poor Cirrus...and so young. Hopefully his youth will help with a quick recovery. I know it's hard not to worry. Thinking positive healing thoughts for the baby.
Hi everyone. Cirrus had his surgery today and everything went very well.:) I had a consultation with my vet tonight at 7:15pm but he was behind schedule so it was more like 8pm so I didn't get home until around 9pm.
Cirrus is still bleeding a little bit from surgery so we decided that I should plan on taking him home on Friday instead. Although the vet won't be working tomorrow, there will be a vet tech there to give Cirrus his meds and food and water. He has to be on antibiotics once a day and pain medication twice a day for the next 7 days. I decided to give it to him in the form of a shot because I thought it would be easier since he's wearing the e-collar. He has to wear the collar for 2 weeks and has already managed to get out of it once so far. If he does get it off, I have to take him to the vet asap so his stitches can be checked. He goes back for a recheck next Friday.
Cirrus looked very unhappy and uncomfortable.:( He also looked like he was mad at me. I sure hope that he'll realise that I've only been trying to help him. Sunny misses him very much and Sky has been acting up a lot more than usual so I think he also misses him. Storm, on the other hand, has been in heaven. I bought a baby gate to block off a small area for Cirrus and a low opened litter pan and some yesterdays news litter.
Thanks for all of your well wishes and concerns. Please wish me luck because these next 2 weeks are going to be very long.
Thanks for the update, Tracey! HUGS and gentle pets for sweet Cirrus!!!! :)
Tracey, I'm so glad to hear it went well. :) I remember how it was with Fister, so I don't envy you. In fact, I'm glad Fister stayed for the first few days at the vets and we didn't see him.
I hope Cirrus will keep his collar on. It is really important that he can't get to his behind! It's a good idea to confine him to a small area, so he can't run around.
All the best of luck and scritchies. :) Thanks for the update.
I am so happy to hear Cirrus is ok:)
Fister now is ok for 1,5 years, so this seems to be a very effective surgery.
However the recovery time will be tough. I don't want to think about how it would work with my two rambunctious boys and wish you all the best: It will be over and he will be fine:)
I am glad the surgery was a success. YES, the next few weeks will seem like FOREVER, but in reality, it is short compared to a lifetime without troubles. So hang in there, we are all with you.
I am glad to hear that Cirrus's surgery wnt well. I hope he is feeling better soon and has a good recovery and no further problems.
{{HUGS}} for you Tracey and gentle pets for you, Cirrus.
I'm glad to hear Cirrus' surgery went well. It is probably just as well that he stays at the vet for a couple of days where they can keep an eye on him. I know it probably makes you feel mean and evil though! :)
Keeping my fingers crossed that things go well when you get him home. Please let us know.
Tracey, I'm glad to hear everything went well for Cirrus. Both of you will continue to be in my thoughs and prayers.
P.S. When Smokey had his surgery he too managed to get out of hte e-collar. My vet let me use a different kind of collar. I do not know the name of it but what it was a very think collar (kind of like what a person would wear if they were in a auto accident) and then the collar was attached to what looked like a walking harness that went over his shoulders and then under the belly. Well, Smokey never managed to get out of this and was not able to get to his stitches. ---Meg
I'm so glad the surgery is over and was successful! Great news!! I don't envy you the next few weeks but hopefully it will pass quickly.
Give lots of hugs and kisses to Cirrus from me and my crew. We are wishing him well!
Hurry home Cirrus and Get Well SOON!!!:D :D :D :D http://petoftheday.com/talk/images/o...es/biggrin.gif
So glad the surgery is over and was a success.:) :)
Thanks again everyone.:) I forgot to mention that Cirrus weighs a little over 16lbs  and my vet would like him to lose 3-4lbs. He'll be on the Calculi reducing diet so and I think he can only have 3/4 of a cup per day. Hopefully this will help him stay healthy and lose the weight too. He also can't run or jump for 2 weeks. I also learned that my vet's office will be opened on Presidents Day so that's a relief too.
