Sue, I am so glad to hear that his tumor was benign. So sorry to hear about his leg hurting him. He is such a gorgeous and sweet guy. I have fallen in love with him through your posts and picture.

I don't have a digital camera, so I'm working on using up a roll of film to show you what this poor skinny baby looks like. Everyday I tell him that I love him. I wonder if he has ever heard those words before? No wonder his leg is hurting. They kept him outside all the time with not much people contact, I'm sure. He loves to be petted and rubbed. He just talks and talks (just like my Wolf would). Shiloh will come over and groan and talk back, too. He is such a love. I can't wait til he feels better. We go to the vet again tomorrow, to see how the stitches are doing. I'm going to see when the vet thinks that he could have x-rays taken. Then I'll send him up to Skokie to have it done. The aspirin doesn't do a thing for him. :(
YEAH!!! That just made my day! Way to go Gaylord!! Hopefully you're on the road to recovery. I hope your leg feels better soon.
Sue, you can tell him from Mike and me that we love him too even though we haven't met face to face.
Awww, thanks Molly and Mike. I'll tell him that a lot of love is coming his way from the wonderful PetTalkers.Quote:

We've been "Up North", too!!!:) ;)
I am so happy that Gaylord doesn't have cancer. He seems like the sweetest dog. He deserves to have a happy life!
Tell him I love him too!!
How many times have I told all of you how much I appreciate your love, concern and prayers for my furpups. Not enough! Thank you all again from the bottom of my heart.
Gaylord had a bad night last night. I wish he could talk and tell me exactly what is wrong. I know it was his leg and I also think it was his stomach (aspirin). I stopped giving the aspirin to him starting today. It isn't helping him any. He goes to the vet today and I will ask when he can go for his x-rays. He needs that leg fixed soon. My heart is breaking and I'm exhausted. All three slept with me in the family room. Gaylord started whining then it went into a full blown howl (pain? or did he hear something? I didn't.) Shiloh joined him. G/L is still wary of Shiloh. He gives her his little groany growl when she gets too close to him. Killi tried playing with him yesterday, but he is in no condition to play. Will update after the vet visit.
I should have been a vet. (sigh)
We *ALL* shudda been Vets! :rolleyes:Quote:

Ohhhh - if *only if...*
<sigh> Phred ;)
I'm so sorry Sue. Please let us know when you know something. You and Gaylord will be in our prayers.
Back from the vet. Stitches still holding up good, no fever, dehiscence repair (notice the new word) looking good.
The vet says that there is pain in the hip and in the knee. The rescue said to try Rimadyl for two weeks to see if it helps. She seems to think that maybe he injured himself by falling down the icy stairs at the house she picked him up at. When she had seen him the previous day, he was walking fine. So we are going to hope for just an injury and not HD or ACL at this time. If this does not work than we will try something else.
Good thing I am a canine liver disease Mom, so I will be at the ready to observe any liver malfunctions while on the drug. He is on a lower dosage. Wish him luck that this is just an injury and the Rimadyl will do the trick.
Today I really had to laugh. When we brought Gaylord back from the vet, Killian brought him a toy and did a slight play bow and did a little bark at him. I haven't seen him do that in a long time!!!! Apparently G/L does not know how to play because he just stood there and looked at him. Shiloh is still not sure of him. She likes him and then she barks at him. She just can't decide!
I actually looked into go back to school to become a vet tech. Can't afford it right now though!Quote:

Good news for Gaylord! Hope the rimydal works. It must be just wonderful seeing Killian playing again!
What a big day you had Gaylord! It breaks my heart to know you are in such pain:( Hopefully the Rimadyl will ease your pain, sweet boy. And what a fine doggie nurse you've got there in your Mom! I know she's doing all she can to keep you safe, comfortable and happy.:)
Sue, we're keeping our paws crossed that it's an acute injury and not a chronic condition. You must be so exhausted.:( But we all applaud your incredible love, devotion and dedication!! I had to smile when I pictured Killi doing a play bow to Gaylord! Star's jealous!!:D
We're sending all of you or love and prayers! Of course, lots of slurpy licks and tail wags from the girls to those beautiful kids of yours!
Prayers and positive loving thoughts that the medication eases the pain for Gaylord and also that the pain is from the injury and not chronic condition.
Oh, it is so heartwarming to read of how Killi gave the play bow with his toy..:) love and hugs to you all.
C'mon Sue, don't you remember? It's the woman's perogative to change her mine?? lol ;) Shiloh will come around, I'm sure. I smile all the time thinking about Killi being so much better with Gaylord there. Hopefully the meds will kick in and it is only an injury (listen to me...ONLY an injury,,,you know what I mean) and not HD or ACL.
Gaylord, I've been thinking a lot about you!! Thanks for being such a good influence on Killi and just turn on the charm for Shiloh, you'll win her over.
Now, now, Molly.......hehehe
In all that other news, guess what I forgot to mention? Gaylord had gained 4 lbs. He is now up to 73!!!!!!!!! Woohoo!
Guess who called last night when I was out to see the "Rockettes Christmas Show"? Leonberger Rescue!!!!!!!!!!
I can't believe it!!! She is supposed to call back today. I'll let you know what happens!!

