That's interesting -- I've heard that some dogs are particularly competitive and may bite another dog and that that is the main reason for the muzzles. Although I have only seen one lure chasing event in "real life" and no fights broke out, and the dogs never even wore muzzles.

i havent had the pleasure to meet on in person.
but would love to have one day. :D i seem to have taken a real likeing to dog breeds with funky body structures. :D

If a hound is particularly disruptive during a race s/he will get what's called an 'interference line'. If s/he get's 3 of these lines, it is not permitted to race.. ANYWHERE and is put into adoption.
It's not always a sign of aggression either. Some hounds are just downright playful and goofy.. and have no real interest in racing. so when they are out running and there are others out there with them, they might see that as an opportunity to 'play'.
Go to a dogpark (as I'm sure you have)... and see how dogs of all different breeds interact with one another... they snap at, nip at, lunge at each other and the VAST majority of the time there's no harm done.

Greyhounds are like any other dog... just faster :cool: They all have their own distinct personalities. Some get along just fine with other pets... cats, rats, ferrats, small dogs, big dogs... whatever.
Some, too cannot be left alone with other pets...If someone is going to adopt, it's the responsibility of the adoption representative to take into account the prospective adopters living situation and find a hound that is best suited for him/her.
I too, hope you wouldn't stop posting these pictures.
I thought of a question, do they run around the track once once a year? or is there any kind of tournament?

Oh no.. they run quite often. A healthy hound will run his/her ace every 3-4 days.
Each track wil hold a series of "Stakes Races" throughout the racing season. The stakes races are for big money and are usually run over the course of 2-3 weeks.
Take my hound for instance, she ran 53 races. Which isn't a whole lot, but I know of others who have raced well over 150 times and a rare few over 200. f course, to race that many times, the hound has to be an exceptional runner.

Greyhounds, just like all dogs and people, have varying temperaments. Before ex-racers are adopted out, they are tested with cats (to check if they're cat-safe), small dogs (to see if they're small dog-safe), small rodents and birds (to see if they're small animal-safe), AKA their prey drive. However, these tests are very general and, imo, artificial. Therefore, a "cat friendly'' Grey at the adoption group might turn anti-Kitty at the adopter's house. So, just as it's the adoption representative's responsibility to match the right Grey with the right home, it's also the new owner's responsibility to ensure the safety of all household pets.
But yes, many Greyhounds share their homes with multiple dogs of all sizes, multiple cats, and a wide array of small animals. For what it's worth, I own a Greyhound, a Pekingese, four budgies, and one cockatiel.

I don't know if you're referring to me, but, just in case you are. I never said that people shouldn't say a thing, and avoid the subject. I just think that there's a time and place for everything. I didn't think a thread about a proud greyhound owner posting photos of a sport he loves was appropriate grounds for debating the subject of the greyhound racing. It would be just as uncalled for if someone started bashing sled dog racing when photos of huskies pulling was posted. I'm all for voicing opinions, in a tactful way. And, I'm not saying that you did it untactfully. I just didn't think that this was the appropriate thread for that.Quote:

And, GreyhoundDaddy, I hope I haven't permanently offended you. I was just saddened by your initial reaction, because these kinds of things usually go really sour really quickly. I'm so glad that the thread has been brought back to being a good one, though. People will have the opportunity again to learn another viewpoint, and, that's what I was afraid was lost.
I hope you understand where I was coming from. I do understand a knee jerk reaction when you are passionate about something that the general public has the opposite opinion on. I can totally see how that would be frustrating and would get really old. I'm sure you are tired of hearing about it, as I know I would be. I'm glad that the thread has gone this way. I still think the photos are beautiful. :)

I'd be quite as upset as greyhounddaddy was but if I see a concern post where someone would like to make a post...without judging and name callings, I don't think that's wrong as long as things are being said nicely.

I just love the pictures its like watching the horses race the muscles working as they should . It's amazing how God could have created such beauty, all athletes human and animal just give me shivers watching them .

Those are beautiful dogs. Look at those muscles. I too at one time did not like the idea of racing. I guess it was the bad rap the owners would get after the dogs was done racing. I am very thankful that greyhound adoption has gotten so popular over the years as this now affords me the chance to own a beautiful dog such as those pictured in this thread. I now know that these dogs were bred to do this. This is what they do, what they love to do. We can't be upset because they were bred this way. As with all animals if they are well cared for and loved who are we to judge. Like Glacier's dogs, they are well taken care of and loved beyond belief and we all love to see her pics. I'm not going to say anything negative about his posts unless he shows me that the dogs are not taken care of and are abused, until then I will thoroughly enjoy his pics of these wonderful creatures.
wow, racing hounds race a lot more than racing thoroughbreds! I still love both sports, and I am lucky enough to have a track of each not too far away!
Well, I'd highly suggest visiting a greyhound track!
Admission is typically VERY cheap... racing programs to follow the hounds are a buck.. maybe alittle more... you dont HAVE to bet (When I go, I never bet.. I just take pics of the dogs).
A lot of tracks do weekend promotions to entice folks to come out and watch the hounds.. I know the tracks in Jacksonville, Florida have $.25 Fridays... everything, admission, programs, hot dogs, soda.. (Beers are half price... wouldn't you know it ;) )
Not only that, but you can get SO close to the track and get a really up close and personal look at the hounds and then when they run past you... it's like rolling thunder!!
*sigh* ...how I love greys, they are so beautiful.
