Wal*Mart Betta Rescue...

I just went to Wal-Mart tonight to get my Aquaviews. . . there were only about 10 Bettas there, all of the tinsey jars were on a hanging rack (that looked like it was about to fall off!) and the water was absolutely disgusting! :( It was a wierd bright blue with tons of gross stuff, and all of the poor Betta boys were dull with tails completely down.

I know a guy who works in the Aquarium department, and they actually give away injured or sick Bettas for free. . . maybe Wal-Mart rescuers could show the fish to the employees/managers and ask if they could adopt them for free. It's better than *supporting* that disgusting practice :(. . I really hope the little guy lives a long healthy happy life!

I agree, he will be beautiful once his fins grow back!! :)

I felt so bad when I went to the PetsMart by our house the other day... There were TONS of bettas, each in only about 2 inches of water. :( There was one with practically NO fins, and it looked very unhealthy. :( I wish I could've rescued them all, but unfortunately, I can't. :(

Just going by what I have seen at my Walmart, I know that 80% of the fish bought from them die within a couple weeks even if they have awesome living conditions once they are bought.

I understand you not liking fish coming from Wal-Mart, I know i'll never buy another fish from Wal-Mart. I have no problem with that.

BUT, It's pretty damn heartless and rude to tell someone their pet is going to die. I don't think you'd necessarily like it if someone told you your pet was probably going to die.

I think a lot of times fish kept in poor conditions such as is usually the case at Walmart die because they come stressed and/or diseased and the average/beginning aquarist does not know how to minimize stress and treat them (i.e. I'm pretty sure most average aquarists do not have a cycled quarantine tank set up and going for new arrivals). Of course, there is still always a chance of a weakened fish not making it despite the best efforts being made, but bettas in particular are quite amazing little survivors and I'd say he has a good chance with Kara :).

It does look like another betta was in his cup. If it were merely fin rot, there would probably be blackened/shriveled ends on his torn fins. However, with his fins being torn, he has a much bigger chance of getting fin rot so Kara is doing the right thing by treating him as a preventative measure. She's probably doing very regular water changes and using something like StressCoat as well as adding aquarium salt to help heal the wounds.

At one time I may have been more skeptical of his chances too, but I have witnessed some amazing transformations (especially by BettaMomma on TFF and her 15 rescues :D).

Good luck with the little guy Kara, and bless your heart for rescuing him. I'm sure no one else would have wanted a betta with torn up fins and he'd have died there. You'll have to post pictures as he grows back his fins :)

I said the fish was "most likely" going to die, considering the condition it is in. And from what I know from past Walmart experiences. I still stand by my statement, it looks sickley and it looks like it is going to die. BUT if she has saved them before, then he has a chance. But I still dont agree with buying fish from Walmart... It was not heartless, maybe I came off a lil rude, but I was'nt meaning to.

Most likely, is, same difference. Telling someone their pet is going to die is indeed heartless, in my opinion. If someone were to tell me that my pet was most likely going to die i'd be in tears. It's a cruel thing to say.

I don't wish to argue about it because it's obvious Kara isn't upset over it, but maybe you should learn to think before you type something. Someone in the future may not be so understanding as Kara.

Like I said, it's just my opinion, take it or leave it.

I am sure if Kara has had betta's from Walmart live in the past, all the more power to her to resue them.. She is doing a good job by reporting their conditions to the managers etc...

Aw, he will indeed be very pretty once his fins grow back (They do, right?)! I personally think it's wonderful that you rescued him. And I can't wait for you to send that letter to them. :)


*sigh* I don't remember where I went one time, but there were lots of bettas on this tiny shelf, and the shelf was halfway tipped over, and there was glass on the ground!! So apparently one of the jars had already broke, and they hadn't even bothered to fix the shelf or move them. :(

Thank you! I actually did recently take a few pictures of him because his fins just keep growing and growing, he's one of the longest finned bettas I've personally seen, although the pictures don't really do him justice, for some reason his fins never look as impressive in pictures to me as they do in person. Here are a few of him :)

He could be a tail biter. I have one guy that bites his own fins (tail & dorsal). Apparently this is fairly common. Hopefully, that's not what it is in your guy's case, cause I haven't found a way to stop him.

I love walmart! It was a simple mistake of an unexperianced worker....please chill. don't say it's going to die, because I had a fish from a fish store like that and it is still living (from about a year ago).
Oh yeah, and the people accidentilly put two bettas together and it was an ALL FISH STORE! So don't blame it all on walmart, besides, she saved it... before the fish was eaten WHOLE!!!!:confused:

:( their "simple mistake" resulted in probably a ton of pain and trauma for that fishy, and sooo many other Bettas, which usually results in death. This is a common thing with Wal-Mart. Anyone who even has a remote knowledge of Bettas knows that they cannot be placed together (hence the name - Chinese Fighting Fish!!). I knew that the males would tear each other apart and even tear apart females when I was 8 years old :rolleyes:. . . its probably a lack of training that causes this. Wal-Mart (and other pet stores that sell fish) "Aquarium specialists" should know better than to put two Bettas together, and they should know better than to house them in tiny, filthy jars :(


OOh. . . also, K9soul, Orion is soooo handsome! Wow! He is such a pretty Pastel boy :D awesome fins too!!

Orion is BEATIFUL! Sorry, I mean handsome;) That was so kind and selfless of you to rescue him! For names, I would pick something like Lucky, Chance, Fortune, or Rovivrus (Survivor spelt backwards) Good Luck on naming him and taking care of him, I'm sure he will be okay in the end!

As for teh argument, I agree that it is heartless for someone to say that, but, this is about Kara and her fish! Why don't we all try to support her instead of arguing?:(

Wow K9soul, he really is beautiful! :eek: *drools* His fins most certainly have grown! I love his colors against the bright green plants in his tank. :) Thanks for taking the time to show me!!