WOOHOO Gaylord!! Way to go my man!!
So, now you may have yet another foster eh?
You're as a big of a sucker as we are!! Not that that's a bad thing you understand!
Sue,
Your story of Killian's play bow to Gaylord made me
smile too.:D What did someone say about a "Blessing
in Disguise". YIPPEE for Killian & Gaylord.Very glad to
hear there is no cancer !!! Many prayers coming your
way that everything works out well for ALL your furkids.
Wouldn't you know, now would be the time when you
get a call from another Rescue group.:D Thanks for all
the updates on the kids. I really look forward to each one.
Love & hugs from Liz & Moki:D
Update:
Gaylord has had a reaction to the Rimadyl. He has been vomiting all his breakfast and then some. Now he is off that drug. Can you believe this is happening to this poor boy? I can't tell you how bad I feel for him.
The Leonberger Rescue lady was looking for someone to adopt a 9 year old female with separation anxiety from the West Coast. I had to turn her down, being that I have Killian, an elder, and pain in the wiggle-butt Shiloh, who would pester her too much. 9 is old for a Leo. She said she would keep me in mind for a younger male or female or for fostering or adopting.
Some good news (maybe). G/L was supposed to be at an adoption event in Northbrook (far from me) today. Since he is not well, I declined bringing him. A grandmother lady who does not work came to see him at the event. Instead, he was home, puking his guts out. She has my number and will give me a call to possibly meet with G/L. :) :( If I feel she is a good match, I will be happy for Gaylord. He needs a certain type of home. She sounds like she may fit. BUT, we'll see.
Poor Gaylord:( Will the vet be trying another medic??? The poor guy's been through so much!! Sorry that he couldn't be at his big event today. I'm sure he would have been a HUGE hit! But the important thing for now is to get him feeling better. Perhaps the G'Mom lady will be a good match. But of course, our Sue will not accept anything but the perfect forever home!!:) Sorry about the Leonberger rescue Sue. Perhaps another, younger rescue will be the perfect match for you, Killi and Shiloh!! Give all my love!
Sue, I am so sorry to hear about all the complications Gaylord is going through. It hurts my heart to think about the pup in pain and suffering. So, now that Rimadyl is not working for him, what's next? I am glad that he has put on some weight.
I sure do hope the Gmother lady is a good match for Gaylord. He deserves the best forever home and all the love he can handle!!
Keep up the good work, Sue! You're awesome!
Oh poor Gaylord boy :( He's been through so much and the added trouble with Rymidal is just too sad. You are such a good foster mom to him. He's lucky to have been sent to you. I hope he starts doing better and good luck on the potentil adoptive parents.
Hugs to Killi, Shiloh & sweet Gaylord from me.
Just spoke to the possible adopter. Sounds like a wonderful woman! G/L would have a great home. She has previously been owned by 5 GSDs in her past. She will have him with her always (except when she goes to Germany). Now, we've got to fix that leg and get him to meet her hopefully on Sunday!
Tomorrow I will have to run all the way to the vet and get him some different kind of medicine for his leg. I sure do hope that it helps.
It's going to be hard to let him go, when the time comes, but if he goes with this woman, I will know that he will be in good hands.
When the woman was told that G/L is skinny now, her granddaughter started laughing.......and said just wait til he gets home with grandma, that'll be fixed! A lady after my own heart!
Please, please pray that his leg heals and it was nothing more than an injury. We need a little miracle here.
Sue,
You and Gaylord will be in my prayers . Bless your kind heart for providing this precious boy with tender loving care. I'll also be praying G/L goes to a forever home which could provide him with love and attention that he deserves (just like what you've been doing:) ) ... I'm very positive that this will be another story with a very happy ending :) You've done so much for this boy... Wherever he goes, I know that you'll be his 'forever guardian angel' ... We're so proud of you! :) :)

