Her parents can't change their opinions from what they are. I never said her parents should change their opinion.

I think it's wrong that some people don't love their pets as much as their children. I love my dogs and would much rather have them than a child any day.

I know she may have loved it, what if she love her human child (when/if she has one) but her parents didn't? Does that mean it shouldn't get medical help if needed, just because her parents don't like it? Maybe that doesn't apply to her situation though, since it seems animal children aren't as important to her parents as a human child is.

Yes, I know this. It was deleted for a reason as well. I realized the stupidity of it and rose higher. :)

What we all need to realize is that pets are NOT barbie dolls. They are not disposeable as such. When you take on a new pet, it does not matter what is wrong with them, or how long we have had them. We are still RESPONSIBLE that they get the care that they need, whether it be medical care, food, exercise, grooming, whatever.

The other thing I am hearing here is (maybe not in this specific term) "Oh it was JUST a rat" :rolleyes:"We only had him for a day" Man, I hate that!!!! It was a living creature for crying out loud!!!

I just found this out! :) Bernese mountian dogs have been used for drafting for a number of years! It's one of the things the breed does best. So the whole reason the tension got stared was pretty unfortunate, because pulling is something that the breed has a drive for. :) I just looked up some other info too. Neat breed! :D

Um....what are you talking about?? How can hunting dogs, which are bred to do jobs such as tracking, killing, retrieving, dragging, flushing, etc...not be muscular enough to do the job!?! Your statment makes no sence at all.

A Coonhound doesn't have to weigh 200 pounds, because the game it is bred to go after, raccoons & possums, weigh under 30 pounds.

A Bloodhound isn't bred to drag it's kill, it's bred to track the game, but it could drag it if it was trained to drag the kill.


If you want a hunting dog which can drag big game such as wild sheep, deer, boar, small bear, lynx, bobcat, etc you would get a Samoyed, Elkhound, Karelian Bear Dog, Norwegian Elkhound, West Siberian Laika, or a Norbottenspets- which are bred for hunting big game.

Bottom Line: Hunting dogs are muscular enough to do the job they are bred to do.

P.S. A Bernese Mountain Dog's aptitude is cattle-driver, tracking dog, watchdog, and family pet. It's not meant to be a big game hunting dog used for dragging its masters kill.

He doesn't want a hunting dog for the millionth time. And he isn't hunting possums or racoons. I don't even know about where you live, but that's pretty illegal here. He's hunting deer and moose. He doesn't want a hunting dog, he wants a dog that can drag kill. He wants a bernese mountain dog. What's with people saying that a dog that he wants to take hunting automatically has to be a hunting breed? That's like breedism. If anyone here has seen dog carting on tv or anything, the dogs that I see most used are malamutes and pitbulls. Not hunting breeds. A dog does not have to be a hunting breed to pull.

I live in Wisconsin, which you can see in my status bar. In Wisconisn they want you to kill as many raccoons as possible because they are causing tons and tons and tons and tons of economic damage, along with deer. They are problem animals in Wisconsin.

I bet you are right, but his heart is set on this breed!

He could probably find one in a shelter or rescue group if he kept his eye out. I know I've seen some come through my shelter.

Raccoons are classified as furbearers under the Wildlife Act, and may be trapped in season by registered trappers who have a valid trapping licence. If you are in an area that is open to the discharge of firearms and you have a valid hunting licence, raccoons may be legally hunted. However, if you are in an area where the use of firearms is prohibited, raccoons may not be captured or killed without a permit.

When you break that down into easy terms I believe it says that raccoons can be hunted in British Columbia. BC Site

yes onlyif they were a puppy though because we want it to grow up with Oscar,and we dont want a male either,because of dominace issues. but I think he might think about going to a rescue for BMD,so thats good:D. we wont be getting it till I graduate and move out, so this could be alittle longer then next year.

Thanks! :D My dad told me that it was illegal to hunt racoons, possums, skunks, and other small critters...Guess he was wrong haha. Well, i'm not going to correct him, or the racoons in his back yard are goners! :eek:

Well, we haven't had BMD puppies, but we have had some really cute Great Pyranees and St. Bernard pups. Anything's possible so have him keep his eyes on the rescues :)

And he may just fall in love with a BMD mix pup.

i read in DogFancy that you have to buy special food for bernese mountain dogs. because when they grow their weight does a job on their legs. the food is supposed to help strengthen their bones so they can support their enormous weight.
