Look who's home!
That's right we finally brought him home! He's being such a good boy so far. However I think the painkillers from his sirjury are playing a big part in his good behavior! He seems to be doing well, we've taken him outside twice to see if he had to go potty. We even ran into a kitty when we were outside! He didn't even blink! He looked at the cat then just kept on walking. What a good boy! He still hasn't met the kitties, we are going to wait a few days. But he saw the rats in their cage and didn't seem intersted in them at all!
According to his records he weighs just under 20 lbs, but he needs to put on some weight, he looks underweight. He has an appointment with the vet for a checkup on Saturday. What should we ask? Someone mentioned asking the vet about a heartworm preventative and a flea and tick repelant. Can you all suggest good brands and which ones are bad. Anything else to ask the vet about?
Now for the good things :)
We "think" we might call him Dewey. We aren't totally sure as we want to get to know him a little better before deciding for sure. And.... the pictures!
This was outside the humane society, Alexa was saying hello and good bye because after we picked him up she had to go to work :(

He was happy to get into my truck.
Can we go home now!

even though hes kinda thin, thats the cutest "mix" I've ever seen lol any guess to what mixed with the dachsund?
Edit - He looks like a Dewey :) I think thats a great name for him!

OMG LAURA!! He is absolutely adorable!!!
Kiara says he syre is a looker. ;)
As for Vet stuff..
I'd ask what weight he 'should' be at. The vet should know approx. how much weight he should gain and what a healthy level for him to be at.
We use Heartguard on our dogs for heartworm, so far so good.
As far as fleas and ticks - we us the natural rememdy.
We bought Tea Tree oil and put it in their shampoo. They get baths weekly... and the tea tree oil works completely fine as long as you have no fleas in the yard or house to begin with. It's a lot less expensive then the chemical stuff, and it's completely natural.
Oh gosh he's so adorable. We need more pictures!

He is so cute. You'll get him fattened up in no time. I still can't believe you got a dog! Woo hoo!

He really is sweet. Yeah he does look thin, but now that he has a happy home I am sure that will change. He really is cute. After reading your posts about him and your questions, I cannot help but smile. Lucky little boy he sure is going to have a good home. (I sure hope the kitties don't mind.)

Welcome Home, Dewey!! You are so adorable. :D Congratulations on your new pupper! he certainly couldn't have found a better home. :)

He is soooo cute!! I love the name Dewey. We use heartguard for our dogs too.
As for the flea and tick treatment we use frontline. It works great! I too use a tree tea oil shampoo. We have a major tick problem here and have to keep them on frontline.

He is so cute. And he has long legs too. :) More pictures!! And say hi for me and Gigi. :)

lol I saw the top picture and thought "thats not thin, looks exactly like Happy" lol then I saw the side picture, yup definatly need to gain a few pound, just make sure he does not gain too much he appears to have a very narrow frame and slender legs so I doubt he would be able to properly support to much extra weight lol just judge by his ribs not by his waistline as he appears to have the same typ of build as Happy, so the waist should always be very prominent just make sure the rubs are not lol he is so cute! good luck with him!

WhattaCutie! He looks like a miniature Dobie. Congrats Uabassoon!

Awww, you weren't kidding about his long legs :) :) Its a Doxie on stilts! Hehe, how CUUUUUTE! I think Dewey is an adorable name!
I'd ask the vet to look at his teeth and give you an opinion on his age (just to see if it is consistent with what the Humane Society told you - never hurts to get two opinions). Not that it really matters, but it might be helpful to know.
Frontline seems to be the best flea/tick prevention. I wish I could use a natural remedy like Kay, but the flea and tick problem is so bad here in Texas that my dogs would probably pick up fleas the second they went off Frontline. I'm not sure how bad the problem is in Arizona though. If he's going to be basically indoors except on walks, your vet might suggest Sentinel. That takes care of fleas AND is heartworm prevention (as well as hookworm and roundworm). I used to use Sentinel on my dogs, but since we go to the dog parks a lot, my vet suggested we switch to a combination of Frontline and Interceptor (for heartworm).
Just stay away from over-the-counter flea and heartworm stuff. It's all either really bad or doesn't work.... or both.

Well isn't he a cutie pie...I see why he just had to come home with you!
Looks like he does need a little fattening up, but I'm sure you'll have that done in no time;)
Welcome Home Dewey!!!
