Few weeks ago - anudder Huntin Trip ~
We all walked down ta get da mail ...
All three uv us <SAT> (well, Bowz <STOOD>) whilst Dad krossed da road
ta do da fetch outta da box.
Onna way back to da Howze, we all "de-toured" ober by da pond an
Dad got closer to da howz than we wuz... He called "Here, Guyz!".
Ebberbuddie <STARTED> ta "come" - till Bowz started <lookin> at Dad
an den ober atta WOODZ across da road...
Old Habbitz must be hard ta break ...
Da Urge ta HUNT gotz da best of ole Bowz ...
He headed fur da Road anna Woodz - Dad <Hollered> - Bowz stopped an
sorta came back ... Dad walked towardz him - <callin> ...
Bowzie <flipped & flopped> tween "come" an "go" ...
"Go Huntin" won out - Zippity-*ZOOM* an da ole Boy wuz across
da road an lookin fur "game" inna woodz!
Me (Cinnerz) an Dad started out onna footz - walkin an callin tween da
road anna woodz ... nuffin!
Dad sed "NUTZ!" (well he sed a few NAW-Tee wurdz, too) an we headed
back ta get da Bus fur a mo-bile search.
On Da Road Agin!
Onlee gotz a kupple howzes down an stopped ta <holler> -
Dad looked inna Lookin-Back glass an SEEZ da Bowz run across da
road aftur da Bus! Da lil Turkie wuz already back on OUR sidda da road!
Dad hopped out an opened da back door .. "C-mon, Bowz - HOPP IN!"
Course he hadda *pee* onna telly-pole an danze around a bit;
but he DID hopp rite in!
We took a lil *spin* around da block ta keep Bowzie thinkin da Bus
izza *Phunn Place* ta be ...
Dad wuz trying ta say "Happie - Gud Boy'z" tween <klenched toofiez>!
Dad ses he learned anudder Lessin - ta <WATCH> da SunBall!
It wuz jest gettin towardz "dusk" - dat must be da Bow'z most
Favorite Tyme ta GO Huntin!
Durrin DAY-lite, Bowz duz his outiez free azza Burd wiff us -
an <stayz> inna yard;
"dusk" an "dark" - he'z onna leash or da tether!
-------
An we had a kuppla "Ax-kadentz" inna howze!
Dunno when da furst wun happened - Bowsz usually stickz purdy KLOZE
ta Dad (he's a reel Velcro Dawg) - mitta been durrin da nite.
We woke up a week or two ago an wuz headed fur da frunt door fur an
outie when Bowzie trotted inna live/dine room an jest <hiked> a leg an
 didda *PEE* onna rug sukker parked onna toss-rug!
OMG! Da <HOLLERIN> dat went on!
Bowzie got a <Fast Klip> to da tether an <BOOTED> out da door!
We heard Dad *fussin* an *HOLLERIN* fur a Long Tyme.
Durin Kleen-Up he found da FURST "Wet Spot" rite asside da
"fresh wun" - MORE *HOLLERIN*!!
Hazzint been anudder "wet spot" fur a long tyme;
but Dad <klipz> Bowz to ta BigBed foot (when he 'memburz ta do it)
in order ta reduce da "temp-tashinz" for Bowz ta wander at nite.
An Bowzie iz "en-kouraged" to "Stay OUTTA da waddur bowl!" aftur 9 PM!
------------------------
Dad keepz thinkin da Bowzer Boy has FINALLY learned to <SIT>!
(It'z *whishfull thinkin*, we think!)
Since he bekame a TREET-FREEK, Dad "in-sistz" he <SIT> to get a treet!
<SIT!>, Bowz! (Treet bein held rite in fronta hiz noze)
<BLANK STARE> frumma Bowz, Tail <wavin> like a flag inna wind.
<SIT>!, Bowz! (Continued Blank Stare, Tail <wavin>)
Now da "Approved by Dawggie Skewel" method of "encouragin" a <SIT>
iz ta reach down an under da rear end an <push forward> onna KNEE jointz -
which <foldz up> da rear legz - Dawg "hazta <SIT>!"
Well, iffin ya 'member, da Bowz izza bit "short inna legz" -
which means fur Dad ta be able to "reach under" he hazta get DOWN
onna floor ta have enuff arm ta almost touch da floor az he <sweeps>
unner Bowzie's rear end an tries t <find> da knee jointz!
Dad found a New Way - "Dad Approved"!
Since Bowz has a BUNCHA FURR - which sorta "standz up" stedda
layin down flat - it makes a Great "HANDLE" back there onna RUMP ~
So NOW da <SIT> Drill goez sumpin like diss ...
Step 1:
"<SIT!>, Bowz" - alluz followed by da <Blank Stare>,
<wavin> Tail, an All Four firmly planted inna purfikt <STAND>!
Step 2:
Dad attachez left hand-paw to a paw-full of Bowzie Rear-End FLUFF,
and gently <pullz> Back & Down ...
Step 3:
<*PLOP*> an Bowzie folds up into a PURR-fikt <SIT> ebery tyme!
(Fluffie Tail eben pickz up a lil speed!)
Step 4:
"GOOD <SIT>, Bowz!!" (Treet presented an <Gobbled>!)
Step 5:
Firm Grip <released> on Rear-End Fluff ...
Step 6:
(mid gobble) - the Rear-End <springs> back up to a <STAND> pozition!
Step 7:
Dad = :rolleyes:
Da SKORE??
In 4 months, an about a THOUZAND <SIT> Drills -
aktual <SIT>z wiffout "assistance" = THREE
"Assisted <SIT>z" = 997!
An dont tell Dad - but doze THREE "successful <SIT>z" are "suspect" ...
Bowzie izint a big "Jumper" - not verry oftin duz he <jump> up or
eben <reach up> wiffa frunt pawz - "4 onna Floor" iz fine wiff him!
BUTT ~
Ebery Wunst inna while he getz all wound up an triez ta immytate
us Big Dawgz doin our <SIT> - <BEG> - <Shake> an <KISS> drill
dat WE hafta do da get a Louzie Bisquit ...
He sorta duz a lil <jump> ta get da Frunt End UP fur da <BEG> part;
anna Back End kinda KO-lapsez inta a sorta <SIT> ~
then he sorta <stays> there, thinkin he Dun da Trick!
Well ... Dear ole Dad jest goze *BALLISTIK wiff JOY*!!
"He DUN it!! ~ He <SAT>!! ~ GUD <SIT>, Bowz!! ~ Have anudder treet!"
GUD GRIEF!
Ya'd think he Wun da Lottery!
Stay Tuned ~
We'z purdy sure there'll be More Bowser Tailz ta come!
..
:D :D Good to see another Bowzie tail! I was going through withdrawl!!!
I bet he learns to sit someday! Just you wait!
Bowzie, no more hunting trips, ok? The weeds in the woods will be getting tall and wif your short legs, you might not be able to see where you are going.:D
I've missed Bowzie tails too! Phred, there is an easier way to teach the sit command without pushing on the dogs rump. Try this...
Induce the sit by holding a tidbit between your index and middle finger in front of Bowsers nose. Slowly move it above and behind his head (just above his head - not too high), luring him into a sit position. Click (if you use clicker training) or praise and immediately reinforce him with the tidbit when he sits.
Repeat this several times until he sits smoothly and quickly when lured into position. Then, start giving the sit command just prior to inducing the sit. I always shape the behavior before putting a verbal command to it. It's less confusing to the dog.
Keep those Bowzie stories coming! :D
:rolleyes:Quote:

