Warning:
The cracker are dryer than the Sahara Desert. Tasty, but dry. Dry, dry, dry. Did I mention dry?
REALLY good with the cheese spread or the jelly. Do not attempt with the peanut butter without a full canteen of water handy.
The bread, however, is pure evil.
Looks kinda like bread.
Good luck spreading anything on it.
Tastes like you're shewing a salt lick.
The Oatmeal cookie bars? I wasn't kidding earlier when I told Puck I broke a tooth on one.
I liked guys like LH who dug the crackers. Good trade bait for the pound cake. Or Jalapeno Cheese.
Tried to keep the peanut butter to make pudding with creamers and cocoa powder.
LOL @ the coffee. What combat arms soldier has time to actually boil water to make it? In a pinch, just eat it dry with water. When you have been awake for 36 hours and it will be 12 more until the passage of lines... You do what ya gotta do.
MRE's now and MUCH better then when I was a baby soldier in the early 90's. LH, did you know ANYbody who actually ate the omelete with ham? <barf>
Omelet with ham?
Nope. That meal had one destination......the bottom of a cathole.
Coffee? Heat tab, a canteen cup and about 3 minutes.
HOWEVER.....
On guard duty at 0 dark thirty just a pinch between your cheek and gum. a tablespoon of coffee powder was good for another hour or two without falling asleep on the '60.
Uh oh, I'm in trouble this week ... the only place I like to camp is at a luxury hotel ... sorry! You all have a great time and have a beanie weenie and a s'more for me, and I'll be at the hotel.

The little green pill is actually a packet of chiclets.
I swear the sole purpose of the chiclets is so you don't have a track full of troopies with dragon breath having a meeting.
My dad (RIP) was in the Army in the late '50s and he said the powdered eggs were the grossest thing ever on base. I wonder what he would have thought of MREs? Didn't those used to be called "Meals Rejected by Ethiopians?";)
As to the camping, fugeddaboutit! I used to camp when I was involved with SCA and didn't really like it.
There was a surplus store in the neighborhood and I would always go in to buy camping stuff when I needed it.
I came across a can of Date Nut Bread from a package of old C-rations, I picked one up as a joke and brought it home. (The can had a date on it-not an "Eat By" date....A date on when it was made......by the time I saw it? It was a FEW years old....)
After a few days of laughing and joking about it, I put the can opener to it and shared it out.
It was still good, very sweet and greasy. You could have put those out at some of the meeting I used to go to and that would have perked everyone up and kept them going for a few hours!:D

One spectaular thing about the new stuff is the stories of creativity - making 'gourmet' dishes out of different components - that some people talk about.
:D;)
Smores for everyone!
DONE!
