Is the anesthetic safe?Here at Cats Exclusive Veterinary Center we take several precautions to ensure the safety of your cat while under anesthesia. We do a thorough physical exam on your cat before administering anesthetics to ensure that there are no underlying illnesses. We use a pulse oximeter monitor during the anesthetic procedure which monitors your cat’s heart rate and respiratory rate. We also adjust the type of anesthetic used based on the health of your cat.
Pre-anesthetic blood testing is important in reducing the risk of anesthesia. Every cat needs bloods testing before surgery to ensure that the liver and the kidneys are functioning normally. Even apparently healthy cats can have serious organ system problems that cannot be detected without blood testing. If there is a problem, it is much better to find it before it causes anesthetic or surgical complications. If serious problems are detected, surgery can be postponed until the problem is corrected. Your doctor will tell you what blood panel is advised for your cat.

Will my cat have stitches?For many surgeries, we use absorbable sutures underneath the skin. These will dissolve on their own, and do not need to be removed later. Some surgeries do require skin stitches. With either type of suture, you will need to keep an eye on the incision for swelling or discharge. Most cats do not lick excessively or chew at the incision, but this is an occasional problem you will also need to watch for. If there are skin sutures, these will usually be removed 10-14 days after surgery. You will also need to limit your cat’s activity level for the first 5-10 days after surgery.
Will my cat be in pain?Anything that causes pain in people can be expected to cause pain in cats. Pain medications needed will depend on the surgery performed. Major procedures require more pain relief than things like minor lacerations.
Cats cannot tolerate pain medications (aspirin, Tylenol, ibuprofen) commonly used in people. Recent advances in pain medications have allowed for better pain control in cats than ever before. We administer pain medication before and after surgery. Any cat that appears to be in pain will receive additional pain medication. Providing pain relief is appropriate and is a humane and caring thing to do for your cat.
What other decisions do I need to make?While your cat is under anesthesia, it is the ideal time to perform other minor procedures, such as dentistry, ear cleaning, or implanting an identification microchip. If you would like an estimate for these extra services, please call ahead of time. This is especially important if the person admitting the cat for surgery is not the primary decision maker for the cat’s care.
What appointments are needed?
When you bring your cat in for surgery, we ask that you allow 15 minutes of time to fill out paperwork and to meet with a nurse. We will schedule a discharge appointment so that we can go over your cat’s home care needs after the surgery.
We will call you the night before your scheduled surgery appointment, to confirm the time you will be admitting your cat and to answer any questions you might have. In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to call us with any questions about your cat’s health or surgery.

I TAKE UP ALL THE FOOD SO THE CAT WHOS GOING TO THE VET CANT EAT ANYTHING. IN JOSEPHS CASE I DONT PUT OUT CANNED FOOD AS HIS GUMS ARE TOO SORE TO EAT THE DRY.
I THINK FISTER WILL BE ALL RIGHT AS THE VETS HAVE THIS PROCEDURE DOWN PAT, AND FISTER WILL FEEL MUCH BETTER WHEN THE SORE TEETH ARE ALL GONE.

Don't worry, Randi. My nephew's cat lost ALL his teeth last year; 2 days after surgery, he was already eating dry food, as if he still had his teeth.
The last time Ripley had his teeth cleaned he was 11 years old. They told me no food or water after midnight. On first attempt they wouldn't do it because his kidney levels were too high (the first sign we had of his kidney failure) but we tried again a month later and that time they told me to let him drink water if he wanted so when they ran the blood work to check his kidney's his levels were better even though still elevated. They went ahead with the cleaning but made it quick so he wouldn't be under long and all went well.

Fister will do fine. Monte had a dental recently, at almost 14 years of age.

I'm not sure you'll see this post because I'm rather late responding:rolleyes: however, Eve too had anesthesia for her dental procedure and she was fine:) I can't see that leaving water for Fister would be a problem as hydration is very important to the process.
Your concerns are valid and I don't blame you a bit for fretting - in fact I'm fretting with you:love: Fister is a doll baby and we all want him to be good as new when he comes home:D

I recently had Ozzy's teeth cleaned, and he is 15 yo. There was no problem with putting him under and he did just fine. He also drank water the night before the surgery.
My biggest problem was that everyone was also "deprived" of food the night before the surgery, so I had some very unhappy campers :rolleyes:
Fister will do just fine with this and he will be ready for some shrimp tomorrow night for his treat!
Get well soon. I am sure you will be fine. And if you are having tooth problems, it should be a bit of a relief to have them out.
Juni is going back to the vet in a few weeks, to have one extraction and the rest scaled...cleaned......We still haven't figured out how to pill her..... Since Juni is such a sleek and tiny girl, the vet wants her fluids up before she comes home.....

Randi, please try not to worry. My Storm just had his teeth cleaned and 2 of his upper tiny teeth were loose so they were removed. He's almost 12 1/2 years old and he did fine. There are different kinds of anesthesia and it said that Storm did well with induction with propofol,maintenance with isoflurane, and buprenex injection for pain control in the hospital. I'm sure that Fister will do fine and I'll keep him in my thoughts and prayers.:)
