A giraffe is on RIGHT NOW!!
Oooh I see the giraffe!!!
Wheee!!!! I see a giraffe! :D
Water buffalo at the watering hole at 3am their time. There were three of them and one went for a long soak in the water. He had a hard time getting out, thrashing and grunting, getting part way out and sliding back in again. They made a great deal of noise, snorting at each other, drinking and splashing. I couldn't post here while it was happening because I could only tear myself away long enough to check on the Africam forum - that's where I learned they were Cape Buffalo. I kept thinking that's what they looked like, but it's very hard to see details of animals at night and I didn't know they moved around at night.
The Africam forum is wonderful with many knowledgeable people. They post the names of all the birds calling, and the animal sounds when you can't see them.
I'm getting quite an education through PT!
I missed that - what a shame work keeps me away from things I love!
I found I had to turn the sound down or off because after a while I had ringing in my ears from the insect and bird sounds. I was "hearing" it long after I had shut down the computer.:D
Their forum is filled with information. I haven't joined but they do share a huge wealth of knowledge which is so helpful in enjoying and understanding everything that you are seeing.
I keep the sound turned down very low also but I'm also aware from reading the posts on the forum that I'm missing a number of animal calls. Of course, the buffalo made so much noise I had to turn it down! They mentioned that they hadn't seen buffalo since Christmas Eve so I'm thrilled that I checked in just at the right time. There was a hyena also - which I thought was an animal similar to a large weasel. :D The way it ran forward with it's belly low, it's long body, and the whiteness of it's fur didn't indicate hyena to me.
Omg Omg Giraffe Giraffe!!!!
Lions drinking.
I missed them! Drat!! :(
It was really frustrating. By the time I checked into the forum that they really were lions, zoomed in here to sound the alert, they had finished drinking (two lionesses) and were walking away. Because the cam operator is away, we kept hearing their noises but could only see the empty watering hole. Now we are wondering if these were the lions that tried to take down the mother giraffe that we saw injured a few days ago.
Edited to add: Here is the link to the video of the lions:

And here are the three Cape Buffalo taking a drink & bath at 3am:

And the buffalo that didn't want to come out of the water (I thought he could't get out, he walllowed around bellowing for so long:

Bath Time for the Wildebeest.
Thanks for sharing those videos Lizzie! :)
There are three Cape Buffalo in the water hole, they've been there for hours apparently, just sitting in the water and cooling off.
Sorry... I called them Wildebeests.Quote:

Did you see the buffalo put on a little show for the tourists in the tram? One drove the other out of the water.
That must have happened while I was driving to work. pitc6 - Cape Buffalo are way more mean than Wildebeest/Gnu. So mean that they are one of the Big Five (the most fearsome animals to hunt). The three that we saw were old bulls who form their own group when they are driven out of the herd. Apparently their tempers get even meaner when they get old. I wouldn't even have known that I was watching buffalo last night if I hadn't gone into the Africam forum. If you go into the forum and to Watering Hole you can read ongoing chat from very knowledgeable people about what you are seeing or hearing. I didn't enjoy one picture on there that showed the remains of a buffalo that the lions took down over Christmas. Apparently they also took a baby and a young zebra which almost everyone found hard to watch. They think that the two lionesses we saw are scouts for a pride and that we will see more lions soon.
Lizzie thanks so much for posting this information. There is so much going on that it is difficult to take the time to read the Africam forum and keep up with this one. I really appreciate the information.
Even though it is a fact of life - it would be difficult to watch the kills.
Rhinos at the water hole. They've just moved away but you can still hear them clearly.
No large animals around the water hole - but there sure is something large growling in the background!
Apparently that's an angry/frightened baboon. I thought it sounded like a growl also. Someone just posted that the last time the baboons sounded such a stron alarm at night was when there were several lions around.
Oh I can't get enough of this!! For real!
I have it on all day long at work and have also sucked a co-worker into it too! If one of us spots something interesting we'll call each other and tell the other one. It's really pretty sad!! :o
Everyone else here at work thinks we're nuts!
Yeah... SO!!! :p
I just spent the past day looking at pictures members of the forum posted, and I'm trying to figure out how to take/save pictures... can someone help me?
:( it comes up all funny colours and blotchy for me - i cant make out whats what.
its working now and OMG BULL ELEPHANT!!!!!
They are zooming up on a baby buffalo now!
He's so cute!
It's very quiet at the waterhole right now. Just sitting here waiting for some action. That's how I spend my Saturday nights these days...... :o
still havent seen any animals! But the camera did foucus onto the lodge and i saw a guy cleaning a window LMAO
LMAO. Wow what a view!! Can anyone identify this type of animal? :p I think I keep on hearing screaming (human) in the background or is my ears decieving me again. :confused:Quote:

oh oh oh! Finally!...theres some wildebeest lying in the grass and grazing., they are huge  ..and theres a few antelope in the far background..how neat!
It's very hit or miss. Last night, for instance, the only action was about 5 seconds of an elephant walking past the water hole. The only reason I caught it was because I had the sound on and ran over to the computer when I heard loud crunching. The two previous nights we had Cape Buffalo bathing and then rhino, including a baby, followed by days of more rhino, buffalo, giraffes and elephants. Today seems pretty basic with gnu and impala. I enjoy it best when I have two sessions of Africam open at the same time, both at half screen. One shows me the cam and the other is in the forum where experts tell you what every sound means.
This is the handsome guy I saw yesterday! It was sooo neat, finally seeing an elephant, they are so massive. At first he was just eating, then he moved to the watering hole for a drink. He was showering himself, and having so much fun. I enjoyed veiwing it, and I got a decent pic for you all:

WOW!!! Thanks for the heads up Angie! :D
Nothing on right now.
I am dying to see a elephant. I wonder what time (my time) they normally come around.
Flatcoat....there's an elephant now......
I was up at that time and I missed it. Thanks Slick, I am mad at myself now!!
Don't worry - the elephants will be back!
The cam is down right now - sound only.:(
