Hi, I notice you're in Florida, so you'd need to know something about the Pet Therapy scene in the United States (I'm from Australia). I've just found the forum topic that Genia started called Dog Who Heal (under Dog General). It's all about pet therapy & has some useful U.S. information in the many posts. So that would be a great place for you to start finding out where to get into pet therapy in your country.
Pet therapy in my country Australia is probably very much like that in the U.S. At our dog Angel's children hospital, they have 5 dogs of varying sizes...one for each day of the (working) week. 2 are german shepherds, 2 are small tibetan breeds & 1 is a medium-sized mixed-breed. The small dogs are good for small children & can snuggle up gently with very ill children. The 2 huge, gentle shepherds are good for the children who can walk & play...the kids tumble over them & the dogs love it.
So there are places for all sized dogs in pet therapy. I guess your border collie would eventually be a middle-sized dog. I hope you find how to get into this volunteer work with your dog. A border collie would be so quick & clever to learn, too.
Pet therapy is very rewarding & can be done in a variety of settings. For example, our Angel's litter sister is a full-time pet therapy dog in a nursing home for the aged.
Best wishes.
Hmmm what to vote for... I of course think my Basset Daisy is the best but I really can't decide if she id a big dog or a little one! She has a big dog body and head... but little dog legs! LOL I guess I will have to cast my vote for medium!
both for me little dogs live longer
me perspnally I like big dogs such as Rotties Pit Bull german shepherds dobermans and much more i feel safer with abig dog because they can protect you. little dogs are that strong ....... i feel really safe having Simba around me...

Angels3,
How do I get my 4 month old Border Collie to be a pet therepy dog? http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif
Well, I guess I'm a little late getting into this topic. I've always only had Miniature Schnauzers - small dogs. However, I've never met a dog of any size I didn't like. I adore our neighbor's Rottie - and another neighbor had a wonderful pit bull terrier who would lick my face and escort me up the road if I went walking. If I had the room I'd have both kinds - large and small - and as many as I could afford to care for. That may come about as we are retired now and moving into the country!! We have rescued a huge Doberman and a Rhodesian Ridgeback and kept them in our yard until we could find homes or their owners. They were great dogs. Got along great with the resident Schnauzers as well. The funniest sight in the world is watching our neighbor's huge Rottie (he weighs 120 lbs and his head reaches my waist) play with our Schnauzers - they have a grand time together!!
I LIKE BIG BREEDS AND I CAN NOT LIE.ALL MY OTHER DOGS CAN'T DENIE. WHEN A DOG WALKS IN WITH AN ITTY BITTY WAIST AND SHOVES IT IN YOUR FACE U GET KNOCKED DOWN!
I MADE THAT UP!
I HAVE A ST.BERRNARD AND SHE IS 168LBS!!!
SHE HAS A LOT 2 LOVE!!!

hey mud puppy Sir Mix alot is good isnt he?? haha i love that song.... i could sing that song over and over and over again i know it by heart
Wow Carrie, that's awfully harsh. You don't seem to know this breed very well. All dog breeds have some type of problem. Yes, pugs do have some breathing problems and many can't "jog," but all the pugs I have met were warm, sweet, funny dogs who brought lots of joy and smiles. Not everyone jogs!! Pugs are perfect pets for an older, more sedentary person. Please don't be so negative. All dog breeds have something to offer someone. Big or small--DOGS RULE!! My little Cavaliers are sweet, loving, playful, and fearless. They can walk all day if you want to or snuggle with you on the couch. Love those Cavaliers!!!Quote:

Even if they do not have a medical condition that is treated by a vet a very large proportion of these dogs suffer during their lives. The very idea that an animal descended from the wolf hasn't got the breathing capability or the legs to jog with it's owner is, well, I will be thrown off this site if I say what I really think!!!!!!!
I like big dogs but I don't really have a reason I just always have liked big dogs.
