I joined on 11/1/02 or thereabouts. I lurked for almost a year before that. I was checking out the site from work (the site was winding down and the company was willing to pay me to mostly surf the web...oh, and test a couple fluids now and then...) I joined after I was unemployed and needed a break from my job search.