I think the first 7 days should be fine because the pain meds make him sleepy. It's the other 7 that I'm worried about. I think I will ask my vet if he has another type of e-collar like the one Meg described.
Thanks for the updates Tracey! :) I am SO happy to hear the surgery went well. :D :D
Will be keeping you both in my thoughts and prayers for all to go well over the next couple of weeks.
Hugs and kisses to the Big guy!:D
I'm so glad to hear everything went well. :D I'm sure once Cirrus is home all will be forgiven, and once he's all healed he'll really thank you because he'll be healthy again and you and he won't have to worry about this coming back again and again and again.
Good luck with the next two weeks. It might seem like they take forever, but they'll be over before you know it. It seems like just yesterday Fister was going through this and look, it's been a year and a half already!
Hugs to you and hugs and smoochies to all 4 boys. :)
I was so happy to read that the surgery went well. I just knew that it would. Yes, I am sure that he does look a little mad, but you will be forgiven when he comes home. Joey had that same look while she was in the hospital. Just remember that this is for his health.
The next few weeks will seem like a long time but I am sure that you will survive.;):D
I don't know if your 3 will do this, but a little warning, they may hiss at Cirrus because he smells so different. Don't worry they will get over it. Bob hissed at Joey for 3 days after she came home from the vet. No fighting, he just didn't like the way that she smelled and would hiss every time they walk close to each other. Like I said just a forewaring, I hope it doesn't happen.
Well give the boy some gentle scratches for me, and let us know how it is going.
Continued prayers for a speedy recovery. Also some for you.
I know that this is rough, but hang in there. Come her to complain if you need to, I along with alot of other will understand.:D
Oh I was so happy to read that the surgery went well for Cirrus.
I hope and pray that he has a full and complete recovery.
Also wishing you KAK good wishes for the next 2 weeks that all goes well for you in dealing with Cirrus and that Sunny, Sky and Storm don't give Cirrus or you, too much of a hard time.
Hang in there.
So glad to hear the surgery went well. {{{hugs to help you hang in there}}}
GLAD TO HEAR THE SIR JURY WENT SO WELL!!!:)
Sorry Cirrus boy that you have to go on a diet.. i think you need to tell that silly doktor that 16+ makes a perfect kitty kat!!;)
Get well soon Cirrus.. *KISSES* for you!
Unfortunately Cirrus was a very bad boy at the vets. Yesterday even though it was my vets day off, he went to give Cirrus his meds. Well Cirrus was very grumpy and scared and he struggled so much that he managed to get out of his e-collar and he jumped off of the exam table and bit my vets leg pretty badly.:eek:They had to give him a sedative to get the e-collar back on and give him his meds. When I came in to pick him up, my vet said "Killer's Mom is here". I think the whole office was glad to see him go.
When I got home, I put Cirrus in a small confined area in my bedroom. I bought a baby gate to block him in. Within minutes he managed to knock over the gate and escape into my bedroom. Now I'm forced to let him have free reign in my bedroom. The other 3 will have to learn to live out in the main part of my condo. I also had to move the other 2 litterboxes out there because Cirrus can only use yesterdays news litter in an opened litter pan. In fact he already peed in it. He's also finally let me pet him a little bit.
I'm very worried that he's going to get out of his e-collar because part of the string that's used to tie it around his neck is already hanging down. I hope I'll be able to wrap it around his neck or I may need to take him back to the vet again tomorrow so they can retie it. My vet only has this one type of e-collar. I'm also going to try to mix his meds in some c/d wet food that they gave me. I fed him some of the dry food tonight and he loves it.
I also can't believe how active Cirrus is. He's acting pretty normal except that he bumps into everything due to the e-collar. He's not supposed to run or jump and he's been doing both so far. I don't know how to stop him from doing this. Since he's not your normal mannered cat, he won't be going back to the vet until he gets his stitches out which won't be until Feb. 25th. I made the appointment for 9am which is the earliest that they have.
Please wish me luck.
