Do you know what their policy is on 'stray holds'? Depending on the shelter, some range anywhere from 3 days to 10 where it's required they hold the pet in case an owner shows up. I wonder if this is why they're giving you the run around? As far as names go (I do like the name Champ too) all three of our dogs come running when you say one name. They do know their own names, but think it may be treats time, so they don't want to miss out lol! Can't wait to hear good news on the pup! (Woody?)
Oh the suspense of waiting for today's post.
I just got back from the SPCA, it's not exactly what I was hoping for but I guess it'll have to do: My application was approved. He is scheduled for his neutering next wednesday so I can take him home next thursday. It's longer than I would have liked but at least now I know! There is no way that I can foster him or anything, all due to his not being neutered.
Bud, Tash and I got to take him out for a long walk today!! It was great, though he needs some work on his leash manners! The three of them got along fantastic again and he seemed really excited just to get out of there for awhile.
Bud and Tash are absolutely exhausted now as I decided to walk them there. The round trip, including our walk with Grissom (that's what they named him at the SPCA but it's not gonna last!) took us 3 1/2 hours!
Now that I know I can, I think I will be down walking him a few times before I can take him home. It's probably even better as Bud and Tash get to know him on "nuetral ground" first before he comes home.
So I guess everything has worked out and all I can do is wait! Thanks once again everyone, you've been great!!

Can you get him if you have your vet make your neuter appointment and call them to say hes ready to do it? Sounds like they have only one very over worked vet. But you would think to free up space they would move faster.
Tip for next time you rescue call and give the tag # or take a picture in not the poor animal until youhave exshusted all other avenues.

Corinna: That's actually not a bad idea, I think I'll check into it but it's likely too late now as my vet isn't open tomorrow so by the time I get ahold of him Monday, unless he can get him in right away, it's likely not worth it as I am, in a round-about way already paying for the neutering in the adoption fee. If it cost me an extra hundred bucks to get him a week early, it might be worth it but not for just a day or two.
C&S: I should be able to get there most days, but likely not every day. You're right, it'll be good for him trusting me and hopefully bonding with Bud and Tash (and vice versa) and it's just a nice break for him. He was so cute today, he kept stopping in front of me and jumping up on me (not necessarily good behaviour but I'll deal with that when the time comes) and just sniffing my face, like he was trying to memorize it!
Maybe not the best news in the world (since he didn't get to comehome yet), but great news nonetheless!!! Yeah for Woody!!!

This brings me to one of my first questions (I have a few but I'm gonna try to spread 'em out a little bit rather than ask 'em all at once!!): I have a large crate and nice fluffy, freshly-washed blanket for him. Buddy and Tasha have always just shared the same bowl and have food down all the time. I have dog-sat many dogs in my house and the only problem ever is that Tash gets upset if the other dog heads into her food bowl (though she could care less when Bud does). Ultimately I would like for them all to share food that will be there 24/7 (it's in a little holder thingy with two bowls, right now I only keep one full but I could fill both). Do you guys think I should give him a seperate bowl in a separate area and then try to slowly move it closer, or should I just let him at it and try to monitor it to make sure Tash is not trying to stop him from eating? I don't think it's fair at this point to all of a sudden put Bud and Tash on scheduled meals after ten years of food having always been there.Quote:

I'll slip in one more question while I'm at it. Bud and Tash get 1 hour a day of off-leash walking and more often than not another short on-leash walk. Obviously, the new pup will not be off-leash until he has some training with me and I know I can trust him. Should I take him and keep him on leash (which seems kind of mean while Bud and Tash run around freely), or leave him at home (which might be a good chance for him to "check out the place" without anyone else around? Or, a little of both?
By the way C&S, no great names came to mind while walking him. If I had to name him based on todays walk it would likey be "wingnut" or "yoyo" (he was back and forth to the end of that leash just like a yoyo!), but neither of those seem all that appealing to me!

if you want to leave food down all the time,first make sure that He doesn't eat so much he gets sick....you can get those containers that let food out a little at a time,and just put in a different area than Buddy and Tasha...then he'll have His space and they have theirs....

also, to make You and He feel better...when you let the other 2 run.....
You can go to a Feed,Tack Store and get a 20,25 or 30 ft. longe line....it is used to exercise horses....it is thick nylon....with snap on one end...for collar....and loop on other end for you to hold onto.....he can have a Nice Romp with this,and he won't be loose....In the U.S. they cost about $10.00....
I use this on Joey all the time,so he can get some of his "Bucks" out...and get tired too!!! he comes right home and sleeps!!!!
They Really are a Great Tool...I got All of my kids Fully Grown...So I Never have them off leash.....They came with Habits....I know that they would All be good ....Till a Bunny or Squirrel ran by...then they'd be Gone!!!

What I have found with dogs that have been in shelters or "on their own" is that they have not had as much to eat or as often as they like so they tend to eat everything in sight until they get used to the idea that food will always be there on a regular basis. So yes I would get a separate bowl right now and try to get him used to the idea of eating only from that bowl now. As he gets used to you and your fur-kids and they get used to him, you might gradually be able to use the one bowl. I have 6 bowls down and usually there is food in them. They eat when they want and aren't too particular about who is eating out of what bowl. We did have to revise that a bit when Snoopy started on phenabarbitol for his seizures because it made him hungry all the time and he really put on some weight. We also have 3 water bowls down.
This is very exciting! Can't wait til you get "Woody" home and we can start hearing stories about his adjustment to your home.
Oh, and some pet stores carry what they call long lines that are I think 50 feet so you can have them run well ahead of you. Might be something to see if you store has too.

