White elephant is from an old story in India-the emperor was given a white elephant as a gift;but because it was white the tigers could see it and attack it. The emperor had to build a special pen for it and hire men to watch it-the elephant was costing him a fortune so he was stuck with it-it was useless to the emperor-and that's how the term white elephant came to be.
