Sammy's "Summer Report" = All is Well!
:)
Saturday, September 22, 2007 at 01:51 PM EDT
Another summer gone...hard to believe.
Sam's doing well, and is now in Pre-K at Precious Resources.
She continues to make progress on her legs, and PT is going well.
She's also made tons of progress w/toilet-training, and wears "big girl panties" much of the time. She's wearing new bifocals now, and her last 2 kidney checks have shown no major changes; she returns to Children's in December.
She had an MRI in July to check for usable veins for any future surgery needs, and it seems there's plenty of access, so that's good.
She visited both Shriner's hospitals over the summer.
They were pleased w/her progress in Lexington, and she'll return in 6 mos.; she doesn't return to plastics clinic in Cincy for a year, so things look good there. She did well at the dentist this last visit (she threw a fit 6 mos. earlier).
She had a GREAT time on her first vacation ever in Cape May, NJ; see the gallery for pics. It was so nice to finally get away. Sam's now looking forward to the county fair next week, and to Halloween next month as well...she says she wants to be a chicken again, which would make the 3rd year running. Good thing the costume still fits!
As always, thanks for keeping Sam in your thoughts.

Sammy's Christmas UppieDate >>>
Monday, December 10, 2007 at 08:49 PM EST
Happy Holidays!
It's hard to believe it's that time of year again. Sam's doing well, and looking forward to Christmas. She had another fun Halloween, and enjoyed the county fair again; Thanksgiving was also fun. She continues to do well in school and in therapy, and had a speaking role in the Christmas pageant this year--and she walked on stage! Words can't describe how it felt to see her walk up with all her classmates; we were reminded yet again of how lucky we are to have Karen & Dave & the staff at Precious Resources in Sam's life--they play a huge role in her progress. Sam's therapist Kate agrees!
Sam's check-up at Children's again showed no major changes, and her doctor was pleased. We're going back & forth w/the potty training, but in light of all Sam's other progress, we really can't complain. Sam's in her own room now, and doing well w/that...and I only peek in on her once (or twice) a night, so I'm doing okay w/it, too.
One of her favorite things is typing on the computer, and she's pestering me to type right now, so here she goes: nvnbvhbvhbhbvbbvhbhbhbvbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbccvvcvcv cvgvvgvgvgvfg fgfyttdf
Enjoy the new pics in the gallery;
Merry Christmas to everyone, and thank you, as always, for keeping Sam in your thoughts.
Jessica
PS in a few days it will be exactly 3 years since Sam was handed to me!

Happy Spring...well, maybe.
Sam's been doing well since the last update.
Her renal labs continue to be the same, and between preK and PT,
she managed to find time to celebrate her 5th birthday last month--so hard to believe!
We went to clinic in Lexington in February, and they confirmed what several of us had suspected-
-she'd outgrown her legs! We went down for casting shortly after that, and we just returned
from a week-long stay with Sam's new legs, which bend at the knee.
No more starter legs for Sam! Of course, it's a whole new ballgame, and
will be a major transition--Kate will be busy w/her in therapy. The prosthetist did put
what they call a "spring assist" in the knee joints, so they will straighten and lock a little on their own,
until she gets used to them and has better control. I was very proud of how hard she worked in Lexington,
and what a big girl she's getting to be.
Needless to say, she charmed everyone she met!
In less exciting news, the dentist gave Sam her first fillings...but Sam was brave,
and we got through it!
Enjoy some new pics in the gallery, and
keep Sam in your thoughts as she begins this new phase.
Thanks,
Jessica
Sam's sixth birthday is coming up - March 1st!
I think about this child nearly every day. She is such a trooper.
I hope she is doing nicely - I am sure she is....
Has anyone heard anything? I bet she is getting to be quite the young lady!

Happy Autumn!

Hard to believe it's been 6 months!
Sam's doing well, and had a great summer, between horseback riding, playing in her pool
and sandbox, and working hard in therapy on her new legs. She's also having fun at school,
and enjoying her 2nd year of PreK. She spends time on her legs every day,
and is getting around really well.
Her 2nd session w/the horses starts up in a couple of weeks; she loves it,
and is constantly practicing her horse commands on me..."whoa" and "walk."
She's been to Children's a couple times, and on our next visit in December,
her nephrologist will do a more detailed test (it's been done once before)
to get a more accurate look at her renal function. Her labs last month showed some changes,
though not extreme ones, so we'll see.
Overall, she's feeling great and looking forward to Halloween next week.
Hope everyone enjoyed the summer--time to gear up for the holiday season now!
Thanks,
Jessica

From Phred:
Sorry I missed this one - I forgot to change my email address with Care Pages
and missed the update alert.
Not sure why all the previous photo snappies have gone missing.
I suspect new PetTalk folks don't know about this child and her wonderful parents!
I once printed the thread (while at work, with a laser printer) and read it from post #1 .... probably 20 some pages worth. It is hard to believe this child and her family made this journey and had a rather positive outcome.
I remember crying while reading some of the earlier posts about the operations and day-to-day troubles. Gosh.
And we complain about little things.... You are right Slick, it is good to be reminded how fortunate many of us are....and life has been good to us, all things considered.
Oh, to be six again.
