I know for cats they have doors that only open if they have the right collar on, so maybe they could get one like that for the dog? I think it's some electronic signal or something that opens it if the signal is present or in the absence of the signal it won't open. I believe they make these for cat doors because other critters (such as raccoons) have been known to come and go through non-monitored doors. I think this would be the perfect solution, and I don't think they are all that expensive.
Good luck!:D

Great idea, Debbie!!! Oh Aly, this sounds like a very nice home for the boys..... how could they go wrong with names like Chance and Lucky???? :D

I've never heard of that collar, that is pretty neat.
Okay, I'll rethink my view if they have something like that.

Don't worry :)
I'm VERRRRRRRRRY picky about where my babies go. If it won't be a safe environment for them, they won't go there. I will do a home visit before they go over there and check the door out. I'll also talk to the men about possible options.
As a side note, I got an email from a woman who just lost her Bombay. She's very interested in either Magic or Merlin.
*sniff* My babies are all going to leave me :(

This is great news!!! Hopefully all of your fosters will find new loving homes very soon.:) Then you'll be able to foster more cats and kittens.:)

That would be great if Magic or Merlin found a furrever home! Maybe the lady might consider both to keep each other company????
Keeping our fingers crossed on that one.

These guys are GREAT!!!!!! They seem very responsible and I think this just may be the perfect home for Lucky and Chance! Here is a portion of the email he just sent me:
I have a pet door idea that I may have to invent if I can't find one already made. You probably know about the pet doors that only open if the animal is wearing a collar with the right radio frequency. These are a great idea for keeping other animals out, but the problem with trying to keep cats in is that the cats just learn to follow the dog out. What I'd like to find is one that comes with 2 types of transmitters-- one that opens the door, and one that locks it (where lock overrides open). You put
the open collar on the dog, and the lock collar on the cat. That way, if the cat is following the dog, the door won't open for either, but if the dog is at the door alone, it will open.

I think they may be ok IF they can be convinced to join PetTalk.
BTW I would know a guy here who could do a construction like this. Maybe they should ask whether they can give the problem to a class of electronics students:cool:
