Late in reading this thread/posting this but actually, Xmas isn't meant to be an offensive term.

Hence 'Xmas' is indeed perfectly legitimate abbreviation for the word 'Christmas' (just as 'Xian' is also sometimes used as an abbreviation of the word 'Christian')."
I had heard this before at Church but had to look it up to explain it (
