Surgery went fine, and Sam will be back in her ICU room shortly.
The surgeon was able to finish most of the grafting,
and he said what he did on Saturday looked fine today.
It will take another 10-14 days to see how all the grafting takes.
They will bring her down to the OR again on Thursday for dressing changes. The surgeon said he will likely have little things to clean up along the way.
Otherwise, her vitals remain stable,
though one of the cultures the pulmonary team took the other day
showed some lung infection, so they are treating that.
The goal is to start weaning her off the ventilator,
and letting her do more on her own, though they can't really do that
until she stays out of the OR for a while.
So now we give her a couple days to rest, and see how things go.
Thanks,
Jessica

I spent my first night at home last night, which was weird,
but I slept well, and I suppose it did me good
to get away for a while. I know she's in great hands here.
She had a good night, and looks very nice after a shampoo and
new pigtails--complete w/a little dress and matching hair accessories.
She's far less "puffy" today;
they gave her lots of fluids yesterday during surgery,
but she's getting back down to normal now.
No big plans today, and as far as I know, just a dressing change for tomorrow.
Thanks, as always, for the continued prayers.
Jessica

Part of getting better and feeling better is looking better, and we are glad Sammy is looking more like herself, and that you got a good night's rest.

How horrid... I'm so glad to hear that she is doing better! I'll be sure to keep praying for little Sam... I hope everything turns out good in the end.
Samantha is still in my thoughts and prayers, I pray for the day you'll be bringing her home!
So glad to hear she continues to do as well as can be expected. That's one little fighter you've got there Jessica.
Keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers. I just know she will be well enough to come home real soon.
I'm so glad to hear that Sammy is doing better. Lots of prayers and postive thoughts are still being sent your way.:)
That's a nice picture now you gave us of Samantha with her little pigtails;) (BTW In Germany you call them rattie tails;) ).
I am so glad she's doing fine after her surgery and am glad you had a little time for yourself- re-charging the batteries a little.

The dressing change went fine, and Sam will be back upstairs shortly.
The surgeon said he didn't encounter any problems, and
the grafts he's done so far are taking.
Another dressing change is scheduled for Saturday;
the doctor needs to do some more grafting as well,
but wants to give Sam a rest, so we're not sure when that will happen.
She's still fighting a lung infection;
it's hard to get rid of while she's intubated.
Other than that, we're in the usual wait-and-see mode, and,
as always, hoping and praying for the best.
Jessica

Prayers that the lung infection clears up quickly!!

They've gone down a little on Sam's sedation,
so she does open her eyes from time to time.
They are also discussing having a catheter put in on Monday,
which will be an easier way to deal w/dialysis.
Other than that, she's still scheduled for a dressing change tomorrow,
and another one on Monday.
Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers.
Jessica

Prayers Continue!!
We'll keeping praying things will continue to improve. Please keep us updated.

My God, what a strong little girl she is. She just has to feel all the positive vibes and prayers going out to her at this time. This little community never ceases to amaze me. Here we are, people from all over the world, all walks of life, coming together to pray for this precious life that we've never met. It makes me so proud to be part of Pet Talk.

Sam's dressing change went fine;
she was back in her room by 8:00 am --
it was an early morning for the plastic surgery team.
He plans on another dressing change Monday or Tuesday.
He said @85% of the grafting has "taken";
he knew he'd have a little to redo, and
then some small spots to take care of.
Her right hand has fared better than her left,
and the surgeon feels she will have a functional right hand;
she lost some fingers on the left, though.
All in all, from a plastics standpoint, things are looking okay.
Her vitals remain stable, and she is resting comfortably right now.
Thanks,
Jessica

Let's round up some more Prayers for Sammy, Jessica, and Rob!
Thanks for the update Phred. That's very encouraging news. Still sending out daily prayers to this little miracle child.
I'm keeping little Jessica in my thoughts and sending lots of positive vibes. Get well, sweetheart! :)
I think about this child and I find myself just staring out into space, not focused on anything in particular.
Many heartfelt prayers are being said for this precious little girl and her parents.
And again: Sammy our thoughts are with you. Daily. Hourly......
Together we'll pull through.:)
Poor baby. I am thinking of her everyday, hoping she'll heal sooner.
Sweet family...I know I've missed alot being gone last week.
I'll continue the prayers for you all.
Prayers are still going strong for Samantha and family.
Prayers are continuing here for sweet Samantha and her family.
I just finished reading all the updates I missed while I was away this past week. So glad to hear things are slowly improving. I smiled when I read about Sammy's pigtails. How cute. I continue to pray for her every single day. She is such a miracle child. Hang in there little Sammy, and keep getting better! Kisses to you, and hugs to your mommy, Auntie Johanna, and to the rest of your family too!
This morning's update from the CarePages:
23 June 06, 2005 at 10:12 AM EDT
Sam had some difficulties over the weekend, but as to the exact cause, nobody's sure. She spiked a temp a couple of times, but they were able to bring it down quickly; she also had some sort of respiratory thing going on--she was breathing quite heavily for some reason. The doctors checked around, looking for the usual causes, but found nothing different/unusual...it's quite puzzling. A new infection setting in is always a possibility--and a fear--but she's on several strong antibiotics. Her vitals otherwise are stable enough. They used paralysis to stop her labored breathing, and to just let the vent do it for her, and that seemed to help, and they'll take her off the paralyzing today, and see how she does. She will have a dressing change either today or tomorrow; at this point, the plastics team thinks it's too early to insert the catheter for dialysis--they want to insert one in the abdomen, but the skin there isn't healed enough, so they will likely have to wait. She had some production on her own over the weekend, but not much since, so we don't know the full story on that. These ups and downs are expected along the way; Sam's journey will be a lengthy one. It has been one month today; it feels like a year. It's a miracle she's made it to this point, so please keep praying for the miracle to continue.
Thanks,
Jessica
Of course, Sammy and her family are still in our prayers! Kisses to her from us!
More gentle hugs for Sammy.
Prayers for the whole family still on going. I will repeat my self and say , God chose a wonderful family for this little one and she is one heck of a fighter.
