For me i could only have 6 pets. Two or three of the six would be bettas. At the moment I can take care of 2 cats and 1 betta great. No problem.I am already planning another betta. The Betta Bug has bitten.I would someday in the far future like to have a horse. But right know 2 cats and 2 or so bettas will be it at this time. :)

Money keeps me at the numbers we have now. I know as soon as finances get better I'll be adding a puppy. No question about that one. But until my job picks up, we're still at 5 cats, 1 dog, and a betta. :)
If I had a bigger hosue, and maybe someone else willing to help keep the cats brushed and the house vacuumed I'd probably add a few more tabbies to my collection too ;)

2-3 dogs would be it for me. I don't have the funds to care for them. Gosh if I did then sure I could take great care of 3 dogs. I can handle 3 very well trained dogs but right now we live in a smaller house where one more dog would be it. If we move we can get another dog. So I am hoping that we will. Small like another shih-tzu but yeah. If not dogs, then smaller pets like guinea pigs or hamsters but yeah......

If you can't afford their upkeep, ONE is too many!!

i believe you can have too many pets. fortinatly i havn't hit my "too many" mark yet. ;) you should be able to provide vet care, space, and equal love and attention to each pet.if you can't than you have too many pets.
a couple my mom use to work for have 27 cats and 12 dogs. they do have the space and the vet care, but not the attention. they have too many pets!

I agree, it depends on the person and how much money they have and if they can properly care for them all. At my mom's I would not want more then two dogs, unless we lived in the country. But we don't so 2 dogs is enough. At my dad's we've got about 200 animals, and we have the money and time to properly care for them. My dad feeds them in the morning, goes to work, comes home and feeds them. Then he works with Dreamer, plays with the buns, and works on building our pheasant house. It all takes alot of time and money, but as long as you have that, I think you can have as many pets as you can care for.

How many can you financially and physically take care of? Can you meet their physical and emotional needs? How will you pay a huge vet bill? Got a plan for other emergencies--theirs or your own? Are there pet limits where you live? How many times can you stand to get your heart broken??
I have 32 pets right now--23 dogs, 9 cats. I'm financially stable, have lots of room both in my house and outside. I have a great vet, a savings account that is only for vet expenses and a paid-off credit card that I only use in the event of a major unexpected vet bill. I can afford their food(and have room to store a ton of dog food at a time, I buy full pallets at a time), their treats, toys, ect. I have a secure job that allows me to flex my time if needed to make vet appointments or care for my animals. I have an emergency evacuation plan if I have to get them all out in one trip. I have a plan for the event that I can't care for them. I have a routine for meeting their needs(cleaning, watering, feeding, exercise). I have a hubby who will help if I need him to and who builds a fine fence!

my parents say our home has gone overboard with pets and we have a unobtrussive lizard, gerbil, a rabbit, and a dog, and my calf lives a few miles away at a perk district owned farm. They said a horse would be fine if I could afford it because he'd obviously live away from home. I can see myself having a several more dogs and a horse in the future.