Get the SOFT, Loosly Braided style rope - not the "stiff" clothes-line
type (soft is easier on you hands!)
Tie the Snap on His End, and a loop on Your End -
and you're All Set to go <SNAG> sum Stuff in the Great Outdoors!

Okay, I'm going to look at it from another angle. *Woody* probably isn't housebroken, right? So we got that hurdle to deal with too. Feeding *at will* might make housebreaking an extra challenge. I don't know how much adjusting it would take for your two to adapt to feedings twice a day. No, maybe not fair but theoretically not the worst of things that can happen to them. That way you can supervise the eating experience to make sure no one gets what someone else is suppose to have, etc. etc. I really do worry about the Wood Man eating himself sick. My Tucker (once a stray) would do that to this day and he has been well fed for over 5 years.
I too used the 20, 30, and 50 foot lines to let Hannah run BF (before fence). Actually I let it drag on the ground and used the *step to stop* method. I was a bit more agile 9 years ago. Don't know if I could do it now. Be aware that one can get a nasty (and infected) rope burn should dog whip around your legs and you don't jump out of the way fast enough. Hey, you're young! There is always the retractible leash which would allow a bit of leeway for Woody.
While walking Bud and Tash today I was racking my brain for a good name and I came up with "Docker", here's why:
I made an agreement with myself that in order to adopt this dog, I had to quit smoking (today is day two!), something I've been putting off for some time, so in a way, he well be saving me as much as I'm saving him.
Anyway, Docker is a shortened version of a good friends last name (Rodocker) whose wife recently passed away from lung cancer directly related to smoking.
Thinking along that theme, I started to think of other people who have died from smoking and the only other one I came up with and liked was Spencer (after Spencer Tracy) but I think I still like Docker better; it's not a bad dog name and it has meaning.
First of all, congrats on quitting smoking. I've heard it can be pretty hard to do.
Second, I think Docker is a cute name, and it has a personal meaning to you, so that makes it even better. :D

*Docker* will work well with your other dogs names. I was a bit concerned that Woody sounded a bit to close to Buddy. The *Doc* nickname also implies the *saving you* aspect, doesn't it?
Having also lost a good friend to lung cancer many years ago, I couldn't be more pleased to hear of your resolve to quit smoking. This thread is turning out to be a real place to find happy news.
I know both raising Docker and quitting smoking will have many challenges. Even though I don't know you personally, I want to say how proud I am of what you have set out to do.
Way to go Schteve, your patience and persistance worked. Docker is definately a good name. How about Nicorete? ;)

And I'm probably a big meanie, but if he sat down I would probably just keep walking. Depends on the individual dog and the situation though.
Once at home I would take him out by himself for training sessions and practice walking on a loose lead. My favorite exercise for this is to start walking and the minute the leash begins to get tight turn and walk in a different direction. You can give a verbal cue like "oops" or "this way" etc so that he begins to tune itno your voice. Pretty soon he will learn that you are a very weird person with unpredictable walking patterns and he'll begin to keep a closer eye on you. You may look a little silly constantly changing directions at first, but it's worth it in the end.
I've used that exercise to train friend's and family's dogs for informal heeling, as well as my own for formal heeling.
I hope I explained that alright. :)

have you ever heard of a 'gentle leader"? (another brand is called a 'Halti') instead of attaching the leash to his collar - he wears a very light 'head harness' ( to the uninformed, it looks like a muzzle - but it's not) and the leash is attached right below his chin.
what this does, in effect, is allow you to walk and 'direct' him by his nose and head, and NOT his neck - like a halter on a horse.
A dog can pull very easily against a leash around his sturdy neck and chest muscles & with 4 paws on the ground - but with the leash attached by his NOSE - he doesn't have as much leverage, and that keeps YOU in charge.
you direct where his head goes, and his body is bound to follow!
(it's much easier on your poor arms, shoulders and back, too)
put the gentle leader on and also use the 'weird walking' trick suggested above, and it will work quicker than with a regular collar and leash!

and the pain after-effects of the surgery itself...
He MAY be either still "groggy" or in some amount of "pain" or
discomfort even a day after the surgery! :(
I would *strongly* suggest that his Trip HOME be made
by "motor vehicle" and NOT Dawggie-Power!
Even 24 hours after the surgery, SOME dogs are still "groggy"
and just want to be left alone and allowed to sleep.
There's going to be some "stress" on ALL Three Pups when
they all realise :eek: the New Walkin Buddie Guy
is Comin IN OUR Howze!!!
*I* might suggest you pick him up and RIDE him home "alone"...
Then possibly "tie" him up to the car or a handy tree or fence -
OUTSIDE the house...
Then leash and bring Buddy & Tash OUT for a lil
"meet & greet" on more neutral territory.
THEN you can try walkin IN the howze and just say
"OMG! *Look* who just came *in* "with us", guyz!" :D

I do agree with Phred...after surgery,it might be too long of a walk...especially if he Pulls....and has sutures in.....
what I did when I brought home new dog(S) ....I turned mine out in their yard....while new dog waits in car....then I leash walked them through the house...(So they don't Mark)...
Then like Phred said....I walked him out to the yard...like look, guys...new guy visiting....they played and romped....then 1/2 hour later...I brought them ALL in the house....Look guys...New Visitor is Staying!!! ;)

Seeing as this procedure is being done through the shelter and how lacking they have been in understanding, I don't suppose there is any way to check up on Docker this afternoon. Good for you taking Thursday and Friday off. That will be so helpful in getting things off to the right start.

Now that you got me thinking about it, I almost wonder if it wouldn't be better to leave him there for one more day as kind of a recovery day rather than bringing him home possibly groggy, sore and surely not in the best of humour. I'd rather not wait another day as I'm anxious to get him home, but it might be for the best??