He sounds like he is doing quite well, even with the e-collar. I am sure that you are going to have your hands full for the next couple of weeks. However I am happy to hear that he is using the litter box, that sounds like a good sign.
I am sorry to hear he has a reputation at the vet now. Bob is getting one too.
Let us know how is doing, I expect updates.:)
Prayers for him to contiue on his speedy recovert. Prayers for you too I think that you will need them.:D
poor Cirrus!!!
I hope he is feeling better soon!!!
Sorry to hear that Cirrus was so stressed at the vet's :(. But now that he is home, he can recouperate in comfort.
If the e-collar looks like I believe it looks, you might be able to keep it on with a collar instead of gauze (or other type of ribbon that is tied on) The collar should fit through the loops and it will buckle into place.
Don't stress yourself about his running and jumping, it has been my experience that they pretty much do what they feel like they can do.
Best of luck. The next 2 weeks will go fast.
Oh, poor little Cirrus, I have just learned you have been sick with bladder oxalates and a blockage! My Luna has to deal with these things, so I know it's no fun!
Glad your surgery went fine, but it looks like you've been so scared and uncomfortable at the vet's! Please don't think your mommy did that to upset you, she only wanted to help you!
Good to know that you're at home now, and that you're active and use your litter box. But please don't be too active because of your e-collar, your mommy is worried about that!
Get well soon, sweet boy!
Kirsten
Another thing you can use to keep the e-collar on: cable ties. You can't get out of those.
Cirrus, now you behave yourself! Meowmie wants you to get better.
Oops! Cirrus bit the vet! Poor baby, he really must have been scared and upset!!! Well, Cirrus baby, you are HOME now and Mommy will be taking good care of you! ;) Please be a good boy and don't run and jump too much. Your using the new litterbox is a VERY GOOD BOY, though sweetie!!! We all love you here and want you to be all better soon!
Hugs to you and MOMMY!!!! :)
Glad to hear Cirrus is home, using the litterbox and letting you pet him some, also that he likes the new food. Hope the med mixing idea works.
Sorry to hear you are having problems with the e-collar, though Jen's suggestion of using a buckle collar instead of ties is great, I think that should work!
Not being able to keep him confined must be so stressful too, the thing that springs to mind is putting him in a big dog crate, pity they can't be hired. Though confining him that way could stress him out more, maybe not such a good idea after all!
Hope everything begins to get better and time goes fast!
Will be keeping you both in my thoughts and prayers.
Hugs
Chris
Sorry to hear Cirrus was so scared that he bit the vet. I am sure vets must learn how to live with that... he can't be th only one.
I think if he jumps and moves it is also a sign that he is feeling well. And I am sure his wound will be healed before the 25th. But of course you must see how to keep him quiet the next days.
I hope he calms down a little in his own environment!
Hang on, Tracey. :) :( :)
Oh, poor Cirrus - and you! He certainly doesn't seem to be happy about his collar. :( The good thing is that he's probably feeling OK concerning the operation, since he's so active. :) I really hope you can keep him relaxed, so the sticthes won't break open! It's so important!! Hearing this, I'm glad Fister was kept in a cage for the first 5 days. Have you considered giving him a tranquilizer? Perhaps 2,5 mg. of Diazepam (Valium) for the first few days would make him less active.
This is the collar Fister had to wear for 10 days. He didn't like it, but accepted.

Now, slow down, Cirrus!! ;)
Hi everyone. Last night was very stressful for everyone.:( I only managed to get about 1 hour of sleep. When I tried to sleep in my room with Cirrus, my other 3 cats would cry at my door and then Cirrus would start crying and scratching the door with his e-collar.:( When I tried to sleep on the couch with Storm, Sunny, and Sky, Cirrus would start crying, scratching, and pounding on my bedroom door.:( I finally had to sleep on the floor in my bedroom near my door to try to prevent Cirrus from scratching it and crying.
