Christa--No they just did a standard X-ray minus the barium. We thought she was vomiting due to either 1) the thyroid medication she was on or 2) her stomach did not like the new food I switched them to. I honestly did not think she had a blockage until she continued to throw up despite having removed her from both the medication and the food. :rolleyes: Prayers are coming your way!
Christa, I'm glad to hear Brodie is back home but sorry that he puked. I do agree that maybe you should just watch him to see - it could be switching him to a new food may be a factor. Ripley is my puker here and he does it in waves. He'll puke almost daily for a few weeks and then take a break for a few weeks. When he does throw up it is always in piles of three. Guess it likes to spread the joy. :rolleyes:
Anyway, I just recently switched the whole gang to a weight managment food and it made several puke at first even though I introduced it gradually. They hate the food and seem to only eat it as last resort. I'm going to have to find another brand but dread the puking again.
Maybe it's just going to take Brodie a little time to get his system back in order.
I hope you're right Lori. Initially the vet asked that I give the new food 6 weeks to see if it would make a difference. So I guess that's what I'm going to try to do.Quote:

He threw up 4 piles of food last night & 1 water. He doesn't seem to have a fever, just can't keep his food down.
I'm going to ask her about the pred . . . see if there is anything we can do to stop the vomiting.
Taking Brodie back to the vet today at 4:05. Not sure what's going to happen, if they'll want to keep him again or what.
I'm just numb from all of this. I've cried my eyes out . . . I'm just at a loss for words.

Awwww, I am so sorry to hear that Brodie is still having trouble with keeping his food down. Poor little guy.... and poor Meowmie! I know that you are just heartsick about this. I will keep Brodie in my thoughts and prayers. Please keep up posted after the vet visit. Lots of warm wishes coming your way.

Christa I'm so sorry. I hope they can get to the bottom of this quickly for both your sakes. Poor little Brodie.

Sick with worry though I am about my Ted, I'm in tears over Brodie. The vomiting sound too extreme for allergies, but then I'm not a DVM. Can you take him to a specialist center? Are you thinking of an ultra-sound? The barium could have flowed past an obstruction since Brodie eats sometimes and doesn't throw up, and he poops. An obstruction can move around and cause blockage and irritation sometimes, and then move away into a less obstructive position. Obstructions don't show up well on x-rays, as others have posted, that's why they can become dire emergencies. In your position, I'd go to a specialist or demand an ultra-sound. Actually, an ultra-sound will probably mean they will need to call in a specialist or you take Brodie to one. One of my vets is good at reading them, the other says he is not, but they still encouraged me to pay for a radiologist in attendance.
We are all rooting for Brodie, he HAS to get better.

Christa, I'm so sorry to hear that Brodie has made a turn for the worse again.:( I'd also request an ultrasound and hopefully this will be able to find the cause of his vomiting. Lots more prayers and positive thoughts are being sent his way. Please take care.

I really wonder what's wrong with him. You mentioned a food allergy in one of your earlier posts, so maybe he just cannot tolerate the food he's on right now.

I'm sorry to hear that Brodie still isn't feeling well and has to go back to see the vet again. :(

Brodie is home. Seems to be doing better. They gave him another round of fluids. She wants him to stay on the food for at least 3 weeks - to give it a chance to see a change - if there will be one. She also wants for us to change their water source. Right now we buy jugs of drinking water in plastic gallon jugs. We're going to start using water from the filter in the kitchen.
She also asked me if we had Asian Ladybugs in our house and if he ate them. Of course he eats them, he eats everything . . . She said that some cats are more sensitive to the toxins that they release and she said that she has seen cats that vomit profusely from eating them. Just another possibility.
I got a few cans of wet d/d and he has actually kept that down! I am VERY happy about that! Poor guy was probably starving!
Please keep praying for him. He still has a ways to go. I just hope that he continues to improve.
Oh Christa, I wish I knew what to say or do to make all of this go away. My heart is breaking for both you and Brodie. If only your vet could give you a definitive answer as to EXACTLY what's wrong. Is there any possibility of taking him to another vet for a second opinion? (((HUGS))) to you and, of course, prayres continue for Brodie. Please keep us updated?

Just now caught up with this thread and I am going to pray for sweet Brodie. Poor lil guy, what an awful time he's had (and you, too, meowmie!). It's so disheartening to progress for a day or two, then have a rude awakening and another setback.

