being done to help or prevent the loss of innocent life elsewhere (as well as in Lebanon). Often we see the world, it's events and happenings through our own "religious, cultural or historical" EYES!

When the BALTIC STATES WERE AT WAR - Serbia and Croatia a few years back - remember Milosevich?

A lot of horrible atrocities and ethnic cleansing was taking place. Being of Croatian ethnicity (2nd Generation) I knew a little more about the troubled past and old feuds between these two "VERY SIMILAR", yet different peoples. My parents are children of Croatian Immigrants... and of course, "Let me tell you", there was "NO" telling them "WHO" was at fault and who was doing what... It was undeniably "CLEAR" to them that it was the SERBIANS "who were at it AGAIN"!!!

I tried to keep an open mind and not harp on past "wrongdoings, old he saids, she saids, he started its". I was hoping for a fresh start... a new beginning and an end to the long standing feuds and senseless violence. Heck, before the war, Serbs and Croats had been living together for generations now and intermarrying, etc.

If you do not know much about these people, let me tell you. It is hard to tell them apart. Same genetic gene pool, SAME EXACT LANGUAGE, same culture, foods, dress, dance and both Christian (for the most part). Differences and feuds began a "LONG" time ago and are still held onto by many (someone mentioned how HATE is LEARNED and passed on through generations). I don't want to into because it is so convoluted and complex and STUPID.

POINT IS... my parents had already decided who's side they were on and had a totally different perspective than perhaps someone else who was watching "the same news coverage". An interesting point is that one day I was casually discussing recent events with an associate who has a very Serbian/Croatian sounding name - like mine is. He is the same age as me - 47 and "totally Americanized". We are Americans and really have "no current attachment" to our former countries. Well... as I said, it is hard to tell a Serb from a Croat and the names sound exactly the same. We were talking in Serbo-Hrvatski (same language) and he must have just assumed I was a Serb, when he went into a tirade of allegations, accusations and comdemnations of the "damn" Croats!!! LOL!!! - not really, but nothing to begin a "new feud over". Point is, we are both Americans, have no stake in the outcome of this war and both desparately would like to see an end to the age old violence and WAR, but he "sees things" very differently and through "his culturally and historically 'learned' eyes"!!!

The explosion kills and wounds 50-60 people.....

Outrage?

None.

It becomes news when someone of a different religion/background kills the same amount of people, wth a bomb lobbed from a distance.

I guess killing people, while making eye contact, makes the difference. :(

I would like to believe that if the world was run by women, the outcome/problems would be entirely different, with much less violence and hatred. I think its a Testosterone Problem!. I am sorry if this offends anyone, especially the men. My comment is not based on anything I have read - just my feelings about wars/war games and violence.

I am anti-war. I am a flower child.

My heart goes out to all of the families involved in the horrid events around the world. Africa is undoubtedly the most impoverished area of the world filled with every kind of tragic circumstance possible.

When will it end? Never. Not in my life time, anyway.

We can all help by being nice to our neighbors, friends and family...including our own animals.

Oh please. Testosterone makes for aggression and strength. Women with more testoserone are more aggressive. Men with higher levels of testosterone are more aggressive.

As for the Tsarinas, every time the Russian crown tranferred up until the latter part of the 19th century there was incredible bloodshed and maneuvering. The succession was laid out on paper, but there was always a fight for the crown.

Boudica was a warrior who took power and launched a revolution against the romans.

Queen Victoria was every bit as ruthless as her male (and female) contemporaries. For 75 years the sun never set on the British Empire, regardless of the body count (which was never kept)

The only difference between modern rulers and rulers from earlier times is the fact that weapons have gotten more efficient. If Sophia (Peter's regent) had had modern weapons in her arsenal the body count would have been just as high as Herr schickelgruber's.

I still stand on my comment/feelings about women being more compassionate and less violent than men, in general, therefore would make, as a group, a less violent group of leaders. Of course there are violent women.

I am not going to argue or debate with you. I think you have missed the point of this very serious thread....and have taken it in a direction it was not intended to go. I was not asking for a lesson in history. I merely stated my feelings - and at the time mentioned that it had nothing to do with what I had read (or not read)........

Men, women, whatever...there are good and bad in both genders. I agree that women tend to be more on the compassionate side, but there are men out there who also have very tender hearts. I don't think its that. It is the wicked regimes that commit these crimes.

If any nation came and invaded any other nation, and started bombing their towns and killing their people, the inhabitants of the 'attacked' land have every right to fight back and defend themselves, their wives, children, people, and ANYONE would do that if their land has been invaded. ANYONE. When a nation oppresses and kills mercilessly, they deserve a return in the treatment. Lebanon did not invande Israel. Israel invaded Lebanon.

Anyone who thinks Israel is not being the world's biggest terrorist has major issues, and a biased nature. Its not like its anything new though. They have always been like this, and they will always be. It is nothing new. Nothing new. They have always bulldozed neighborhoods of innocent families, and left those people either dead or injured. They have always targetted innocent civilians mercilessly. I have friends of Palestinian origin who have witnessed with their own eyes, Israeli troops pointing their guns at Palestinian children and laughing. I don't care what anyone says to me for saying this. It is the plain truth. The people in that region have suffered tremendously over the decades in the hands of Israel, and it is completely unjustifiable. :(:(:( The saddest part is the whole damn world has their mouth shut as we sit here, enjoying our luxurious lifestyles, while so many are being killed for no reason. :( I cannot even bear the thought. We cannot even begin to imagine the pain and suffering those people are going through. These people who are being killed are not soldiers there to fight. They are not strong men. They are innocent children. Innocent women. Old men. Innocent children, toddlers, babies. :(:(:(:(:(

PCB, Have you read the autobiography of Queen Noor. She was the American who married the king of Jorday. I think she is pretty eloquent about the problem of Israel and what it gets away with.