:p
I read that book, too, Candy! ;)
But so did Bowser!
HIS Edition must have had an extra Chapter -
"How to NOT *fall* fur da Treet Trick!"
He can turn himself into a PRETZEL *watchin* the treat pass over his head!
"Not Too High" ~ I can RUB it tween his eyes and ears -
and he NEVER *stumbles* a bit!
Smooth as Silk - he'll look UP till his head won't GO any more UP -
then a quick TURN to keep the ole Treet IN Sight ...
But <SIT> ??
Maybe I could try tying a rope around his back knees -
a lil <tug> onna ropey from the front ....
Aw heck; who needs Anudder Dawg that can <SIT>?
I already GOT Two that can do THAT Trick!
/s/  Phred
When he was REALLY little (probably a month after they got him), I tried to teach him to "say his prayers" (from a sit put his front feet on the porch steps, and duck his head between his front paws). Out of 1000 tries, how many times did he do it unassisted? ONCE!
I feel your pain! :D
Poor Bowsey...don't they know tricks are for kids? (or is that Trix that are for kids?)
Glad to hear things are still going well with the Boswer boy....the urge to hunt may still be there...but he sure knows where "home" is!
Ya a new bowser story. Hey what happened to the other find. I was gone for a week ,did you find a home for him?
:DQuote:

