Veteran's Day Salute
To all veterans past, present, and future... thank you.
And a special salute to my grandpa.
He was a World War II veteran. A Navy man, his speciality was salvage diving.
Remember that movie Cuba Gooding Jr. was in? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0203019/
Yep. That's what grandpa did.

He was stationed at Pearl Harbor for a period of time. Then was transferred from one ship to another and sent out to sea. A few days later Pearl Harbor was bombed. He lost a lot of friends and to his dying day never talked about it.
When grandpa retired from the Navy he joined the Lansing Police Department.
He arrested Dad once. Long before Dad knew my Mom. Still tease Dad about it to this day.
Grandpa was an awesome man. I'm so lucky to have known such a great person. He passed away April of 2002. My only regret is that Andy never got to meet him.
Thanks for my first beer grandpa.

I toast you now. I miss you so much.

Oh Kim, what a wonderful man your Grampa must have been. November 11th always has me choked up.
Today even though it's raining, I will attend the parade and ceremony at the cenotaph. It's the least I can do for all the veterans who have fought for my freedom.
To those of you who have lost family members, I send you prayers. To those of you who have family members overseas now, I pray for their safe return.

A lovely tribute to your Grampa. Observed the 2 minutes silence here with thanks to all who risked everything to give me the life I have now

What a great thread!
I, too, would like to send a special salute to both of my grandfathers (both have passed on) and both served in WWII. My dad's dad was in Iwo Jima, and mom's dad never said where he was, but has battle scars to show he was somewhere.
Both of them were born in Mexico, came to this country, FOUGHT for this country and had to fight to not be deported once their tour of duty was over!
Long story short, the government granted them both citizenship, and they both lived full, happy and FREE lives!
GOD BLESS THE USA!!

What a beautiful salute! My grandfather was also in the Navy - he got a purple heart (really wish I knew where it was) for bravery during battle.
My husband is a Navy vet too, was overseas during Desert Storm.
Remember, the freedoms we enjoy today are because of the endeavors of these brave men and women!

To all the vets, and the "still in there" guys and gals.
Thanks alot.. Your work is always appreciated and remembered here.
-
A moment of silence and prayer for all of the vets that have served our country so well.
We take our freedom for granted - yet we owe a debt of gratitude to so many that we are free.
Prayers for all of our soldiers who are away from their families - keep them safe - and after their mission is done allow them to return home.
-

My mom and dad were married Sept. 3, 1917. This picture was taken the next year. My dad, Clay, was Chief Mechanic in the Field Artillery and is on the right in the picture which was taken in "Hocher Germany, 15 Kilos from Coblenz".

Out of curiosity....isn't it a Stat holiday in the States? It is for Canadians and when I checked on my work email, there were some messages from some vendors from the US.
Freckles, what a wonderful picture.
-
Slick, schools are closed, banks are closed and post offices are closed.
I am not sure about other governmental agencies - but the stock market is open.
It is not a national holiday for everyone.................so ENJOY YOUR DAY OFF! :D
-
Not all schools are closed. I'm at work. ;) :p Then again, around here, Law Schools and Universities close rarely. :)
I think the State of MI offices are closed though. Anyone with the day off, enjoy it! :D
