I just adopted a 12 1/2 week old Border Collie pup.
She cried so much it sounded like you were torturing her.
Here's what I did:
- Her crate is in a room where there is a bit of human activity
- I take her outside right before she goes in her crate
- I cover her crate with a blanket (to prevent whining)
- I leave the radio on quietly so she's not as lonely
If she whines a bunch and doesn't shut up, I slowly creep into the room and growl "QUIET!!!!" at her.
I also immediately take her outside when I take her out of the crate.
