My dwarf is a male, and he has the least smell of all my rodents. Then again, I use carefresh, and clean his cage every week. I don't even notice a smell with him.
The female Syrian hamster we've been babysitting for over a month now stays in the office (no other animals in here), and even my mum, who has a very sensitive nose, says that the hamster barely has a smell to it.
Alot also has to do with the bedding used. Many people, including myself, find Carefresh to work wonders when cutting the smell back. Rats (males especially) tend to have a horrid smell. People who come to our house don't even acknowledge that we have any rodents untill they actually go into my room and see the cages. And even then, they are surprised that my room doesn't even have an odor to it.
So, the type of bedding helps alot.

Carefresh is REALLY good, it just claims to be "dust free" and anyone who has ever used it will know... it is DEFINITELY NOT dust free.. that stuff has sooo much dust.. its ridiculous! And you are not supposed to use bedding with dust on small animals because it will give them respitory problems..
The COLORED carefresh though is virtually dust free. But the regular stuff.. is awful.