This morning I tried to give him his antibiotics in his wet food and he started to eat it but then must have tasted the medicine and would have nothing to do with it.:( He was also trying to use his litterbox and was crying in pain but nothing was coming out. I noticed that he had peed on one of the pee pads which are around the litterbox.
I decided to take him back to the vet to have his e-collar tightened, his stitches examined, and his meds administered. My vet is out of town so there was a very nice woman vet who is covering for him. She gave him some gas to sedate him and secured his e-collar and said his stitches look fine.:)
Since my parents are out of town until early March, I decided to take Cirrus to their house and put him in their bathroom. I'll be able to check on him 3 times a day now because it's very close to my work and I can go there during my lunch break. I felt he needed a much quieter place without the distractions from my other cats. The first thing he did was to jump in the bathtub so I put a towel down for him in there.
I sure hope he'll be fine now and that I won't have to go back to the vets until the 25th. I've also decided that I'm only going to take him to the vets if he's sick or hurt in some way because it's just too traumatic and stressful for both him and me. I hope you don't think that I'm a bad meowmie for doing this.
Of course we don;t think you're a bad meowmie! In fact, a healing time in seclusion sounds just purrfect, especially because you can check on him so frequently.
Oh Tracey! :( What you have to go through to calm him down! I hope the new arrangement will work, it sure sounds like a good idea! :) If there's any way you can stuff a pill down his throat, do it! I suggest a 2 1/2 mg Diazepam - that must slow him down a bit!! Ask your vet!
I hope you'll get a good nights sleep, you certainly need it!!
Hugs to you, and I don't know what to Cirrus!! Tracey, you're a great cat meowmie!! :)
Btw, put a towel or blanket in front of the bathtub, so if he escapes, he'll land on something soft.
You are not a bad meowmie!!!!!
A bad mom would not have done all of this in the first place. She would also not care enough to try to find a better situation. Repeat after me, I am a great meowmie.:D Good, now keep repeating that.;)
What you are doing is helping Cirrus get better, even if he does not realize it.
I am sorry that last night was so stressful for you and I hope that the new accomidations will work. I think it is a great idea, it will help reduce the stress level for everyone.
I know it is hard when you have a sick baby and all you are trying to do is help and all they are doing is figting you. Please come and tell us about it anytime, we understand.
Prayers still going to Cirrus for a speedy and full recovery. Also some prayers of comfort to you.
Big {{{{HUGS}}}} to you also, I know that you will make is through this.
Hi everyone. Here are 3 surgery pictures of Cirrus. The first one shows his e-collar and the last two are a bit graphic because they show his shaved bottom. He's now claimed the bathtub as his new bed. When I went to give him his nightly feeding, I opened the bathroom door and it looked like a cyclone had hit the bathroom. He had balled up all of the blankets and had almost turned his litterbox upside down. I sure hope he'll get used to living in the bathroom for a while and become more relaxed. Here are the pictures.

Here he looks like a very grumpy little bo peep.

This sure looks painful.:(
Oh Tracey! You and Cirrus sure have had a rough few days. I hope Cirrus continues to heal and that it gets less stressful for both of you!
That first picture is adorable!!!!!! He'll settle. What a great opportunity you have by leaving him at your mom's. I hope the rest of the week goes much smoother for you and Cirrus.
Aw, poor Cirrus. The dirty look in the first shot is priceless, though! Get well soon big boy.
Aww, he's adorable with his little Bo Peep hat. I hope he quietens down and doesn't give you any more trouble!
Tracey, thanks for the updates and pictures. Poor Cirrus, his rear end does look sore, but he sure looks cute in the collar!
I hope you had a good sleep last night with Cirrus being at your Moms (great idea!).
Hugs
Chris
Have been reading about Cirrus...Glad the surgery went well but it seems like the after is the more difficult part.
Cirrus please keep the nasty E-collar on for now. It will be off sooner than you think and you will feel so much better.
Hope everyone can get some sleep that always helps!
P.S. It took me a while to figure out what "sir jury" was:(
Poor Cirrus. I hope he's feeling better soon. {{{hugs}}}
