It's Ilene again -- we're definitely going for it -- looking at a young (10 mo) dog now, also male (but very friendly and just wags his body at everyone and everything).
Smudge met him and is a bit overwhealmed by him because this pup just jumps around and all he wants to do is play w/smudge, and smudge sits there like "yeah, ok, do what you want but I'm just gonna stand here" so I think smudge may not like him at first, but I'm hoping the pup's friendly nature will rub off on Smudge, and that Smudge will have a calming influence on the pup as he grows up.
Is this a smart decision? I figure the pup will eventually calm down and in the short term may annoy Smudge a lot but will hopefully grow to like him.
I hope.... (still a bit unsure but wow was this pup sweet!)

Well, we did it. Went to the same shelter and just by chance this little cutie walked by while I was waiting to see another dog (who went for Mika, so that was a no-no!) She and 2 other dogs were brought to the shelter, seems they didn't have much of a home, a building site or something. She was spayed, and knows what happens in a kitchen, so she must have some sort of home life in her past. She has no clue about "sit" or any other command. Mika took to her immediately, she's suitably submissive and they have an absolute ball. Even the cats aren't phased by her presence.
She doesn't have a name yet, so far: Chloe, Toffee, Truffle, Gypsy, Sugar, Fudge!
Here she is with Mika:
