Scary collar!

Something scary happened to Jasmine yesterday with her new collar! I bought a lovely pink collar for my princess and tried to put it on Jasmine's neck Saturday. She did not like it so much. I first removed the bell but she still wanted to get rid off the collar. So for the night I decided to remove it and put it back on her neck the next morning. She tried a bit to remove it, but not so hard and it seemed she started getting used to it. She had it the whole Sunday night and Monday.
When my partner came home after work on Monday evening, Jasmine was looking at him with her mouth open. After taking a closer look my partner saw that Jasmine has the collar in her mouth, like the bit of a horse, and she could not close her jaw!!! :eek: :eek: Of course he tried to catch her, but she ran all around the house (she was playing :rolleyes: ). He finally caught her and removed the collar completely. How scary !!! How could this happen :confused: May be the collar was not tight enough around her neck and she could pass her jaw in it to get rid of it, but poor girl! It probably just happened because there was no saliva on her face (I guess after some time there would be a lot of saliva if she could not close her mouth) but what if this would have happened in the morning :( By shaking her head hard the collar may have been released, but I am not sure she is strong enough to open it!

Jamsine is fine now, right after the adventure she ate and played as usual.

Yup.... thats why Pouncer does not wear a collar. Thats why I decided not to even try to make Harry and Abby wear collars when we got them. After a whike, I thought it was pretty silly that Allen wore his (and he's the only one of the group who I completely trust to not wander away!)

Aww, scritchies to baby Jasmine! Cat's certainly can injure themselves with collars and I'm glad Jasmine's experience didn't upset her too much.

I used to put Ova Collars on the Cats for Flea Prevention but they kept losing them,and at Twenty Dollars apiece I couldnt afford them.
We are glad that Your Kitty is unhurt,and none worse the wear for her bad collar experience

Don Juan and Zerlina both wear Safe Cat(TM) collars, which have a pull-apart clasp. Zerlina has managed to remove hers a few times, so I know they're OK.

Poor kitty. I hope she's okay. Perhaps you can try break-away collars? If the cat trys to take it off or it gets caught on something, it just unsnaps. This prevents hanging or chocking. Just a thought.

It is exactly the kind of collar I chose! Even more scary, isnt' it? But you need to pull quite hard (well, not for a human, but for a little cat, I think) to open it! :(

Jasmine has a chip, but I wanted to put her a collar and may be also a medal because the chip is not visible and if she is lost (there is no reason for it but we never know) people will know she belongs to someone. Microchips are not very common in France so I am not sure everyone will have the reflex to check for it. In the Netherlands where I adopted Jasmine, the chips are put on every cat or dog to be adopted, so everyone knows that if he finds an animal he can go to a vet and find the owner.

Halo did the same thing once. Her color is bright red. I caught sight of her out of the corner of my eye and thought blood was coming out of her mouth. :eek: I had a heck of a time catching her and getting the collar free. But, since we changed to a break away collar this has not happened again. Halo is a very strong, sturdy cat so maybe that's why it breaks away easier for her.

I know how scarey it can be, seeing the kitty with the collar in the wrong place.

One of my cats had her paw and leg up in the neck area one day when I came home from work. I don't recall which cat it was, but that was the last time I ever put a collar on an inside cat.

Another time, I too, had a cat with the collar around her face and in her mouth.

I have heard of cats catching their collars on trees etc. that is why they have breakaway collars for cats. I guess when this was happening to me I didn't have breakaway collars on my cats.

They also have learned how to get rid of the breakaway collars....never to be found again....oh, and that includes an E-collar too. I have yet to find it. I think maybe Juni ate the E-collar. Just kidding.

I only put collars on my cats when they travel, incase they escape somehow. Now that I have four, I won't be travelling with them all! So no collars in this house.

Thanks for your comments, it's useful. I think I will use a collar only when we travel. Or may be I'll try again, but only when I am at home, to see if she gets used to the collar.

I never thought this could happen. Peppito had flea collars for years and he has never tried to get rid of them! Perhaps Jasmine is just too playful right now and thinks it is a new toy :rolleyes:

Lisa, Jasmine's daddy had the same reaction as you had, he first thought it was her tongue but did not understand why Jasmine had her tongue out of her mouth while looking at him :eek:

How scary, Sonia! My little one Snoopy is also wearing a collar (with an elastic part). It is really necessary for her, even as an indoor cat! She never answers when I call her (deaf :confused: ), so the little bell around her neck tells me where to look for our little devil :D

That must have been scary. Too bad, pink really looks good on Jasmine!

My dog acctually does that with her collar sometimes.

That is why I have chosen not to put collars on my cats. That happened with my cat Zasper, only I was not home to save her. She had a breakaway collar but I guess it did not work properly, I think I will always blame myself for her loss.
