Half of our cats wear collars, half wont tolerate them long enough to overcome the urge to rip them off. :)
As our cats go under anesthesia, I've been getting them microchipped. So far, Noah, Hermie, Samson and Phoebe are chipped. It hurts otherwise...that needle is huge! :eek:
None of my cats wear collars. They are all indoor only cats and Sunny, Cirrus, and Sky are microchipped. Cirrus and Sky came that way. Only Sky will try to go out sometimes but it only leads to a hallway and I live on the second floor so I have time to catch him before he goes any where.:)
Kylie doesn't wear a collar b/c she has sensitive skin due to her rodent's ulcer and the vet advised me not to have her wear one.
Her hair gets matted and and rubs raw open spots on her neck. I didn't realize this and when I took her collar off it had been growing into her neck and was infected. I cried b/c I thought I was trying to decapitate her. :(
So no collars for her!
How much is it to microchip? Is it worth for indoor cats?

Edward got a collar, the tearaway kind with the 'fastex' style
clip, along with a bell, so I could use my sonar to locate him at
night......
I put it on him and he found that he could hook his back claw in between the collar and his neck and SNAP.....the thing comes off...
After three times i said "forget it"......

I think it depends on how expensive your vet is and you can probably have it done at the Humane Society for less money. I think my current vet charges about $65.00 but I could be wrong. When I adopted Sunny almost 3 years ago, I think I paid between $35-45. I think it's well worth it for indoor cats. More places are using the scanners to detect microchips on lost pets.Quote:

8 of rthe 13 wear the Ova Collars , that are excellent flea protection. But they keep losing them , or tearing them off , and ruining them , and at 20 dollars a pop , there are two expensive to replace. They break them so they cant be put back on.

No collars here.
Our cats don't have collars (both indoor cats). But Tess has a tattoo with her ID no in her ear, and Costello has a microchip.
To get a chip here in Sweden costs 200 SKr (approx. 15 USD).
Mine have no collars. Every year I am at a loss as to what to do with their tags....;) IF they go outside into the fenced backyard, they wear a harness, with a bell, and a leash....
Nipo wears a break-away collar and is microchipped. The collar has a bell and a small tag with our phone number. She hasn't ever been able to figure out how to get her collar off, which is good. I don't feel like she is active enough to be likely to get in a situation where her collar will choke her but if it does happen I hope it will break away like it is supposed to! My greater concern is that one day she may get out of the house (she has been an indoor-outdoor cat in the past) and without a collar people would assume she is a stray and make no effort to take her to the Humane Society or find her guardians. We have a lot of stray and feral cats in Hawaii.
I realize I am taking some risk by having her wear a collar but I still feel I am doing what is best for my situation.
Chuck dosen't wear a collar. I am terrified that it will get hooked on something and he'll choke to death. Besides, he's strictly an indoor cat.