Less than 24 hours after Israel was created as a nation it was attacked by the combined armies of Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Egypt. This most current round of middle eastern violence started in 1948, not 2006.

Under a UN resolution, Syria agreed to leave Lebanon, and Lebanon agreed to police its interior and rid itself of terrorist groups, most notably Hezbollah. Syria complied with the resolution, and left Lebanon in 2004. (They had no choice, they were getting hammered in the news because they got caught assasinating the Lebanese Prime Minister) Lebanon failed rid itself of hezbollah. Two Israeli soldiers were kidnapped, one on the northern border and one near Gaza, and numerous Katyusha rockets were fired into Israeli territory from Lebanon. The last Israeli soldier who was kidnapped by Hamas came back to his family in pieces.

Lebanon failed to police itself, and Israel was attacked from Lebanese soil. No nation can sit idly by while it is being attacked, and Israel has taken action.

Hezbollah has used civilians as shields, and continues to do so, as shown in numerous photographs smuggled out of the war zone by various correspondents. Israel, like the US, has not DELIBERATELY targeted civilians. Hezbollah has deliberately put civilians in harm's way.

The UN outpost that was hit by Israeli aircraft was being used by hezbollah as a shield, and was broadcasting troop positions on an unencrypted channel, thus giving hezbollah intelligence information on where the Israeli troops were. Israel has lodged numerous complaints with the UN on this issue in the past, and the complaints have gone unheeded. No commander in their right mind can allow their troops to be compromised. The UN forces are supposed to be neutral, and encryption is readily available. They could have complied with Israels requests, they didn't. The UN put their own forces in harm's way by failing to practice what any soldier could tell you is basic operational security.

You began a very eloquent thread with your viewpoint of what is happening in the mideast...you are an individual part of the world as I am...I am sad and hurting just as you are. People I know are just as upset and concerned....but MY viewpoint is just as valid as yours.

This is happening on both sides of the war. The news continually shows us videos taken in Lebanon - but these same things are happening down in Israel. Those same innocent children, women, toddlers and babies who are Israeli civilians are also being killed and hiding in fear....enduring pain and suffering also....the awful reality of war. The difference is that the Israeli civilians are not being hit because they have terrorists hiding in their midst.

I agonize as I review history and try to be informed - I try to see both sides, but I do not see in any way that Israel can be described as terrorist. Come on. If I was a Muslim, I would no doubt have my loyalties with my Arab background....and yes I can certainly see the anger at the Jewish Nation......of course...but that view must be made more clear and informed with the awful reality that the Arab countries are home to the biggest terror threat to our world as a whole. :(

Maybe you don't have the same ties I have with my homeland which is America...I read in another post that you do not have that same pride to call yourself American...but you ARE American. You enjoy the same freedoms that I do and while your loyalty may or may not be what mine is....you cannot deny that what we have in our democratic government is a wonderful blessing.

Please know that the rest of the world is not necessarily being silent. People of all views have to be in agony as you are. I can't get into who attacked who...there is no fair comparison to defending freedoms and wanting the same security for another people (the reasonable people of Lebanon), with a people (Hezbollah, Hamas, Jordan, Iraq, Syria, Egypt...) who harbor the evil of terrorism. They simply cannot be compared rationally.

I hate war...and I have been taken aback by some of the draconian responses of Israel.....and I have been taken aback by the suicide bombers who, for example, enter a restaurant...in Israel...where people going about the ordinariness of life....and die....horribly....without regard to age, gender, religion, nationality, or occupation.

I remember the Yom Kippur War. The people of Israel observing the most sacred holiday...the Day of Atonement....attacked when they were at worship...most vulnerable. Women, children, old people. Their land was invaded, their people attacked. Can you imagine an attack on Eid?

I don't know exactly where the truth is here...nor what the solution is...but there has been too much killing. I would hope a person of true compassion would look at ALL the sides to this issue and not simply accept propaganda....regardless of from whom it comes or for whom it is felt.

OK lets all take this in to perspective on the innocent. I am an ex US Marine. I was in 1st Battalion 8th Marines in Beruit in October 1983. I was there to watch Hezballah blow up the HQ's Facility. 241 Marines and hospital personel, men and women alike died for being there to help. What about all those innocent sons and daughters of parents in the U.S. Remember we were there for a Peace Keeping mission. I lost some good friends that day!!!! Isreal has a right to defend against these terrorists. They have been getting bombed for years and just taking it. All the civilians were worned with leaflets dropped in the areas that were going to be invaded. Perhaps the ones that didn't flee to the refugee camps were Hazbollah followers. No mention that Hezboullah (sp?) struck first and kidnapped the Israeli soldiers...nope...just make the Israelis into monsters because they defend themselves and then make a big deal about the weapons that they use being from the U.S. That's it...the big bad U.S. The country that can't win for losing because if we don't go in then we're being selfish and unwilling to help and if we do go in then we are imperialistic bastards for going into stop the violence.

Then our illustrious leader decides that we need to send troops to Lebanon and doesn't realize that he is playing directly into the terrorists' hands by spreading our military too thin. ACK!!!

There always has to be 2 diametrically opposed sides and I don't understand it sometimes....it would be nice if we could just get along, but, even on here people can't agree, so why should we think that we could ever globally agree?

Oh well, there's my soapbox and I'll be stepping down now!
