My first two Golden Retrievers had Russian names, Natasha and Irina, because I read somewhere that the first Goldens came from Russian circus dogs plus Irish Setters, although I found out later that it was not true. However,it was nice to call them Grand Duchess Natasha and Grand Duchess Irina. They are both waiting for me at Rainbow Bridge.
The Golden I have now is called Carina, which means "little darling" in Italian. That was the name that came to my mind when I first saw her, she was six months old at the time. She is almost eight by now and the name could not fit her better. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

Carl's full name is Carl Ellis Love Sponge.
Let's start with Carl. That's after the 'Good Dog, Carl' books by Alexandra Day!
'Love Sponge', well, he sure is one. Just sponges up love! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif
'Ellis', that's the complicated part. Okay, The first letters of Love Sponge are "L" and "S" If you say those letters together you get "Ellis". So, that's my boy Carl Ellis Love Sponge!

Well, you guys already know the story of Little Orphan Annie (Annie or Nanners for short), my blue merle Aussie. Maxwell (Max or Bubba for short) just looked like a Max, and Sweetpea (@ the Bridge now) was a rescue dog, who was pure evil. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif Thought it would be funny to name her something that was the complete opposite of her personality.

Well, I'm not nearly as creative. Even before I got Cody I decided on the name.. Short and sweet, and I thought masculine. Then I read in a women's mag. that Kathy Lee Grifford named her son Cody and I thought that it really WAS a dogs name plus he really looked like a Cody. Am considering another dog and have chosen lots of names, and according to my vet, most of the names are already very popular. So, when the time comes, new name will definitely be "Logan" which I LOVE plus a tribute to my new friend who I adore.

I have to agree with that one Karin, Logan is a top name and a top friend!

While visiting our area shelters, making ourselves available to the dog looking for us, we came across a 10 month old Chow-Chow/Labrador mix. He was the portrait of mellow amidst the noise and chaos of the shelter. I had always gotten a chuckle from that old Johnny Cash song "A Boy Named Sue" about a deadbeat dad who names his son Sue before leaving him behind. You can read the lyrics here.
Sue's a pretty big dog, but he's nothing like the Sue of the song, other than the part about wressling in the mud and the blood and the beer. He will roll around with his buddy Gus for hours on end. The only other name we sometimes call him is "Sue-Baru". Partly because the Baru part sounds like a bark and partly because when it's time to hit the yard before bed I say, "Subaru Outback", and he gets the picture...

I am flattered that anyone would think to name their next dog, "Logan". I told Karen that there actually is a chocolate lab in my neighborhood with that name. Whenever they are walking with him (off leash), I'll hear them calling "Logan, Logan" and I want to say, "what?". I finally learned what to expect, so I don't try and answer all the time.

A friend of mine named his Collie "Lerrin" after the Cornish village the breeder lived in.
-
Too funny Logan!! "Logan, Stay!' "Logan, Come"! "Logan, NO"! Good thing you started ignoring them!!! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif Lerrin is great! I know people that named their dogs after where they live; Devon, Dresher, Denver (cities outside Phila). Don't think my next will be "Glenside" (where I live). Not by a long shot! Always liked Milo and Simon but they're real popular now. Nope, it's Logan for me!!! PS..Great name, says mom!

I named my aussie Golden Graham, because he has alot of spun gold in his hair, and because of his golden personality. I like the name Graham, and he really looks like a Graham. When I adopted him from the shelter his original name was Rufus...it really lowered his I.Q. in my opinion so I did something about that RIGHT AWAY!
My pug's name is Cassie (reg. AKC name is Cassendra Kay). I kept her name because she was 7 years old when I got her and she knew the name so well. I would call her Piglet if I could name her anything else.

Years ago we had a litter of labs - 5 yellow and 5 black. We kept two of the pups naming the black lab Thunder and the yellow lab Lightning. A few years later we got another yellow lab and named her Sunshine. Naturally when we got our kitten we had to name her Hurricane.
We couldn't think of a "weather" name when we got a new black lab pup last year, so we named him Duke. It just seemed to fit.

Growing up, we had "Freckles," a St. Bernard who had freckles a-plenty, on her nose and even on her puppy tummy!
The next dog in the family was the Great Dane mix Grace, so named because she had none! She would trip running across flat ground! The only unfortunate part of Gracie's name was that the teenager "Tracy" across the street didn't appeciate it much! That, and now any use of the word grace takes on a different meaning to me than to most. "Amazing Grace" anyone? http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

My dad named my dog Zorro because it was the only name we could all agree on. He is a black shepherd so hence the name. HOWEVER, I usually end up giving extra pet names and I call him from a distance "Zorri Babori Zorri Baboo" - boy does he get excited when he hears that! (yeah- I am abit silly :-) )

Dukiemom,
About the weather related names....my 2 oldest cats (14 and 13) are both completely grey. Their names are Misty and Foggy.

I have good friends who live in New Orleans and had named their cats Red Beans and Rice. Now they just need a dog that they can name Jambalaya!
