For what it's worth, I've been having this laptop for about a year and a half and everything still runs like new. I could not be happier with it, and I know that the middle-of-the-liners run about 600-800$ if you stick with the basics.
If I were you, I'd be more than happy to return that ol' rental laptop and buy yourself a new one ;) Dell does offer monthly payment plans, and if you stick with the basics (you'll probably only need the bare basics), it costs about 15-20$ a month or cheaper (I think...).
