I have to say that the Cairn Terrier is my favorite too. We have one and his name is Sammy. He is a high energy dog, with lots of personality. We (my boyfriend and I) love him dearly. However, we feel he is getting lonely and want to get another dog. Do you reccomend getting another Cairn or a different breed?
PS.. I am a newby here.
Murph was my first Cairn and I got another Cairn, when he was 6 mos old, Maddie. As puppies, they got along pretty well, played together and everything. As they matured though, Maddie got very dominant with Murph and he wasn't exactly gung ho to back down, so they had many lil' squabbles. As Maddie became a senior and got more cranky, they had more frequent lil' fights, but as bad as they sounded sometimes, they never escalated past some hair yanking.
When they were both around 11, I got a Smooth Collie, Oz. He was perfect for both of them. He and Murph loved to play with each other and he and Maddie loved to nap with each other. Oz has a very non-challenging personality, so it was real easy for him to fit in with both of them. I also felt he was big enough so that they couldn't hurt him, but with that gentle personality, he wouldn't try to hurt them either. I was really more worried about the Cairns hurting the other dog vs the other way around, so I wouldn't have even considered a dog smaller then them. I probably will never have 2 terriers at once again either, but I know a lot of Cairn folks that do. I just have decided that Collies and a terrier make a great melding of personalities.
