Buckle of Snap... which is better?

I got a really nice red leather buckle collar for Gull, but he rarely wears it. I like the snap ones better. None of mine are strong pullers or I might have a different view. The Collies are circlers and weavers and Murph's to busy stopping to pee on things to pull. I also don't really worry about them pulling their heads through or the collar breaking and them running off from me. The Collies are slaves to the hot dog, which I always carry in my pocket on walks and Murph is slow enough now I could catch him if I had to.

I've used so many diff collars, but none of them satisfied me, I can't say why, I just disliked them. One day I bought a PRIMEIR brand plastic snap and I loved it! I even got one w/ a cool purple and blue w/ spider design. The actual nylon of the collar is this! It was for Halloween, but I have decided I am going to use it on my next dog. We're getting another in the next 2 years. Probably very begining of summer 2006 or 2007
I hate harnesses. Period. I have one and I tried to use it several times, but I just hate how in a medium dog, the center of control is their back?!?! What's that all about?!?! I have tried a sporn harness thing(the armpit strings got too loose and Nino tripped on them) a harness, a regular collar(he backed out of it) a halti head collar, (despite repeated training, he always stopped and rubbed it off) I have used numeroud diff. collars with a halti and that works for maximum control. I have used choke(slip collars) chains, but my vet said they can dammage their muscles. I've also heard horror storries of dogs jumping up and getting the collar stuck on something and dieing when left alone for only a few minutes) And my fav, the prong (pinch) collar! Use it every time we leave the house or yard, or Nino will be loose and running in the street.

Gonzo always wears leather buckle collars, unless he's going to the lake or the park ;).. he usually wears nylon harnesses when he's out playing and going to get dirty, I also love them because I can just grab onto him and he cant slip out. He has never actually slipped out of any collar, because I always make sure its the perfect fit.

Rolled leather is the best collar! period! Instead of using choke chains/prongs, use a rolled leather collar adjusted properly at the neck and just secure enough to slide two fingers between the collar and the dog

Timber wears a snap collar. She's had her main collar for almost 4 years and we've never had one problem.

I had a snap collar for my bridge dog Muffin,, but it made her hair go funky,, so we switched to a training collar instead.

Kirby has a cute little snap collar too,, but he doesnt like any kind of collars. even the training ones. he scratches at his neck all day till its removed so he stays a 'naked dog' LOL

Same here!!

I use both but I prefer a leather collar with a buckle. I have seen a dog break a plastic snap.

Where do you get those? Or do you make them?

I have only used the buckle ones so far but the snap ones really look practical I might try it on my dog one day.

I don't know if Glacier has the same kind or is talkingabout the same thing I am, but the most common ones I have seen at called Martingale collars, and are made by Premier. There are a few training facilites and the Humane Soceity here in town sell them. They are also available on-line. Here is one site that has them

In the summer my dogs go on a tie-out and once my Koda pulled so hard on his sanp collar that it just opened the snap. It didn't break it just opened! :rolleyes: So now I bye the buckle collars, much mroe efficent, I don't ever have to take them off, why would I need to?

I have had snap collars work so much better then metal buckle collars, my dogs can always get those off so easy and they little arm thingy constantly breaks, but we have yet to ever have a plastic buckle collar break plus they are much easier :) I use a brad of buckle collar called "bull" by the way, I find then to be very strong, and even I have a hard time undoing them lol

I will only use buckle collars on my two as i just do not trust the snap collars. Elvis wears a rolled leather collar and Clover has a nylon collar.
