Mitzi shares Nakita's pain. She had to have three teeth extracted at her dental last week. She's taking her sweet time bouncing back, although she's thoroughly enjoying the all wet-food diet.
I do hope that whatever is going on with Nakita is easy to treat. Hopefully the dental work will help. I had no idea Mitzi's teeth were that bad either - they are experts at hiding discomfort.

Sweetie - with all the pain and possibly infection in her teeth, for quite some time, it could be as simple as the dental problem that caused everything. And it is NOT your fault!
Sometimes vets DON'T always check, and they should. I know there was a pet in our family - my parents or mine, I forget - and we were STUNNED that some teeth needed to be extracted! This pet had had regular checkups - and the vets never said anything...so how were to know? And how were you?
I suspect that's why they want Nakita to come back for more bloodwork - in case the dental situation skewed the results from the pre-op.
I believe that with healed teeth, Nakita will be a new cat!

Kass, I'm so sorry to hear that Nakita needed to have 2 teeth extracted:( but please don't blame yourself. My Storm had to have 1 tooth extracted last year and the vet had only told me that he had some tartar and some gingivitis but that his teeth looked very good. They sometimes can't tell until the cat is put under anesthesia. I sure hope that these extractions will now solve Nakita's problems. I also hope that her next blood test will come back normal. I am so sorry to hear this. I have two kitties with teeth problems, so I know that you cannot see anything and cannot detect much in behavior.
Tigris also lost two teeth up to now- although we clean every one and a hlaf year.
I keep my fingers crossed for the bloodwork.

Just so you know, the blood test results that didn't come back normal are a very big concern. We're getting them redone on Friday, but I don't think much will change.
Nakita's low red cell levels are showing her to be anemic. On the blood test, the packed cell volume (PCV) should be between 25%-45% in a normal cat but Nakita's tests show 14.9%. Other cats who are around that range should be listless, confused etc. Nakita didn't show anything, except maybe a little less energy which I thought was the result of the upset stomach/food trials. :( If you go to google and type in packed cell volume (PVC) or hematocrit values, it will explain more.
But she did mention she might have to do a bone marrow biopsy as a last resort. Some causes of anemia in cats include autoimmune disease, feline leukemia virus, feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV)..... :( I'll know more on Friday, but this just hit me out of the blue.

Kass, do you think that she could be anemic because she's not eating very much these days? I know that if people don't eat right then they'll also become anemic. I sure hope that her blood work improves and that whatever the outcome is that it won't be serious and can be easily treated. Lots more prayers and positive thoughts are being sent her way. I woke up this morning to find clumps of Nakita's hair around the house. :( She's pulling the fur from her chest area. Since she had her dental on Monday, not sure if this was a pain or stress response or even her allergies. I gave her some pain meds early this morning.
I just spoke to the vet since Nakita still was pulling her fur. She's sleeping now but if she gets worse I'll bring her in tonight or tomorrow morning. I've just given her regular Prednisone dose to see if that will help.
It feels like the more I do for Nakita, the worse it gets. :(
Oh, poor Nikita. I hope the vet figures out what is wrong and that it can be treated and that Nikita will feel less stressed (and you as well!). It's so hard when you have a kitty that is sick and you just end up feeling helpless because there isn't much you can do until the vets get answers for you. Hugs to you and Nakita.
Kass, you and Nakita are very much on my mind. I hope Friday brings some constructive news - a way to help Nakita through this difficult time.

Oh, Kass, I'm so sorry to hear about Nakita's health problems. Prayers & positive thoughts on the way.
I had to move Nakita's vet appointment to this morning. Yesterday she was pulling her fur out in the morning and then slept all day. She has not shown any interest in eating for the last 16 hours. I tried everything yesterday to make her eat, but she wouldn't.
When I woke up this morning, she literally looked depressed and her eyes seemed 'empty'. We took her to the vet first thing this morning. She sent some bloodwork to an external lab to figure out what is making Nakita anemic. It could be any chronic underlying condition. We will have the results in the morning. Her body weight is down to 4.4 pounds. I just finished force feeding her Prescription A/D canned food. That was a fun experience...NOT! What a mess.
I'm really scared for the results tomorrow and I can't stop being emotional. My girl is so fragile right now and I don't know what they will tell me tomorrow. We need as many positive vibes and thoughts you can spare. I don't know what tomorrow will bring but it looks like a long emotional road ahead.
Please pray for my Emerald Girl.

Just heard back from the vet this morning. Nakita's red cell count has gone up to 21% from the 14% that showed earlier in the week. Not sure why, but it could have been how they tested the actual blood sample. Seems there's sometimes a difference in how the testing is done and therefore can change the results. The first test was done in-house and the second was sent to an outside lab. Everything else is normal and within range!!!! I don't know what happened, but all your prayers worked! :D :D :D We're still not out of the woods though. Normal PCV range for a cat is 25%-45% so Nakita is still under that. BUT, it could be that number is normal for Nakita.
Also, I syringe fed her half a can of cat food yesterday. Last night before bed, she ate some dry food on her own!:) When we woke up this morning, she greeted us at the bottom of the stairs and gave both Rob and I headbutts! She actually looked 'perky' this morning. She still needs a couple of days to recover, since she didn't get much food between Monday - Wednesday so it will take a while to get back to normal. But from looking at her today so far, I'd say she's at 60-70% recovered. I'll make sure she keeps eating and she should be back to normal by Christmas.

We have another appointment, after the holidays, on Dec.27th to recheck the values one more time to verify everything is stable. Also, as a precaution, we're upping her Prednisone to 1/4 pill daily just to help her system even out a bit. So it looks like my Emerald Girl is here to stay!
Now we just have to get back to the allergy testing....but I can handle that! :D

This is great news! It is just so sad when they are under the weather and we just don't know what to do for them. I would have freaked when she started pulling her fur out. Poor baby! I sure up it will be uphill for her now and she will eat her lettle heart out for you and get healthy and back to normal.