1,001th Try ...
HE DID IT Again!! :)
I had JUST finished my Tongue-in-cheek reply to Candy when
I let The Gang in from the front porch.
Cinder: (silently) <SAT> - <BEG> - <SHAKE> - <Took It> (gently)
Smokey: (silently) <SAT> - <BEG> - <SHAKE> - <Took It> (gently)
BoZo : (silently) Shown the Bisquit: <Blank Stare> (STANDING) ...
Thinking of Candy's Instructions, I followed them to the LETTER:
(silently) <Showed the Bisquit> - eye/nose level, 6" away ...
(slowly) <Brought Bisquit UP, Over nose, Across bridge of nose,
UP between eyes, [thought his eyeballs were gonna *bump* into each other],
Between the ears ...
And IT Happened > <*BOINK*> and DOWN went his furry lil BUTT -
Perfikt <SIT> Number 4!!
WHUT da HECK!???
I gotta "Think Candy" every time I want him to <SIT> ??
WHUTever werks!
I lavished "GUD <SIT>, Bowz" with "pats onna head" so much
The Other Two came back to see what the FUSS was about.
We're Onna ROLL - let's do it again whilst he's "Inna Mood" ...
MORE BISQUITS - ALL Around!!
Cinder and SmokeMutt <won> theirs in the Blink of an Eye and wandered off;
You're UP, Bowz!!
"Thinkin Candy" - I repeated the Successful Method ...
(siently) <Show the Goods> <Approach the Nose> <UP & Over> (slowly) ...
And PRETZEL Boy did his best <Follow the Bisquit while STANDING>
routine he's done in a long time.
Here, TAKE the dang Bisquit! :p
----------------------------------------
Hey, 4 out of 1,002 is a LOT better than the old 3 out of 1,000! ;)
Maybe I wasn't "Thinkin Candy" quite rite?
/s/  Phred
..
Knowing that Bowser and I are in relatively the same age bracket, I'm thinking that the reluctance to *sit* may not be so much being obstinate as maybe a case of certain parts not bending as easily as they should any more. (Ahhem, seems like Dad would know a bit about that sort of thing too.) Maybe all those treats could be used to perfect *stay* and *come*.
Excellent point Rachel. My good ol' boy Badger is getting up there as well and has a very hard time with "sit" even though he's always been the first to listen and please. He simply has problems getting the old bones and joints to listen to his ears these days :(
What I don't understand is how you get around those soft brown eyes of his?
If it were me, I would end up just giving him the bisquit and forget doing any special tricks.
His eyes are heart melters!
;)
Thanks for your thoughts, Hannah!
And yeah, "Dad" KNOWS!
He Can and Does <SIT> whenever HE wants to!Quote:

