So basically the purpose of breeding wolfs and dogs is to make another breed for people to own?
?yes, but for those who are wolf and wolfdog oriented, not for wide spread distribution like some money hungry breeders are dong.
Or for companions? I am still a little confused. Which really isn't anything new. So to you whats the difference between companion and pet? Why do they make better companions than pets?
wolfdogs are not 'snuggly' ...huggie type animals.....they show thier affection through respect for you and playful actions. they dont retireve, the dont play with dog toys much, they are terrible travelers in a vehicle, but: they are 10 times smarter than the smartest dog. they keep maturing far after age 3. they learn by watching you. they can open doors, lift gate latches, you name it. they dont lay on your feet while watching tv or lay on the bed snuggling with you.....they are independent but want your "companionship" . thats a must. wolfdogs need another companion, a dog or another wolfdog...they are packing animals. problems arrise when a wolfdog is the single animal in a household. they get bored easily, they pace, and can become destructive...... they are also escape artists. ive seen a high mid content wolfdog scale a 12 foot chain link fence. home checks are critical, containment is a major factor.
The higher content wolfdogs are they more wary of people, and more "wild"? How does a person start raising wolfdogs? I mean how do they get involved with it?
Depends on how much time was spent socializing the high content wolfdogs. the majority of wolfdogs, except for the very low contents, are leary of strangers.... thats in thier genes...thanks to the years of persecution of the wolf by man across the entire world. you start raising them when you feel you have the proper knowledge and exsperience to do so. you learn that from the net and from being around other wolfdog owners. i started in 1983, there was no internet... i spent alot of years with wolves and wolfdogs before I got my first. Im not trying to scare anyone off here, im just saying that education is the key to sucess. its a lifetime commitment. they dont make good companions (the mids and highs) to second owners unless they are very very socialized.
So do you plan to breed yours? If so do you have to go through a rigerous testing before you can? And when people breed her do they breed her to another wolf dog or a dog or wolf.
i already answered this one. but breeding is done depending on content wanted. remember, the "wolf" will bring the content up..... yes ..thats done sometimes......but most of the time...the bloodline keeps getting more "dog" in it. in most states, you need a USDA wildlife permit to own a pure wolf.
There are a ton of wolfdog info sites out there on the net. very good ones..... put "wolfdogs" in a Google search...... you will be busy for hours :D ;)

:) Wow your info on the breeding of the wolves is fascinating. I enjoy learning more about how different breed's came about. I respect your work in helping these wonderful animals. They are quite beautiful and I do agree, people sometimes don't know what they are getting into when they adopt an animal. They don't do any homework on the breed and just expect the dog or cat for that matter to automatically know not to chew or claw on things. It is rather frustrating. Like anything else educating your self before adopting is the key in having a successful relationship with your pet.
