I read that too that its only the chat part. I also recall that there were going to be one set of policies for the US, Canada, and Japan, and a different set for the rest of the world, having to do with how much MSN can monitor. Apparently the chat rooms have become a cheap and easy way to traffic kiddie porn and stalk children on the internet. :(
There has been a great uproar over on MSN about these changes, which ONLY affect the public chat rooms, not the group chatrooms, and most definitely not MSN Instant Messenger. Just hate to see another worrisome post here that doesn't have all the information.
There may come a time where you have to pay for all of these services, but not yet!!! :)
According to industry sources, the real reason why Microsoft is closing all chat rooms is to cut costs. Heaven forbid that for the first time in their history they are running a non-profitable operation.It sounds much better to look altruistic and "protect children." MSN is also loosing money and the time when they start charging for other services may not be too far away.

I have 3 friends going to college in Alaska & 1 going to college in Kentucky. We use the voice and video chat on MSN Messenger too keep in touch & keep the phone bills down :o