It's a favorite position when he desires a "pat onna head" and I'm
at the puter - he'll walk up beside the chair and just <SIT>,
then give me an "elbow bump" to tell me he's arrived.
It appears a "MODIFIED 'Candy' Method" gives a good <SIT>!
The word <SIT> seems to have no meaning - he IS <focused> on
Cinder & Smoke getting Their Bisquits, and focuses his attention
upon the THIRD Bisquit quite intently!
As previously reported, passing the Bisquit up to and then over his
nose and head usually produces a neck-bending exercise where he
displays his neck & head FLEXIBILITY; the rear end remaining in the
UPright posture!
What DOES Work is to <pass> the Bisquit up & over ONE time, ~
then "CIRCLE & HOVER" the Bisquit OVER his head!
He seems to realize the sought-after treat IS "UP There" (somewhere)
and tries to flip-flop his head to focus in on it -
difficult with a fast-moving, circling target! ... His "solution" ??
He just leans back on his haunches and <*PLOPS*> back into a <SIT> -
which opens up more of the "sky" and brings the Circling Bisquit
back into view!
<COME> ??
He <COMES> when it's OK with HIM! - Meals, treats, attention, etc.
He <GOES> when he feels like it! ... Bisquit-in-hand or not; when
HE decides to explore or just go-the-other-way -
a Busquit isn't enough to turn him around! :p
<STAY> ??
Needs sum werk!
We're actually werkin on <WAIT> at doors ...
He tries to be FURST Out rather than in his assigned #3 position
behind #2, SmokeMutt.
He barges to the front of the line and jams his head out as soon as
the door is cracked.
A gentle closing of the door results in his head out, and shoulders
jammed up in the too-narrow opening.
After he quits <pushing> forward and has to stand trapped for a few
seconds, he's more than willing to <Back Up> and let Cinder go.
He HAS "caught on" to a LOT of the Howze Rules ...
He's #3 in the Chow Line; and DON'T stick yur head into #1 or #2's BOWLS!
DON'T LAY close behind da Bus Driver's puter chair - he backs up often
and there's NO Back-Up Alarm on the darn thing!
Fire Calls - Stay OUTTA da Way!!
Cinder & Smokey can recognise "OUR" Fire Alert Tones on the radios -
When they hear "OUR" tones, they both move away from shoes, clothes,
and the basement door; and KNOW they aren't "going"!
Bowsie can't tell the difference between "OUR" tones and the other
Departments' tones - but he HAS started to <move> when he hears
ANY tones on the fire radios!
DON'T *MESS* wiffa Black KAT!!
Probably comes from his years with MidNight, but he has NEVER
done anything to <bother> Boots! (Other than just BEING here!)
Bowz hardly <looks> at Boots if the pass in the house; and Boots now
"allows" him to enter the Baffroom without even a (silent) "Hisss!"
Nail Trimming ??
NOT a problem with Bowz!
The "other" members of The Gang should be half as good as he is!
His HEARING ??
I think it works just FINE! - Very "SELECTIVE" - but always "operational"!
He comes out of a SOUND sleep at the sounds of:
* The Bisquit storage cabinet opening
* The Krunchie Can storage closet opening
* A (whispered) "Wanna EAT?"
* Fire Tones over the radio
Maybe instead of <COME> I should try "<Wanna EAT>". :p
"Pecking Order" ??
Well, he's "Only #3" - but Cinder & Smokey NEVER <pull rank> on him! :)
Cinder "Rules Her Pack" with a Very Soft Paw ~
and allows both Smokey and the Bowz to do just about ANYthig they
want to, whenever they want to!
It's a pretty  & *mellow* Gang of Three,
wiffa KAT tossed in for Variety! :)
Bowser Boy IS a Goof-Ball - but he slid in without much fuss!
:D
..
You may be on to something there!Quote:

I just yell, TUNA!!!! then stand back so I won't get trompled to death. Of course, they ARE cats!
Good luck! Sounds like Bowzie is gettin there in his own time!:D
:o Actually it was Mom Rachel who did that post. Hannah, like Bowser, seems to be much more flexible in this *age bracket* than her mom is.Quote:

Good on Bowser for fitting in so well. Those *life style choices* may take a little while to change up some. Like Hannah, Bowser seems to be self directed. (Actually I wouldn't want her any other way.)

