If I remember correctly, Menominee was the name of a major Native American Tribe of the Upper Midwest. It is a fairly common place name and I believe there is even a reservation/casino of the Menominee Tribe.

Although UofW - Madison is still liberal (for the Midwest anyway) the only thing I can imagine causing a disruption on campus would be if the Student Union ran out of beer! (I was so surprised to find a beer hall there!)
(Fun story -- guy I used to date is still there in Madison. We met in Arizona. Last week I had a call from a salesman -- his brother! Small world. )
This bomber sounds like a sad guy who went to a pretty small school and lived a pretty small life. He flipped out. His friends and roommates helped the FBI find him so there doesn't appear to be a conspiracy or terrorist group. Just one sad, sick guy.

Yup, the suspected bomber did attend one of the University of Wisconsin schools. The campus is in Menomonie, and is called University of Wisconsin-Stout. I attended the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, which is near there. Both schools have excellent reputations, and are definitely NOT known for their dissidents. In fact, several of the U of Wisc. campuses are known for being superior values in education in this day of enormous tuitions and questionable faculty quality. Between the good education and the beautiful countryside, Wisconsin has lots to offer.
Besides, they have great cheese!
