Sam is still stable, and had no crises during the night;
the plastic surgeon was in this morning, and said that,
metabolically, she was doing better.
The second surgery is planned for @1:00 pm tomorrow.
They took care of about 90% yesterday, and he said
he has the remaining 10% to finish up, plus cleaning up a bit,
closing things up, etc. Skin grafting will be the next phase.
Sam looks comfortable enough, and
I pray that she's sleeping peacefully;
I think she can feel all the prayers and love
wrapped snugly around her.
Jessica

Latest update from the Carepages:
May 26, 2005 at 03:40 PM EDT
The second surgery went fine; Sam remained stable, and should be back up in ICU shortly. The 3rd operation will be Saturday; the doctor will look again, clean up anything necessary, close up, and begin to think about grafting--he wants to begin by using skin from her back, one place she still has usable skin. The top of her head will be the second option, but he assures us the hair will grow back. Another surgery will likely follow on Tuesday. Thanks, as always, for all the warm thoughts; she's a little trooper, and is hanging in there the best she can.

Sounds hopeful and good, how's her metabolism doing? Is she still on dialysis?
Unbelievable what that little baby has to go through. :(

Sam remains stable, and we anxiously await surgery #3 tomorrow.
At this point, the doctors involved are happy w/the progress she's making.
I will have Johanna post tomorrow after surgery, and over the long weekend as well, as I won't have Internet access during that time.
Thanks for your continued prayers!
Jessica

This is Johanna, posting on behalf of Jessica and Rob:
I just spoke with Jessica, and Sam has come through one more surgery. This time, there was a fair amount of skin grafting done. The surgeon will do more of this on Tuesday evening in Sam's fourth surgery. The pulmonary people are in with Sam right now. There seems to be a possibility that Sam has a collapsed, or partially collapsed lung. One lung seems to be more troublesome than the other- maybe a mucus plug, Jessica said. This seems to be considered within the realm of 'normal' for someone in Sam's condition. I don't think on the grand scheme of things that this is a significant issue (but, surely one that is still worrisome). On the positive side, Sam produced some urine today! This means positive things for the return of the kidney function. Probably too soon to speak to this, but, positive nonetheless. Prayers continued, please! I will update again when Jessica or Rob indicates.

Prayers for Sammy!
I just read the latest update and this little angel is quite the fighter isn't she? This precious life has had such a difficult start; it can only mean that when she gets through this, she'll live a long and happy life. We've got to keep the faith. Hang in there Sammy! You've got continuing prayers happening from all over the world and your Auntie Johanna can confirm that Pet Talk Prayers do work miracles.
I look forward to the day, in the near future, when we can see pictures of you safe at home in your little bed.
Sammy for sure is a fighter and we will take all our concentration to help her:)
More prayers for Sammy!
I just read the latest update and I'm so glad to hear that Samantha is such a fighter and doing so well. I hope nothing comes of the collapsed lung and she gets over yet another hurdle.
Thinking of you all every day and saying many prayers.
The latest update on Sammy's Care Page;
This is Johanna, posting on behalf of Jessica and Rob:
Jessica just called, and reported that Sam has had a pretty uneventful day. The pulmonary people x-rayed the lungs again, and said they looked better today then they did yesterday. The doctor said, "I wish I could take credit for this, but, I think Sam is beginning to heal herself" or something to that effect. Jessica said that they are removing one chest tube today, and the other one tomorrow. That is a step in the right direction. Sam opened her eyes last night, when Jessica was asleep. Jessica asked how she was, and the nurse thought that Sam looked 'scared'. Jessica will be asking that the night nurses wake her from now on, so that she might be there when Sam opens her eyes again.
The road will be long, no doubt about it. I just want to rejoice for the teeny tiny signs of progress that Sam is making. Jessica and Rob are without a computer until Tuesday, and Sam will have her surgery in the evening. So, the next post will possibly be from me again. Keep Sam, Jessica and Rob tightly in your hearts and prayers!
Johanna
A tiny progress is better than a setback.
Keep fighting sweetheart and remember we are all pulling for you.
Prayers and positive thoughts still on the way.
hi there again, little brave one!
sorry I couldn't get to post my heavy thoughts of/for you as soon as I could but here I am! and someone has been updating me about you, your well-surgeries, thank god!
wow, yep, what a marvelous little trooper! I would never imagine anyone, especially this little child could go through so many heartbreaking moments and is at least recovering a little bit! way to go, sammy!!
my heart cries when "her eyes open...", isn't that great? always a joyful moment at the hospital! :) you all will be in my thoughts, forever, really! and continue praying..
many comfort hugs delivered!!
me..
Thinking of you every day Samantha.
Johanna, How are Sam's arms? I know they were worried for them as well as the legs. And when the update said that the only "good" skin for grafts could come from the back or head I wondered how badly her arms were being effected.
Keep on fightin' little girl. Gentle {hugs} to you and your family.
Still thinking about her, and praying for her. I hope she is continuing in her small steps towards healing.