I am so sorry to read that Brodie is still having problems retaining his food!!! Has the vet suggested that Brodie get 2.5 mg of Pepcid(famotidine) about 60 minutes before he eats?? We have been giving this to Ralph Syracuse and it has helped with his vomiting. You can find it in the grocery stores(the ShopRite here in NJ has their brand which we buy, it is a bit less expensive than the regular brand). It come in 10 mg size but with a pill spilter you can make the 2.5 mg dose for Brodie. I hope this might be of some help. Sandra
Glad to hear today's update. Is it possible that he might have to remain on wet food forever since that seems to be what he's keeping down?
I had no idea about the ladybug thing. I'm sure Pouncer ate a few of them in his day, but luckily we don't have an over-abundance of them around here.
Well, he kept the wet food down ONCE so I guess it's no miracle food. I gave him about a teaspoon full last night before we went to bed. He was begging & meowing & seemed to be hungry. He ate it and within 10 minutes, vomited it up. Let me tell you guys, I'd much rather clean up dry food than wet! :eek: That stuff sprayed all over the place! Luckily he vomited it up in the office on our hard floors!
Oh great, he just vomited up breakfast. :(
At least he got one meal yesterday that he kept down. I just don't understand how or why he kept that down and nothing else???

Oh my, poor Brodie. I am sorry to hear that he is still vomiting. We have those Asian ladybugs around here, and I know that Sasha has eaten some, but she has never had a vomiting problem. I know it is awful having a sick one, and even worse when the vet cannot find the problem, let alone a solution. Please keep those positive thoughts! And my girls and I will send more warm thoughts and prayers your way. Please continue to keep us posted.
I might try offering a small amount of food every few hours throughout the day. Maybe Brodie's tummy would tolerate that better than just offering couple times a day.
When humans have tummy troubles plain white rice stays down. I'd make some up and try it. Worse that could happen, he throws it up.
Only other thought is since he is throwing up so much withhold food for 24 hrs let his tummy settle down, leave out plenty of water for him to drink.
I'd check with the vet again see if you cant give him something (medication) before he eats. It's available for humans, animals should be no different :)

Christa, I'm so sorry to hear that Brodie is still vomiting.:( I've been feeding my cats 4 small meals a day, 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening. I wait about 2-3 hours in between the feedings and this seems to have helped my vomiting problems.
Maybe smaller meals would help for a while? His poor tummy has been through a lot...
Would IMOM cover an ultrasound?
Oh Christa, I was so hoping that you would have had a better update. Poor, poor sweet Brodie and poor you. Your nerves must be shot right about now.
Craftlady has given some great advice about maybe witholding his food for 24 hours. I know when one of my guys had this problem, I kept him isolated in a room with only water and then fed him small amounts for the next few days.
It worked for him.
Gosh how I pray that they are able to find out what the sam "H" is wrong with Brodie so they can treat it and get him back healthy again.

Hey guys. To answer some of your questions . . .
We have tried the small meals before . . . actually, that is all he ever eats, small amounts. Still throws up *anything* he eats. At one point, we thought he was OVEREATING and we tried to feed him less food at intervals throughout the day. At first we thought that was working and then he got to where he was vomiting even those smaller portions. :rolleyes:
I think he just likes to vomit! LOL
As for the IMOM thing . . . I checked into it . . . and since "My veterinarian has agreed to work with me on a payment plan" (one of the non-qualifiying guidelines in the app process) - I wouldn't qualify. Unless I would lie and get my vet to lie, which I won't.
I am going to try to give him the wet food again later this evening. He kept it down once yesterday. Maybe he can do it again today. PRAY that he can! Poor guy needs at least a little food in his tummy!
I was just thinking . . . I wonder if he could handle like one little kibble at a time? Feed him his food like they're treats? LOL Maybe it's worth a try.
I was on the computer earlier and there was a few *morsels* in the food dish, I saw him fish them out & eat them. There couldn't have been more than 4 or 5 pieces in there. Anyway, after I got done on the computer, I went through the house, seeing if I could find where he TOSSED 'EM and I couldn't find them . . . guessing he must have kept them down.
So I might try that occasionally . . . food as treats . . . very very very tiny portioned meals. Like miniture meals.

Another good report --> Brodie ate another small bit of wet food again tonight & kept it down. Only about 1 or 2 tablespoons, but that seemed to be all he wanted. Anyway, I'm REALLY REALLY REALLY happy that he was able to keep it down. :D