Success. Gaylord is scheduled for x-rays tomorrow. Wish us luck. He is not any better. Just started Ascriptin to see if it will help.
My parents Great Pyr (remember Bandit) went to the ER yesterday. He has a fractured toe and fluid in his chest, no fluid in the lungs. At this moment, he is seeing a specialist. Please pray for him, too.
Now, seriously, I SHOULD have been a vet.
Oh Sue!! Well, I'm so glad that Gaylord will be getting his xrays. I hope the Ascriptin helps him a little until they diagnose him. That poor boy's been through so much. And prayers for sweet Bandit are at the top of my list. Please let us know how he's doing. YOU need a BIG hug!!!!:) Love and hugs to Killian, Shiloh, Gaylord and Bandit and Sue! Sue, re: the vet reference...They do say, it's never to late!!;)
They also say, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks!" LOL hahahaQuote:

Bandit had an ultrasound and had a very hard time getting the liquid aspirated. Thursday, the results will be in.
You GOT me!!!:D :D :D
I will keep both of them in my prayers, Sue.
Okay, prayers on the way for Bandit, and for Gaylord - named after the great pitcher Gaylord Perry perhaps? I hope his leg gets better quickly.
A beloved person we know took in a 6-year-old Newfoundland with bad hip displaysia. When we first met the dog "W", he had to be picked up to get in and out of his new mater's truck. Thankfully this friend is a big guy, so it wasn't a problem. The people who actually owned the dog knew about the HD, but didn't want to pay for the surgery, and now, 6 years old is getting up there for a Newf, so the vet didn't want to chance surgery now.
Well, when we saw "W" a year later, he hopped out of the truck on his own, and romped! and played! in the yard with the other dog. Just for a few minutes, but what a change. W had lost 30 pounds, and gained a lot of love and care, and that made all the difference. He runs with a rolling gait, but to see him play just made my heart leap for joy! HD need not be a death sentence!
Yes, Karen, HD isn't a death sentence anymore. I think there are four kinds of hip surgery out there now. Since his tumor was benign, maybe they'll consider surgery for him. He is such a sweetheart. This morning when we dropped him off for x-rays, he growled at the other dog in the office. The cat was ok.
Last night was another rough night. He kept me up from 2-3:30. I took him out four times and that wasn't what was ailing him. After that, he slept. Thank goodness.
Bad news. Gaylord has HD in both hips, the left being worse. :(
What are they going to do??? Please don't tell me the worst ok?? Will you keep him then? Will that lady still take him??
Molly, I don't know anything for sure yet. I picked Gaylord up when the rescue lady was at work and I didn't get a chance to hear what they intend to do for sure. She did say maybe the cheaper surgery would be an option. She will get different meds to me, too. I am to bring him to the adoption event on Sunday still.
The vet said to be sure he does not walk on stairs. (That will be hard, I have stairs everywhere. He will be restricted to the family room, foyer and front room. It will kill him not to come into the kitchen when Killi and Shi are there or come up to my bedroom (however since I got him, I've been sleeping in the family room with him). Poor boy.
Just a thought, but, have you considered getting ramps for him to use on the short stairs area???
I feel so sorry for Gaylord :( I wish him well.... Is there any other option other than surgery? :( We'll keep him in our prayers.... I hope he's not in so much pain and discomfort :(
Oh Sue! This news just breaks my heart. Poor Gaylord!
Perhaps a ramp would make it possible for him to come to the kitchen? Or maybe you can let Killi and Shiloh hang out with him in the family room so that he doesn't get lonely.
Gaylord is in my thoughts. Please give him a big hug and lots of kisses from me.
Sorry Sue, this is so late, altho I have been trying to catch up.
Of course my 1st thought was how lucky G/L is to be with YOU! I too echo the thought of his being such a good influence for Kili. I honestly never even knew a dog didn't know how to play.... Shi has 2 males to contend with? What's her secret (lol)
The Codster's been on Rimydal 2x a day since October for HD and artho in his knees from ACL surgery :( It was a tough decision but
really helped him a lot, altho I watch him like a HAWK! Breaks my heart. Ascripton worked too, but C was suffering a wee too much for my liking.
I've been meaning to ask you forever..what signs should I look for for liver disease? He's due for blood work in 2 weeks..I'm taking no chances. Hell, I go blood work for Celebrex
Grma sounds like a dream come true....lots of attention and loving...OO I hope she works out. The poor, sweet boy deserves a wonderful life after leaving you. I'm cursing the previous owners. What is wrong with people???? Saving grace is that there are people like you in this world.......
Love you lots....
So you and Gaylord will be at the adoption event Sunday? Is it still "northern"? If so....could you tell me place and time so we can try to attend?
thanks
Sara