Ya know what I say, Phred.... If it works, use it! ;) Fortunately, in dog training, there is no one way fits all. It's the INTELLIGENT owner who can modify a basic method and make it work for their dog! :) Sounds like you did that flawlessly.
The main reason I don't put a verbal command to a behavior until a hand motion is taught is for the reason you stated... The word <SIT> seems to have no meaning. Repetition is the key! After the behavior is shaped, then a word is associated with it. A few <THOUSAND> more "modified Candy methods" and I'd say Bowser Boy will have it down <PAT>! ;)
I melt for Bowser eyes too! More pictures of the Dynamic Trio, please, Phred!
:)
Dad sez he'z created a Treet-Monstur! :p
Wunst upon a Tyme ya couldn'd <FORCE> a tree into Bowzie's mouff ...
NOW Dad hazta <watch> his Finnerz when he's lettin us inna frunt door -
Iffin he Dillie-Dalliez a sekond too long ... da Bowz iz <JUMPIN> up
nibblin at da treetz inna hand-paw!
An now he'z decided KARRUTZ are A-OK fur nibblin on!!
Dad like ta <munch> on Babee Karrutz (dipped in UnYin Dip!)
Whenebber he breaks out da Karrutz an Dip, da KAT bout breaks a leg
jumping ober da tabilz an chairs to sit onna Kliner Chair Arm an <beg>
fur UnYin Dip! Iffin he duzint get ta <LICK> da Dip offa karrut every
two or three *dipz* - he <dunkz> a furrie Paw inna Dip Buckit
an haz a fine tyme <lickin> da Paw!
Us Dawgs sit at Dad'z feetz and <beg> fur da Karrut Tailz aftur Dad
<munches> off the long end wiffa Dip onnit ...
Uzed to go like diss:
<Dip> <Munch>; "Tail" to Cinder ...
<Dip> <Munch>; "Tail" to Smokey ...
<Dip> ... "Tap onna Arm" by da KAT; <LICK> by da Kat;
<RE-Dip> <Munch>; "Tail" to Bowz ... *pa-TooWee* anna
karrut tail gotz <spit> out onna floor ...
<GRAB & Munch> da reject by wunna us

Tons more fun than the ice skating done in the winter!:D
There's a few dogs on your side at this place, Bowser. None of mine are swimmers! They would think Smokey and Cinder were as nutty as fruit cakes jumping in the water on purpose!
Bowser, Sadie and Cincy are quite jealous...they got to stand around int he kiddie pool at home (well, Sadie lays down and enjoys the water!). Spot is our dry-land boy. He definately does not like to swim!!!
You have 2 more here Newfies who don't swim . They wade around on their pool and drink thats all.
Awww!! Bowser, its really not that bad!!!! My 5 aren't too impressed with the water thing either...
Hey Bowser, I see you got yourself computer access. Way to go!
It must be a bit tough trying to live up to the standards of those athletic types like Cinder and Smoke. I guess hunting is more your thing, huh? Somehow doesn't seem like the head honcho appreciates those activities on your part. Well, anyway I'm glad to hear that you did your part in going along with the game plan on the recent outing.
I hope this weekend will find you having some special activities as well. Keep your eyes pealed for a Dairy Queen and make a special request for da bus to pull in there. Tell the bus driver you know someone who will glady reimburse for treats all around.
Didcha ya'll see Bowser has COMPANY for the weekend???

How did the week end guest go?
Any chance of a Bowser update?
How is his summer going?
Does he like to swim yet?
Does he still sneak off to hunt?
Inquiring minds (well mine anyway) want to know! :D :D

Glad to hear the country hunts are no fun anymore.
