Interesting topic! :) shais_mom is right in that the greyhound is the only breed of dog mentioned in the bible. It is believed to have been depicted in early cave drawings traced as far back as 8000 years, and is a decendent of the dogs depicted and worshiped by the ancient Egyptions. Also, in old England, the greyhound was owned only by the nobility and was used in the sport of coursing. The sight hounds (Saluki's, greyhounds, and pharoah hounds) are amongst the oldest breed of dog :) Cool, huh? :cool:

I think that the Greyhound is the most classic dog.

Daisy's Mom...A collie is the first dog that came into my mind too. When I was a little girl Lassie was my favorite TV Show. We all grew up watching Lassie and hoping that our dogs would be brave enough to save us from all of those life-threatening scenarios that Lassie handled so bravely!

*LabLoverKEB* what source are you using for your numbers? I am getting a different date, if you read my earlier post. I am refering to the Dorling Kindersley Handbook of Dogs by David Alderton.

From a handbook referring to the Tibetan Spaniel breed:
'Tibetan Spaniel dogs can be found on bronzes dating back to the Shang Dynasty in 1100 BC'
So they date back to 1000 years before the birth of Christ. :eek:

I would also say that pugs are a classic breed, I believe that they were bred in China for many years.

Dachshunds- 1900's
Airedale Terrier- 1800's
Pugs- Antiquinty

My reference gives the 1500s as the date for pugs. The Pekinese, who were the "exclusive possesion" of the Chinese emperor until 1860, have an origin date of the 100s.

The Greyhound, it says, dates all the way back to 3000 BC - there are representations of them on Egyptian tombs from way back then.

The Sloughi, a dog I am not very familiar with, has the oldest origin date I can find on a quick flip through my book - 6000 bc!

No offense, but I like my book better - "antiquity" doesn't mean much - just that they didn't bother to look very hard if it was an older breed. I think it's very interesting that pugs and pekinese have such different origin dates - 1500s and 100s, respectively, when I would have guessed that they would be about the same age!

Where is the Grey hound listed in the bible? I never knew that! interesting!
