Lift leg or squat?

A friend of mine had a beagle. It took him a long time before he started lifting his leg. I'm sure duncan would start when he's older. hmm..sry, how old is he? I don't remember if you told me :(

Buddy Boy has lifted his leg only twice, once after being neuteredand when he had a female doggie friend over! In fact he does not squat he just keeps on walking and peeing at the same time!! He is 2 1/2yrs.

Kia squats and has always squatted. When she piddles and we move on, I get dirty looks from people. I'm assuming they are thinking I left poop there. Guess they think all dogs lift their leg when they pee.

When Kruzer and Kia were playing he lifted his leg at a tree and she seemed so intreigued! She stuck her face right in the way. EEEWWW!!! I call her pee pee head... literally. ;) :D

I remember the obedience trainer said most dogs will squat when they really have to go. Males will lift their leg to mark territory. A few dogs will lift their legs to really relieve themselves.

Tucker was a shelter dog and not neutered until he was 2. I really wanted a female because of the tendency for males to mark so when I saw Tucker squatting, I knew he was the dog for me.:) He continued to squat until Leslie's Graham came over for a visit and taught him how to do it like the big boys. heehee
Now he probably squats half of the time and leg lifts the other half. Thankfully he still does his business all at once, and only rarely will mark for markings sake. I call him my girly boy, as he is such a loving little fellow anyway, not into dominance or aggression at all. That's Hannah's thing! Ha

I'm so sorry, Rachel :( I wish Tucker didn't watch Graham when he did his business :(

i used to have a Labrador Retriever, he used to squat too, he was nearly 10 months when he got lost and he still used to squat! My brother told me that dogs learned to lift their leg when other dogs did my dog certainly always saw dogs peeing lifting their legs but he never seemed to get it!!!!

Dale is now one year old and up until last month he was still squating himself. I was told that after they turn a year old that they will start lifting there leg but they do need to see another male dog doing the same. It helps if you have other male dogs in the house but if you don't, I suggest taking him to the park and letting him see other dogs or if you have some friends that have male dogs, take him to them. My husband took Dale to our Friends house and he did everything that thier male dog did.

Thought this might give you a little giggle.
We don't have a dog -being a three cat family - but my daughter, Elizabeth, does. She rescued this lovely Heinz 57 (Mixed Breeds sort of Collie/Alsation) from an awful situation - and Tricky adores her Mum.
Now we have no idea how Tricky was trained .but when she pees it's so funny - (people stop and stare )- she stands on her front two paws with the back two way up in the air - looks like some sort of ballet dancer!!!!:D :D
She really doesn't seem bothered by her peculiar 'stance' and even watching other dogs hasn't persuaded her to 'go' differently!!!

I got an almost professional quality leg lift out of Duncan this past weekend!!! Right on a big tree!!!! Wooohoooo!:p :D :)

Well Duncan lifts his leg almost all the time now...on EVERYTHING!! He still squats like Kimmy said when I first let him out when I get home or in the morning but he lifts his leg on trees bushes blades of grass, Jack:p :D ;)

He also has a strange habit of peeing on the sidewalk not the lawn! He doesn't like to walk on the lawn if it's even slightly wet...weirdo!!! ;)

Geez I seem to be spending alot of time talking about Duncan's "elimination" habits....I've got to stop that! :D

I will jump in on this one.

At first, it seemed like Foster would never lift his leg. He did his puppy squat forever, and I wished he would hurry up and learn because he had already started squirt/spraying log distances (all over the feathers on his front paws). It turned out, it was a more a location thing than a maturity thing. I was taking him to pee around flat surfaces. Around bushes, he lifted. It was nice having him lift, but it took forever for him to finish (as he saved a bit for every bush). After neutering him, the squating came back. He only lift (halfway) if I position him next to a bush. The nice thing is that he goes all at once without getting his paws dirty. His squating is not the only puppy behavior to return :).

About the dog who did handstands....I watched a Westie for about a year, and I noticed he always did handstands. I read somewhere that it is to make it appear that he is a taller dog.

My mom's chiuauaua is female, but she grew up with a male lab. She lifts her leg and squats! What a site. No wonder she refuses to go in the snow.

Well I always had a leg lifter (Graham) until I adopted my Kersey girl and now I have a leg lifter and a squatter :)

My puppy Buddy who is six months old also squats when he as a wee but i also know somebody who as got a female yorkie that lifts her leg:confused:
