Zippy! :o :D
When I first saw this thread, this is what I thought I'd see:
http://images.google.com/images?q=tb...es/fireman.jpg
Not pee-pee! :D :o :D ;)
I received the following in an e-mail today and thought it would be fitting to post it on a topic where Phred would be sure to see it.
I have always thought that angels
wore halos and wings of white
But now I find they wear hard hats
and black coats with yellow stripes
And angels, in my mind, wore
long flowing gowns of white
But now I see dark pants and shirts
and badges shining bright
And angels always floated with
bare feet above the ground
Not true! For they wear steel toed boots
and go where death is found
Not all angels have smooth hands
that look like porcelain
Some angels have torn gloves and cuts
and burns upon their skin
And while I thought all angels
glowed from heavens light
I see an angel cutting steel
his torch is shining bright
And while these earthly angels
passed buckets of debris
The angels up in heaven
looked down on bended knee
So while the smoke continued
to rise into the sky
I watched the rescue workers weep
I've seen the angels cry
When everyone else is running out of the burning building.....
They're the ones running in.
I was hoping to find a cool image of an angelic fireman to post to go along with Pam's post. I didn't find one, but in my search I found the coolest page! Take a look!
Z I P P Y !!!!! :o

Hey Zippy ~
Ding... DONG :D
Now I have to get to work and post my story about "Bells". Not the sound of bells that call the firemen to the fire, but the sound of bells that call a fireman out.
Phred will now what I mean.
So Phred...Bridgeport? St Clairville? Or is that too far south?
As Chuck points out, "Bells" have always been important to the Fire Service. They are still used by many departments to sound out, inside the fire stations, the identification number of street alarm boxes...
When a citizen "pulls" the handle on an alarm box, an elaborate system of punced tapes and bells punch out and sound out the "box number" in stations all over the city. Pull box #234, and the bells strike out [** *** ****]. Firefighters in stations that are "first due" on box 234 start mounting their apparatus as soon as they hear the first two strokes of the "Bells" followed by a pause; the next two digits in the series of bell strokes tells them "where" the box is - corner of First & Main. In a busy department, trucks know axactly where they're going and are pulling out onto the street by the time the second "round" of bells begins repeating the box number. The next step is...
http://www.photogra.com/galleries/33...0116200726.jpg << puttin the fire out! :D
The other common use of "Bells" in the Fire Service is during funerals :( ~ The bell tolls out [***** ***** *****] for box 5-5-5, the Firefighter's Last Alarm...
So, do they no longer have that very annoying bell right behind your head? The one on the low pressure alarm on the air tank.

The newer air packs now have vibrating facepieces, flashing lights, and chirping beepers to warn of  low air. That's in addition to the PASS (personal alert safety system) alarm that starts *shrieking* if you're motionless for more than a minute.
Somebody decided the mere *bell* wasn't good enough! ;)
